14999399414_92c6315329_bToday, China launched Micius, supposedly the world’s first communications satellite to use quantum encryption and billed has “hack-proof.” However, claims about the non-hackability of quantum exncription, like reports of Snowden’s death,  are a bit over-exaggerated.

Nonetheless, this is yet another area of industry where China is ahead of the US, by leaps and bounds

    • RTIII

Weren’t they the ones who had … Oh, no wait, it was Jack In The Box…

Caught with an e-coli outbreak from fecal material found in their food had a new tag line about how they were raising the cooking temperatures in the interests of food safety:

“At Jack-In-The-Box, we cook the shit out of our burgers!”

      • Jack also had the “Kangaroo Burger” incident.

        • RTIII

          Missed that one!

    • MsPythia

      LOL!

    • all_hail_the_hypno_toad

    • I’d love to drive this thing, in a panicked manner, down a not-too-busy, but not empty city street, with people holding prods and rifles, hanging out the sides.

  • RTIII

OK, boys and girls, time for me to retire! 😉

    Catch yall on the morrow!

          • Oh! Guess so:^)

          • SpiffyTheValiant

now everyone thinks spiffy is a pervert ;/

Sigh. Frackery Rotten Clinton will not care.

    • As have been the last 15 months! 🙁

      • We always wait until a problem smacks us in the face, before we react:(

        • kreskin

          It’s already too late .

          • I hope you’re wrong. I’m afraid you might be right.

        • Unfortunately, it’s far too late to do anything. That moment passed about a decade ago. Physics is a harsh master, and we’re gonna burn, badly. Humanity may well survive what’s coming, but it’s going to be a close-run thing. :.(.

Dem tactics , the red scare , false accusations … they are nothing new.

” There are so many levels of irony to the Democrats’ reliance
on this ugly tactic. To begin with, one presidential candidate who
actually has significant, questionable ties to Russia is named . . .
    Hillary Clinton.

As The New York Times detailed in 2015,
Hillary and her husband Bill were at the center of a deal that “gave
the Russians control of one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in
the United States.” Those responsible for engineering that deal gave
millions of dollars to the Clinton Foundation, which “were not publicly
disclosed by the Clintons, despite an agreement Mrs. Clinton had struck
with the Obama White House to publicly identify all donors.” Hillary
herself approved the deal as Secretary of State, while Bill personally
“received $500,000 for a Moscow speech from a Russian investment bank
with links to the Kremlin that was promoting Uranium One stock.”

    https://theintercept.com/2016/08/08/dems-tactic-of-accusing-adversaries-of-kremlin-ties-and-russia-sympathies-has-long-history-in-us/

    • MsPythia

Hillary could do anything and the Shillbots would still defend her. Anything.

      • kreskin

I know . It’s the goober / bagger syndrome , their brains have been rendered useless.

        • MsPythia

They’re stupid, gullible easily lead people. It makes me sick.

          • kreskin

And they lie a lot .

          • MsPythia

Yup. And many are getting paid to do that online.

          • kreskin

Disgusting … to say the least .

  • Everybody have a good night it’s time for bed:^)

    • MsPythia

Good night Stephanie! Sleep Well. 🙂

  • MsPythia

Well kids, I’m off too. Yawning now…

  • Jill Stein and the Green Party add more ballot lines this week

Jill Stein and the Green Party filed their petitions for ballot access in 3 more states this week: Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Utah. The campaign is confirmed on the ballot in 28 states, and awaits state government confirmation in 7 others where we have filed in the last month. 12 more states have pending deadlines where we will be filing between now and September 9.

