For centuries, Ethiopia’s Lower Omo Valley has been a crossroads for many distinct tribes. During times of drought, natural resources become scarce, escalating clashes between groups. In an ever-changing landscape, young men and women come of age in an unfamiliar time.

The story is narrated from two unique perspectives. Uri- a young boy from the Hamar tribe who becomes a man during his rite of passage ceremony, and Segelgwo- an elder chief of the Daasanach, who reflects on his community’s uncertain future.

Your Weekend of Weekends.

UnkaWillbur - May 26, 2017

Here' some links to nosh on, to start of your weekend. I hope everyone's weekend is great; me, myself, I'm planning on jumping out of a perfectly…

  • 17

    First (for a change).

  • 17

    Second, also too!

  • SpiffyTheValiant

    hi 🙂

  • OK, thread’s up. Now to see which of you wascalwy wabbits warranted someone flagging a comment. I wish Disqus would show me who flagged a comment, as whose comment was flagged.

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      Could have been an accident.

    • cathyx

      Whose comment was flagged?

      • 17

I saw one of Edwin’s flagged here once.

        • cathyx

Anyone with a disqus account can flag any comment here if they are not banned from here. So we can all get flagged ad nauseum if someone wanted to do that.

    • @SpiffyTheValiant:disqus, @cathyx:disqus : There were 4, all related to comments about a person lonely-posting at another Disqus community. They were flags of desperation. I did find a way to deal with abusive flagging, but it hasn’t come to that yet, just the occasional flags-of-butthurtedness..

BTW: I have yet to get a comment flagged, on here, that wasn’t related to that sad tumblr or to the site full of criminals and prevaricators.

      • cathyx

Then i don’t think those flags are important, we know what’s behind them. But do commenters suffer anything from disqus if they get lots of flags?

        • Not as far as I know, except maybe a hit on their reputation. But up-voted comments can far outweigh that.

I know, if a mod marks them as spam enough it can get them booted.

          • cathyx

Then i wouldn’t worry about those, or can’t we can’t trust Spiffy or 17? I’m not sure I do. (he he)

          • I’m pretty sure Spiff is marking everything by Smot as spam, but otherwise they’re trustworthy.

            (I’m kidding about that, Smot!)

          • cathyx

Poor Smot, he’s been though enough already. Spiffy needs to leave him alone.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

😛 He loves my linda carter meme!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

:O What are you trying to say?

          • 17

            I don’t trust 17 either.

          • Well, I’m pretty sure Spiff is marking everything by Smot as spam, but otherwise they’re trustworthy.

            (I’m kidding about that, Smot!)

        • For example, here’s what Disqus has to say about me, in the moderation panel. You’ll note that i’ve been flagged quite a few times, but still have a high rep, because people have been kind about up-voting my commentary.

        • For example, here’s what Disqus has to say about me, in the moderation panel. You’ll note that i’ve been flagged quite a few times, but still have a high rep, because people have been kind about up-voting my commentary. (edited because I left my IP in there. DUH!)

          • Shohanna

Makes me curious about my own stats. LOL

        • RTIII

          No.

      • The_Fixer

The only time I flag anyone is when it’s spam or extremely abusive, threatening or so over the top that it needs to go away. My criteria for flagging is at a pretty high bar, though. I am more of a free speech kind of guy when it comes to that. Apparently, some folks get all hot and bothered about any little thing.

I have been known to accidentally downvote someone, but usually catch it right away. It happens most often on a new comment shifted to the right. When the little blue bar to the left of the avatar disappears, the whole comment shifts to the left, and if you’re trying to upvote at that moment, it will turn onto a downvote.

Flagging someone is very, very tough to do accidentally, though. You have to confirm the flagging in a pop-up dialogue box. I doubt it’s accidental. Like you say, somebody’s butt-hurt.

        • You were one of the Flag-ees! LOL. So now you know exactly what the source of the hurted butt was.

