Anyone who lived through the 80s probably knows this song by heart. Or, at least they think they do. When you listen to the whole thing, you hear some things that make you really realize why paranoid-about-evangelical-rage TV executives might have encouraged the TV Show Cheers to use a more than slightly altered version.

Can we talk about the line, “And your husband wants to be a girl?” I’m thinking that Sam and Diane never would have approved such a radically liberal song lyric, and Carla would have plotzed! On the other hand, Norm would have just quietly smiled.

But, we’re definitely glad to see a gathering of what I personally feel are most of the most astute blog commentariat of the last decade, gathered together in one place, where everybody know’s your (screen) name.

Microsoft has inadvertently demonstrated the intrinsic security problem of including a universal backdoor in its software after it accidentally leaked its so-called “golden key”—which allows users to unlock any device that’s supposedly protected by Secure Boot, such as phones and tablets.

The key basically allows anyone to bypass the provisions Microsoft has put in place ostensibly to prevent malicious versions of Windows from being installed, on any device running Windows 8.1 and upwards with Secure Boot enabled.

And while this means that enterprising users will be able to install any operating system—Linux, for instance—on their Windows tablet, it also allows bad actors with physical access to a machine to install bootkits and rootkits at deep levels. Worse, according to the security researchers who found the keys, this is a decision Microsoft may be unable to reverse.

The golden keys were found by MY123 and Slipstream in March this year. They’ve just posted, on a rather funky website, a description both of Microsoft’s security errors and of its seeming reluctance to patch the issue. The researchers note that this snafu is a real-world demonstration of the lack of wisdom in the FBI’s recent demands for universal backdoors in Apple’s devices.

        I’m not a doctor! The old joke is that only doctors have enough money to buy those. I have a pair of Dynaco Stereo 70s. People with more money than sense pooh-pooh Stereo 70s, but it really is a great amp once you fix a few shortcomings (which I have done).
        
        The speakers are an interesting hodge-podge, Utah’s from the 60s, along with some more modern, but good mid/tweet drivers. The Tuner/Preamp is more modern, from the late 80s, a modified NAD. Turntable is an AR XA, the most manual turntable in the world. My CD player needs a new laser, not using it ATM (it’s an Emerson, believe it or not, made back when they first came out and overbuilt them). Right now, I use my computer to play CDs, it has a great SoundBlaster 128 card.
        
        I also have a cassette deck, but I have not used it in years. I only had it for convenience, I was never impressed by the format.
        
        Best of all, I have very little money invested in the whole thing.

        A friend used to buy any condition Mac tube amp that came through his door. Most people didn’t know that about once a year Mac would bring any of their old amps back to new specs only charging for tubes if necessary.
        
        When Les Paul guitars fell out of favor,he would buy them for 50-150 bucks. I saw his collection once of over, at that time, 150+.

        I once worked on a friend’s Mac. He got it from a doctor, of course. Had a beautiful chrome chassis. After I fixed it, I waxed the chassis. He was impressed. Macs actually deserve the reputation that they have, they are excellent. They are even building brand new classic Mac tube amps these days, and they get a lot of money for them.
        
        One of my bosses has a Les Paul from the ’70s. Beautiful instrument and he loves it. I am sure your friend has got a collection worth big bucks now, they are back in favor (as are a lot of old instruments).
        
        A lot of old instruments and electronics are in demand and fetch good money. Even the stuff that was kind of cruddy. Slap the word “vintage” in the For Sale ad, and people can’t whip out their wallets fast enough, whether it’s good stuff or not.

        Thanks, many, many, years ago, long before I had heard of Ikea, I designed and built furniture that could be assembled without nails, screws, etc… It was all slotted. Tables, chairs, beds, desks. Anyhow, my girlfriend was in college at the time and I thought how convenient it would be to able to assemble and disassemble furniture that could be easily moved and stored (because it would all just be flat pieces) without the hassle of needing all the gromets and tools needed to put them together.
        
        I was a fine arts major, and I later switched to product design – but that was when I was in my 30’s. I guess I had a knack for it.

        I even do that sometimes to the Korean bus driver. There is one super-polite bus driver in Seoul and everyone loves to be on his bus. I’ve been on it a couple of times. He’s a young, good-looking guy and he has a microphone and he uses the most polite form of Korean (there are 5 levels of honourifics in the language) and greets everyone as they get on and off the bus. It gives me “buzzy head”

Good morning 17. My email finger slipped again

I see you and Ricki are having a nice time at your blog tonight and that
makes me happy. When life hands you lemons you make lemonade. You’re
real little troopers. Good for you. If Ricki posts enough music you
might be able to move the crown contest back a few days, say mid-August
sometime. Wouldn’t that be nice!!

I realize, in my last email I didn’t say who “we” is. It’s everyone who
used to post at TBR, plus about a dozen others we all know from the
past, and they all know about you and your stalking…… and of course 17.
My my, but he has filled me in all about you two. I had no idea.
Between him, Plum’s and all the stories pouring out from guests at the
new place– we know everything. The rest of the gang has corroborated
everything and Cathyx and I have compared stories too. 17 is fucking delighted. On cloud 9. We’ve all hitched our wagons to 17 because we like him– a lot. (None of us ever want to see either of you again.)

Our new home is just hopping. I can barely keep up with all the new
comments flooding in, And the camaraderie is wonderful. Just today I
made some breakfast and when I sat back down there were 300 new comments
posted. (I see you guys finally broke 200 comments after 2 days.
That’s progress.)

You could pop by to have a look, but I think you have been completely
blocked out so you’ll have to rely on your spies to make reports. Rats,
eh!!! Not quite as good as being there yourself, is it?