  • Annaleigh

Katie Halper brought this mind numbingly horrible Wonkette article to everyone’s attention. It’s talking about Juanita Broaddrick. Author says that Bill Clinton could have very well raped Juanita Broaddrick, but it doesn’t make him evil or a bad feminist because he called her on the phone to say he was oh so sorry: http://wonkette.com/605513/lets-talk-about-juanita-broaddrick

    • HITO

I totally get the part where Broaddrick felt intimidated by Hillz at their chance meeting, as civil as it was. Whether Hillz knew about the event (I doubt it) or whether Hillz knew Bill’s type of victim – I could understand why Broaddrick came to the conclusion she was being warned. Interesting read – especially Rebecca’s it’s OK because that’s what people did back then.

    • The_Fixer

Jeebus, what tripe that woman writes.

      • 17

Wonkette used to be a fun place to visit. Now it’s just “a place I used to know”.

        • The_Fixer

I remember reading the occasional story there that was linked from some other place. That was mostly during the Bush era.

I wonder if our mutual disdain for Bush didn’t draw Democrats and true liberals together? He was such a cruddy President and nearly everyone could see that. When push comes to shove, though, there’s a huge difference between a Democrat and a Liberal. Were seeing that play out now.

          • 17

To be honest, I think it’s more along the lines that alot of Dems have finally got to admit, “Hey, both sides actually DO do it”!

NJ Judge Thomas J. Critchley Jr. Gives Pedophile Cops Probation

A Madison New Jersey police officer pled guilty to possessing child pornography and endangering the welfare of a child. This is the second time in five years that a Madison police officer was found guilty of possessing child pornography.

At the conclusion of the trial, Rybka’s attorney painted the sentence as “a real loss to the department because he was a terrific officer and slated for great things.” Perhaps his child victims would disagree.

The DEA Is Literally Using Surveillance to Get Better at Stealing from Travelers

When Louis Weiss, the former supervisor of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), was interviewed by USA Today’s Brad Heath, the former DEA employee had no problem discussing the government agencies’ dependence on stolen property in order to pad their budgets and increase discretionary spending.

Donald Trump campaign opens in Israel

For the first time ever, a US party is running a ground-campaign in Israel, with the Republicans hoping to mobilize the vote for Trump.

General Atomics Lands $370Mln Contract to Build More Reaper Drones

When you hear stories about thousands of innocent Pakistanis killed in US drone strikes, this is the aircraft in question. This is the aircraft people all over the Middle East have grown to fear as invariably, it’s appearance means someone is going to be on the receiving end of it’s missiles and bombs.

    http://www.veteranstoday.com/2016/08/16/general-atomics-lands-370mln-contract-to-build-more-reaper-drones/

    • The_Fixer

That’s the one that has caused the people of Yemen to fear sunny days. An otherwise beautiful sunny day means that the U.S. drones will be flying, and that someone, innocent or guilty (more likely innocent) is going to die.

The U.S. is indeed powerful – so powerful that we’ve redefined a good day for the Yemeni people. A beautiful day in Yemen is one that is overcast and cloudy. What we would call dreary.

      • 17

We can only hope someone comes up with a way to fight these things, because they will be used here at home for the same purpose they are used there.

        • Shohanna

          Sooner rather then later.

      • cathyx

That’s just so sad. I don’t see how these people wouldn’t hate us forever.

@gary4205 I dunno, man, I already went and got a PhD in astrophysics. Seems like more than that would be overkill at this point.

    • cathyx

Sorry, had to copy and paste the top two tweets to her initial tweet, they didn’t come with the link. They are hilarious.

      • 17

Greetings, human. I grock Spock. 😉

        • cathyx

You remind me of some weird guy i used to read the comments of at another site.

          • 17

First, the proper response is to return greetings in kind (it’s in the TOS). Secondly, although I’d hate to do it, I may have to add the word “weird” to the filter. Any further transgressions on your part will result in extreme punishment.

          • cathyx

            Yep, the resemblance is uncanny.

          • 17

That’s defamation of character. Cease and Desist.

          • cathyx

You might think you sound like a lawyer and you might get others to believe that you are one, but most of us know the truth about that.

          • 17

I am not a lawyer. But as a double-naught spy, I often stay at a Holiday Inn Express.