          • The_Fixer

Really? On the one I put up this morning?

          • From yesterday’s thread, something about “over posting” They were all flagged this morning, like half an hour ago. ROFL.

          • The_Fixer

Yeah, I put that up this morning. Interesting. Well, we know that we have an audience.

I do hope that my advice about being careful gets taken. I don’t trust some people and based upon what I’ve learned about them, I think that’s prudent.

          • cathyx

And flagging the commenters here is so petty and immature. ( i will assume this comment will get flagged too)

          • The_Fixer

I doubt that, unless she whoever this person is just simply wants to make work for Unka. Which would be stupid as it could be done right back.

          • 2 clicks, “select all” and “approve” no work at all! 🙂

          • 17

            Flagged!

          • cathyx

            Flagged!

          • 17

Thank you! I’m clearly under-flagged and under-downvoted here. We need to change this.

          • cathyx

            No problem.

          • RTIII

            Got ‘cha covered buddy!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

I keep telling you people we are being watched.

          • Shohanna

Hey come come I can’t upvote his comment?! O.o Never seen that before. It even had a circle with a line through it.

          • I was just suffering from that. Weird. I think it might have been a Disqus bug.

          • Shohanna

I couldn’t upvote ANY comment there, and it was just yesterday we made that thread. Do I have some kind of flag on me stopping my upvotes?! WTF..

          • I dunno. Like I said, it’s likely a Disqus bug and the fact that it’s occurring while we’re talking about flagging is just coincidence. Probably.

          • Shohanna

            hahaha He says…

Naw dude, someone blocked the page from being edited.

          • Can’t be that, I can add and vote on the page. and the thread isn’t listed as “Closed.”

          • Shohanna

Well, we are talking about this, I reopened the thread and I can upvote now. O.O curious, and curiouser. LOL

          • How could you re-open the thread? You’re not a mod!

          • Shohanna

I clicked the link back to Fixer’s comment. O.o You gave me the link. I reopened the link in another tab. 😀

          • Ah, OK. Because a thread can be “opened” or “closed” to comments. as an example go to yesterday’s thread, you’ll see I’ve “closed” it to comments.

          • Shohanna

Ah, well I had opened your link in 1 tab and that one, would not let me upvote and had that circle with a line through it on every single comment. We talked, and I opened another tab with the same link, and that one I could upvote. Strange, almost like someone was editing the page and To keep it safe it wouldn’t allow changes.

          • No, it was just a buggy script on one page load, then, when you reloaded it in another tab, the bug was fixed/deactivated/whatever.

Every web page is, in a sense, its own little application, and each time you load or reload a page the app runs again, with any changes made to it on the web-server, in between loads.

          • Shohanna

Oddly specific bug if you ask me. O.o

          • Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. 😉

        • cathyx

Yes, that’s true about needing to confirm the flag. No way is it done accidentally.

        • And, yeah, down-voting can be accidental, flagging, never.

          • RTIII

            Morning.

I don’t agree: I have flagged in error!

Sure, the clicking of the flag may not be accidental but WHO, WHAT COMMENT you flag can sometimes be. I can recall reading a thread, coming back through and deciding the original poster needed to be flagged but instead, I ended up flagging someone who had merely quoted the original poster… Oops!

          • AHA! But, the flagging wasn’t unintentional you just flagged the wrong person! 😀

          • RTIII

Uh, I thought I said exactly that!

          • But that’s not an accidental flagging, it’s a deliberate flagging, just a mistake in which comment you flagged!

          • RTIII

I say you are semantically mistaken!

        • Shohanna

I haven’t flagged a comment since we were at C&L and Gunthur was flooding the damned threads. That’s how “often” I flag posts. It’s gotta be bad and they had to of pissed me off personally.

      • SpiffyTheValiant

        ah i see.

      • MsPythia

Mornin’ Unka! Sounds like we got a Roving Garza flagging us!

