Happy 4th of July, Convicts.

prisonhands-on-bars11On this 4th of July, let’s try to remember those who are unjustly imprisoned, in this land we regard as so free. All for the profit of a few.

So while we enjoy our steaks, and beer, let’s ponder what America really is, and not just the myths we celebrate.

You want to really celebrate freedom on this 4th of July? Leave your identification at home. Smash your smart-phone. Break a surveillance camera. Download an anonymous Internet browser and encryption software. Buy a big hat or sunglasses to defeat facial recognition software. Cover your license plate in dust. Go for a ride in the countryside. Shoot a gun, maybe buy one. The next time you see something suspicious, don’t call the cops, go up to your fellow citizen and ask about it—chances are you’ll get a satisfactory explanation.

That’s real independence. Quiet subservience is not.

How many people in prison shouldn’t be there? Half? It wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

BTW, I just came back from my father’s place in Berkeley. His old Volvo has a license plate where the color on the numbers has totally worn off. The plate’s a solid blue, I congratulated him on that.

While I haven’t got any firm numbers, from just my reading on the subject, I’d say 50% sounds like a totally reasonable number.

I’ll have to check them out, they both look good. Especially Harris’ book, as I recall reading a great article by her a few years ago on court-imposed debt as a way to further oppress the poor.