          • The_Fixer

As long as you aren’t “kind of a lawyer.” I hear that they know all.

      • The_Fixer

Hey, it’s readable and that’s what counts. I found it to be about as perfect a way to deal with a troll as I’ve ever seen. LMAO!

US War Crimes or ‘Normalized Deviance’

The U.S. foreign policy establishment and its mainstream media operate with a pervasive set of hypocritical standards that justify war crimes — or what might be called a “normalization of deviance,” writes Nicolas J

Alternet: Why Bother? It has been converted into a propaganda tool of the Clinton Campaign.

    • cathyx

I commented at Mother Jones that is should be called Mother Trump.

      • towerofbabel

How many Trump articles does anyone need to read? There is a paucity of articles about the Crooked Queen.

        • cathyx

I can’t bother to even comment at the places that I’m still not banned at, even those sites are too much. It’s like hearing a song you hate on the radio being over played on every station.

          • 17

            Freebird!

          • cathyx

THAT’S the song you hate so much? I like that one. i’d have to give some thought about what mine is.

          • 17

I didn’t say I hate the song. It’s just an example of the kind of song that burns a hole in your brain when applied like a laser. Stairway to Heaven’s another.

          • cathyx

Well, my comment was about a song you hate being played over and over.

          • 17

Your comment is off topic and is placing undue stress on our fleet of “Roving Moderators”.

Yes. At least Garza was loyal.

          • The_Fixer

Anybody ever figure out if Garza was a real person, or just a hand with a sock over it?

          • 17

            Sock.

It wore on me in a remarkably short time. Then there was the abbreviated short version on poorly maintained jukeboxes that had a copy that the needle had cut through the vinyl.

          • 17

So many back then went through that fate. After the plane crash, “Simple Man” and so many others got cut that way.

          • The_Fixer

Well, now I have to put some music on as it’s starting to play in my head. Make it stop!

          • 17

            Yeah. Thanks alot, Cathy!

          • Shohanna

That reminds me, I had a 45 that I did burn through the vinyl.

          • The_Fixer

Most any classic rock of that era qualifies. I heard all that stuff ad nauseum, whether I wanted to or not 40 years ago and I am sick of it.

Worst part about all of that is that there was actually far better music being made at the time that never saw an audience. Thank the FSM that we have the Internet and it’s so much easier to find decent music these days.

Professor Noam Chomsky Lectures Leftists on Why They Should Vote for Neo-Liberal, Imperial War Hawk Hillary Clinton

In an article worthy of the convoluted and deceptive logic of the New York Times that he is so fond of criticizing, Noam Chomsky, together with John Halle, has published a piece on his website shilling for the election of Hillary Clinton. “An Eight Point Brief for LEV (Lesser Evil Voting)” also comes with a most unusual addendum: “Note: Professor Chomsky requests that he not be contacted with responses to this piece.”

    Gatekeepers gotta keep gates.

If Professor Chomsky thinks this tripe is worth the time of day, he needs to slide quietly into retirement.

    • towerofbabel

      Received a Clinton Foundation Grant?

      • 17

I don’t know. But I know he started his gatekeeper role when he started pushing the “19 hijackers” bullshit. He knows better.

        • Shohanna

He HAS to know better. He is NOT dumb, he can play it all he wants but he is so famous for his smarts….. The cognitive dissonance HURTS. He will be the first one I blame when it goes to hell in a hand basket. Nuremberg would be too good for him.

          • 17

            Nuremberg? Damn, girl. You’re brutal!

          • Shohanna

That’s what happens when you have the world’s trust and ear. Responsible people get the responsibility.

    • I stopped paying attention to Chomsky some time ago. He’s been compromised. Most likely by himself and the waning of his faculties.

    • Shohanna

Or collect his retirement so he can live in relative peace. Just wait til his “propaganda bullshit” comes back to bite him in the ASS. Cause he knows it will. He has to, isn’t “dumb”.