      • Shohanna

There are people flagging posts?! O.o Wow, that’s hardup desperate for attention if you ask me. Butt sore losers.

  • Downvotes

Folks, While Disqus may have made the (wrong, imho) decision to hide down-vote numbers, you can still see them with this Chrome extension or this Firefox plugin.

    • The_Fixer

I just added it, even though I use Vivaldi and not Chrome. Vivaldi has the same rendering engine as Chrome, I will see if it works in it.

      • The_Fixer

And yes, the Chrome extension to expose Disqus downvotes does indeed work on Vivaldi.

        • I figured it would, the downvote count is just a custom attribute on the down-vote HTML element. (IIRC)

          • The_Fixer

Me, too. but ya never know about some of this stuff. Bering as Vivaldi is a rather young browser, there’s always the chance for bugs to pop up.

By the way, I like Vivaldi. Reminds me of what Opera on Linux used to be – only a better when it comes to rendering pages.

          • I’m a die-hard Firefox user. As a web-developer, it provides me with the power to work as in a traditional dev environment, primarily because of “FireBug”

          • The_Fixer

I also use Firefox, but only for some things, like when I need to view a flash video (Vivaldi don’t do Flash in my situation). Or for mail, because Yahoo! complained about Opera. I got in the habit of using it for that.

Firefox gets painfully slow for me when there are long comment threads. As much as I’d like to have a fiercely fast computer, I don’t. That and I am using an older version of 64-bit Mint, and it has always been slower, even with 4 gigs of memory (which should be enough to run decently). My main computer recently died (it was a dual-core AMD) and I replaced it with a single-core E-machines that I had garbage-picked. Believe it or not, the E-machines is faster. Especially with a 32-bit distro on it (I had an older Ubuntu 32-bit on it and it ran really well). My work computer has Mint 17.3 on it, dual-core and 8 gigs or RAM (it’s an older HP business-class workstation). It flies along pretty well, I have not been able to bog it down while running a decent amount of stuff.

Anyway, for me, Firefox works great for some things, not for others. But I see why you use it exclusively. And I have to say one thing about Firefox – if a page can’t be viewed with Firefox, that page is definitely written wrong.

          • Shohanna

I would brag about mine, but see I play graphic intensive games like World of Warcraft and Diablo 3. It’s a monster. I will say I have 32 gb of Ram. 😀 **whistles**

          • The_Fixer

Whew! 32 GB? You must be rich! I have a Nigerian friend who’s a prince…

          • Shohanna

Haha, I saved for a year and a half to get my puter. It’s my only vice. lol

    • cathyx

I have this. The only drawback is it doesn’t show who the downvoters are.

      • It doesn’t. That’s because Disqus would have gotten that information dynamically, from its servers, like they do with the upvote pop-up.

        • cathyx

So? Oh, nevermind. It’s because chrome is offering it, not disqus.

          • So Disqus removed the code for the down-votes pop-up, even though the count is still there, hence: No popup showing you who down-voted.

          • Left of Eden

Used to be able to see it. It was a good feature; I’m sorry they got rid of it. When I down vote a comment, I want people to see it, and I also want to see who is down voting me.

          • cathyx

The number of downvotes would go down drastically if they showed who gave them.

          • Left of Eden

It has the opposite effect on me. I down vote less often, because I figure “What’s the point,” the person I’m down voting won’t be able to see it anyway.

    • Left of Eden

Still can’t see the down vote numbers after installing and restarting Chrome.

      • Well, something’s got to be down-voted. We dont’ get a lot of that here. So, now, re-load the page and look at your comment! 😉 😛

        • Left of Eden

Ah, that’s the ticket. And I’ll repay you in kind for that down vote!

    • I don’t downvote people. I just simply post to them why their idea is crap.