Hacking group offers ‘stolen NSA cyber-weapons’ in bitcoin auction

The Equation Group, a collection of hackers, has previously been accused by the Kaspersky Lab of using techniques and tools very similar to those of the NSA. In 2015 Kaspersky Lab called the group “a threat
actor that surpasses anything known in terms of complexity and sophistication of techniques, and that has been active for almost two decades.”

Mass media shootings: The connection between massacres and TV ratings (VIDEO)

From serial killers to mass shooters, if there’s one thing television audiences love, it’s a sordid story of crime with interchangeable victims that could potentially be any one of us. And yet, despite the loop of trauma that the US seems to be stuck in, it’s hard to understand why mass shootings have tripled in the past 15 years.

That is, until you consider that the wall-to-wall coverage may give unstable individuals the recognition they seek.

    https://www.rt.com/usa/356090-mass-media-shootings-connection/

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4HQQigaZn4

    • There’s a long precedent for believing this might be. Some evidence against it, too, but still. We certainly know that the rise in forearms ownership isn’t responsible, as firearms-caused deaths have dropped, as ownership has increased, though that doesn’t mean the corollary, that the increase in firearm ownership is responsible for the drop in deaths.

      • 17

What I find interesting is how the media “picks and chooses” which shootings are covered and which are not. When there’s already a busy news cycle, they don’t seem to break much for a shooting. But when there’s something they want forgotten, it’s wall-to-wall coverage of the gunman’s childhood. Take the unrest going on the past few days…not covered as much as Fergusen or Baltimore. Is Trump really that much more newsworthy?

        • My evidence is anecdotal, and probably observer bias, but I’ve noticed it too.

While Beijing and Manila talk, Washington spoiling for a fight

The lame duck Obama administration has ruled that a Chinese naval base in the Scarborough shoal is a red line. Make no mistake this red line will be crossed. Before or after November 8. Your move, Queen of War. Wecame, We saw, We sunk?

Good Grief, the U.S. quest for hegemony will come to bite us in the ass, and it will bite hard.

      • 17

Sure will. How thinly do they think we can stretch? One front to the east, one front to the west, and all the while the people at home are just waiting for their chance to strike as well. How can this possibly end well?

        • The_Fixer

Not to mention that our entire manufacturing base has been moved to China. How happy do you think they’ll keep the population when they can’t buy anything because parts or all of our coveted consumer goods are made there?

          Heads up asses.

          • 17

No shit. Someone can’t see past their own noses.

I can’t believe – or, maybe, it’s hard to believe – that these god damned neo-cons (or, call em neo-libs if you want) are so fucking stupid as to itch for war over the whole damned globe.

Sure, we all know the motives – primarily money and the appearance at least of power. But are they really all that STUPID?! Their money isn’t going to be worth much when the rubble has bounced a few times….

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            excellent news.

          • 17

He’s in the dark and asked right away if we’d all lost our minds. I sent him straight to Plum’s for a briefing.

          • The_Fixer

Yeah, he would be in the dark as he was disconnected for a few days. He can’t glean anything from reading that thread on TBR as Ricki and/or Neb erased anything that Edwin said but left their own comments. Reading Plum’s that night sure opened my eyes, good place to send him.

          • 17

Well, that, and I really didn’t want it all hashed out here again. It’s been beaten to death in every thread here since the following day, and plum’s thread is pretty much dedicated to the subject, complete with links he can follow, so…..

          • The_Fixer

True. It gets tiring telling the same story repeatedly.

          • MsPythia

I just read your chatzy link. Can you give me the Plum link?

          • 17
          • MsPythia

            Thank you!

          • MsPythia

Wow. Can I ask a favor? Earlier a list of socks had been put up, but do you have the longer list of the socks (I saw that you had asked on that thread)? I’d just like to know if any of my own stalker’s many, many socks just happen to be on it.

      • Nancy

that was awful…I couldn’t look away either. I have him on my FB feed. I laugh every morning!
for some reason his use of the c-word isn’t even offensive either.

        • Shohanna

No, I noticed that as well. I usually am offended by the use of it. But with him. it’s hilarious! hahah I can’t stop laughing. I got stuck watching all the GoT reviews.

          • Shohanna

*big smile* I am loving over the two I have now. 😀 I need to post pictures!! /nod

    • Really? Did he post in a thread? Good all around, I say!

      • 17

The last thread. He asked if we’d all lost our minds. I sent him to Plum’s for a briefing. He’ll be back.

        • MsPythia

He could have read the streams of abuse, or how we’d been “culled” when in fact it was us who left.

          • Nancy

and are now reinstated? WTH is that about?
            rhetorical…

          • 17

It’s bait. She needs the confrontation, and can’t have it if no one takes it to her, since she can’t bring it to us now. What Nevin’s doing by going over there and taunting her is what she wants.

          • Nancy

yup to the bait…I am not into that. for me the win is walking away.
I feel so much better out of the crazy. my job was like that too and now it’s done. crazy how easy it is to put it on ignore and plod along.
            no more!

          • 17

Ignoring and walking away was the original plan, but when she involved my wife, and then her employer, everything needed to change. I had to shut that shit down.

I sure wasn’t aware of this:

watching this sure brings up some memories and emotions.

  • Shohanna

This made me so angry. More slut shaming. These people are banning Muslim women from public because they don’t show the usual amount of skin! It’s terrible that they aren’t allowed to swim now. **smdh**

    • SpiffyTheValiant

Peel away a layer or two and our society really isn’t that much better when it comes to that. Have you seen how people freak out over mother’s breastfeeding?

      • Shohanna

Yes, yes they are even worse here. I am well aware of it.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

          *hugs the sho*

          • Shohanna

            *hugs the spiffy*

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            🙂

    • MsPythia

      Hi Sho — I agree. It’s horrible — it’s religious discrimination.

      • Shohanna

It is! It’s also sexism. :/

    • Annaleigh

Ironically, I wouldn’t call it slut-shaming, but rather, modesty shaming. One thing that’s messed up about modesty shaming is that it almost exclusively seems directed at Muslim women. If conservative Christian women wanna cover up at the beach, no one bats an eye, or if someone does bat an eye, they don’t say or do anything, and those women aren’t the target of harassment or attempts to ban them from places.

      • Shohanna

Good point, I chose the wrong word but with the right meaning. LOL I meant that they were attempting to try to control what women wear. What ever it is, it’s still telling women they are not appropriate for their comfort. :/

That’s what I meant. But yeah I can see it as modesty shaming. Thanks for that Heads up!

        • Annaleigh

Oh definitely agreed. The fact that both slut-shaming and modesty-shaming are things is proof that women can’t win!

          • Edwin

I think it’s Islamophobia and racism.

          • Annaleigh

Oh I think that’s the main thing.

          • Edwin

It’s like when Switzerland didn’t want any mosques. And Andy K (do you remember him) said it was just a zoning thing and for aesthetic reasons. Except the zoning thing covered every square inch of the country.

          • Annaleigh

Yes, I remember Andy (he’s on my Facebook friends list), though I don’t remember him saying that. I remember some people complaining that they wouldn’t want a mosque nearby because of the call to prayer being loud and me pointing out there’s a Catholic church in my town near a lot of homes which has a loud bell that rings every hour….of course whoever said that either had no answer to that, or the church was somehow different (I forget which).

          • Edwin

Andy and I certainly used to get into it. He said it was a zoning issue, nothing more. And as he had been hiking in Switzerland he too thought those ugly mosques would spoil a pretty view. I asked if there weren’t a tiny corner of Switzerland where they might squeeze in a mosque, he said, Nope. (I don’t recall what he said, to be honest, but we went back and forth for hours.)

No fear mongering here. Disregard those minarets look like missiles and for some reason they included a veiled women for a “zoning” permit issue.