    • Shohanna

I was thinking about installing the firefox plugin but I am so sensitive that I would rather not know if my comments are not popular or not. I can tell by upvotes. I get ignored a lot. LOL

      • 17

        Pity vote.

        • Shohanna

          Really?! /sigh FU 17.. /nod /runs away.

          • 17

“FU 17”. There’s somethin’ we don’t hear enough of these days, huh?

          • Shohanna

Well, you asked for it. hahahaha

  • Left of Eden

Am re-posting this here from the previous thread because I find the possibility intriguing and haven’t seen much of a discussion of it elsewhere.

Hillary gave a speech in Reno, Nevada. There are allegations that the video doctored to prevent viewers from seeing that Clinton was speaking before a largely empty room. Portable recording devices seen in the audience seem to confirm the suspicion.

    https://memoryholeblog.com/2016/08/26/video-manipulation-suggested-in-hillarys-nevada-speech/

There is speculation that Image Metrics was used to make it seem that either the crowd was much smaller than it was in actuality or that Hillary was never there to begin with on account of her failing health. The second video provides a pretty good analysis of the event.

    • I’ve actually seen quite a few (less than a dozen, but more than 6) pictures of Clinton speeches where the press and publicity photos are arranged to hid the pitifully small number of attendees to the speech.

      • RTIII

Here’s a narrative by a person who attended a Clinton Rally on May 25, not far from me. She says she’s a progressive who just wanted to see what Hillary was all about.

        http://my-day-at-a-hillary-clinton-rally.weebly.com/

It’s a long read that basically concludes what you say: pretty much nobody attended. Most of the people were protesters outside, maybe 50 fans or less in the line, the venue was a high school basketball court with no bleachers and they couldn’t even fill it.

She concludes by saying she was an unwitting prop for cameras showing a line that never moved into the tiny facility and she’s pissed off about it.

        • Very, very interesting. And not at all surprising, either the lack of ability to fill a small gymnasium, nor the greasy use of people for the sake of appearance.

          • Shohanna

I want to know who all these people are that supports Hillary, I have yet to meet a person in REAL LIFE that supports her. Seriously. WHO are these people?

          • SpiffyTheValiant
          • Shohanna

            Good answer! /nod

          • SpiffyTheValiant
          • Shohanna

Such an adorable kitty with a shit eating grin. /nod Matches you perfectly. hahaha

          • SpiffyTheValiant

Lol it’s too mellow to be me really XD (I come off as much more hyper and perky online than in real life i think.)(

          • Shohanna

Depends.. mornings you are perky. Afternoons your chill and evenings you are crazy. /nod that’s my story I am stickin to it. lol

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            lol i see.

          • 17

Are you suggesting GuntherZ, Bootsie, and Tracey Marie aren’t real? Say it ain’t so!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

They are committed. Have to give them that.

            https://i.imgflip.com/m52qs.jpg

          • Shohanna

hahahha YES, YES I am!! /nod

        • cathyx

This reminds me of the time Nebdem went to see Hillary in Omaha. There were reports she couldn’t fill a school gymnasium. He came back and said that it wasn’t true, that he couldn’t get in because it was full. But then we learned that Neb supports Hillary, so now I doubt his story.

          • RTIII

No, Neb was probably not lying, rather, he was fooled. His “couldn’t get in, it was full” was the same bullshit they tried to get the woman in my link to believe, too. The line never moved! It has the APPEARANCE of already being full because they never let the line go through security…. See how that works? EVERYONE believes that the place was already packed!

Read the comments from the link I gave, she tells the story in about 300,000 words, complete with photos to back it up.

    • MsPythia

Very interesting. The image in the iphone definitely doesn’t match…

      • SpiffyTheValiant

        <3 ms

        • MsPythia

          Good morning Spiffy!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            ^^ morning.

        • MsPythia

          Should I flag you? <3

          • RTIII

Definetly! We all deserve a good flagging! Me especially! 🙂

          • MsPythia

😀 Good morning RT — Flagged! (not really)

          • RTIII

            Morning!