          • Edwin

When I am in countries where the call to prayer plays, I love it.

    • Shohanna

Those pictures give me the fucking creeps. It took me months to figure out the Obush one that Ronbo snagged as his avatar. It makes me shiver and want to run away. This one is no different. *shiver* EEWW

  • SpiffyTheValiant

Just got this email. Apparently this guy is running for State Treasurer of PA.

Guess who is getting an unsubscribe?

only one candidate running for President understands that the
Constitution begins with “We, the People” not “Some of the people.”

Hillary Clinton is tireless, determined, and ready to fight for all of us.

Like Joe, she knows that when government is done right, it can be a
tool to lift each other up, so that we all can have an opportunity for
    the American Dream.

That’s why Joe Torsella is proud to stand with Hillary Clinton.

We are all truly stronger together. And together, we can elect Hillary Clinton and Democrats up and down the ticket.

    Thanks!

    – Team Torsella

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      So I said this.

I have voted straight blue since I could vote. But I will never support Hillary Clinton. I will vote blue down the ballot, but any campaign that says something like this following, “Hillary Clinton is tireless, determined, and ready to fight for all of us.” is not a campaign that I will support by choice. Fortunately, as of now the Democrats mostly have only Republicans as the alternative. That makes them the default vote by choice most of the time. I’m voting for Jill Stein in 2016. The Democratic Party has lost a reliable voter. If I see a green party candidate for any down ticket races, I’m check that box for them. Any party that would choose a woman with a 11% trustworthy rating, isn’t worthy of my support.

      • MsPythia

        Nice! Good Morning Spiffy! <3

Good morning, Stephanie. The pump’s been running non-stop since you alerted me last night, and my back 40 is a lake. Rained all morning here again, but nothing we can’t handle so far. Saw the storm moving your way last night. Did ya stay dry?

      • Good morning 17:) Yeah I did.

Glad to hear your pump can stay on top of things. Other than a huge puddle where my driveway levels out, my yard seems to be handling the water fine. We were getting pretty dry here.

    • Shohanna

      Good Morning Stephanie!

    • MsPythia

      Good Morning Stephanie! 😀

  • But, notice how even the very progressive Mint Press rests their assumptions about these debates on the myth that the “Commission On Presidential Debates” is an independent organization and not just an arm of the Republican and Democratic parties. Even scarier is that I think something like 98% of people in a poll I saw thought that too…

It’s why I tend to be dismissive of people’s political opinions (excepting folks here, of course). It[‘s because the vast majority of people are utterly ignorant about the most basic aspects of out political system.

Commission On Presidential Debates Shuts Out 2016 Third Party Candidates

There is clearly an unprecedented desire for alternatives to the Republican and Democratic nominees, and voters deserve an opportunity to see and hear that there are, in fact, other credible, serious choices.”

    • SpiffyTheValiant

Half of voters didn’t even know midterms were happening in 2014. Doesn’t shock me at all.

    • Very important topic. That the American people need to understand better.

“…the vast majority of people are utterly ignorant about the most basic aspects of out political system.”

If the rules didn’t change daily, and if the system actually wanted people to know how it works, it wouldn’t be that way.

“…voters deserve an opportunity to see and hear that there are, in fact, other credible, serious choices.”

If the media weren’t basically branches of the Dem and Rep political parties, that might be possible.

      • If the rules didn’t change daily, and if the system actually wanted people to know how it works, it wouldn’t be that way.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I’m always trying to spread knowledge, and I don’t mean “think like this!” knowledge, but “this is how years of education and decades of experience have taught me how it works” knowledge and people react with great anger, resentment and even violence at having their a-priori, ignorant ideas challenged with fact.

    • towerofbabel

You are absolutely right with the caveat that the political system has evolve over time into something much more corrupt. That’s part of the reason people don’t see it–like slow boiling that old frog.

  • Whelp, managed to haul out a New Open thread, for today (finally!)