…You could flag me all day and it wouldn’t matter; I know the mods! 😛

          • MsPythia

            LOL!

          • RTIII

            [[[hugz]]]

            Hope you’ve got a great day planned…

I’ve been working on a 1963 engine and it’s close to ready. I’m working on the photos for its web page right now. Here’s the web page so far (about a week behind actual progress):

            http://356coachworks.com/share/engines/Jim_Woo_SC.html

          • MsPythia

(((Hugs back))) Very impressive page RT!

I’m feeling kind of under the weather today — almost feels like I’m getting the flu! Kind of nauseous and dizzy with a slight headache. Weird since I’m rarely ill…

          • Sorry you’re not feeling well MsPy… hope you feel better soon.

          • MsPythia

            Thanks Stephanie, me too!

          • RTIII

Awe! Well, take things easy as you can, eat well – careful choices, though. . . I find when I’m nauseous if I eat the right food I’ll feel better.

          • MsPythia

Can’t even think of eating at the moment, but maybe in a bit…

          • cathyx

            My pleasure RT.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            <3 lmao

    • MsPythia

If this goes viral, I wonder whether cable news will talk about it, or just ignore it like they’ve ignored so much else — like the rigging of the primary for example.

      • cathyx

Lol, cable news talking about this?

        • MsPythia

Well, the videos do seem to show that they’re faking events for her — and plays right into the idea that she’s sick, and also that she really has no support. But yeah, I expect most of the stations will ignore it since they’re acting as an arm of her campaign.

        • towerofbabel

No one will dare ay the empress has no cloths.

  • SmotPoker

My puppykat chilling in his favorite hang out…between my legs.

    • Hi Smotty :^) I’m assuming that’s a phone pic. How do you post photos from your phone?

      • SmotPoker

It’s a pic from my iPad, but I just open up my web browser on the iPad, and post. I attach the pics just as you would on a PC except I’m using my iPad as the source of the pics rather than my PC. That make sense?

    • towerofbabel

      Purdy.

    • Shohanna

Awww My kitty was all up in my lap last night after my nightmare. It made me kinda sad, and kinda happy too b/c they hadn’t done something like this before. I was like, OMG they love me and OMG THEY LOVE ME. I teared up over it. I am such a sap.

  • We need a Music Thread, for the weekend! 😉 😛

  • SmotPoker

When in Atlanta for training we stayed in hospital housing. Saw these poor dears wandering around. I gave them half a Firehouse BBQ brisket sub which they wolfed down in no time. Originally thought it was just one kitty when I put the food out. Found out it was a family of four. Anyway, after the kids, and I’m assuming their daddy got their fresh water, and food, momma cat came out, sniffed my exact path, then sat down, and looked right at me even though I was back in the apartment, and out of sight.

    • MsPythia

      Cute! 😀 Good Morning Smot!

      • SmotPoker

Morning MsPythia, yeah I need to remind myself from time to time I’m not a cold hearted bastard. Animals are a real soft spot for me. I’ve always loved them. I feel such pity for the poor defenseless creatures left to fend for themselves. The good news is that there were about 6 bowls to choose from down there by that shed so evidently someone has been taking care of them to a point. I was first drawn to their existence when I saw whom I assume to be a property manager there taking water out to them the first day I arrived.

I thought it was just one kitten until I put out that delicious warmed up Firehouse BBQ brisket sub then they came a running out of the bushes to attack their feast. Another family had just arrived in the housing in a unit downstairs, and a woman saw me feed them, and she went to the store to get some food for them as well since it was my last day there. She talked about calling animal control, and I think I talked her out of it. No telling what their fate will be once animal control has their grubby hands on them, at least this way they stand a fighting chance. Cats are born killers, and can survive quite nicely without human intervention.

The momma(?) cat sniffing me out was kind of freaky though. It’s like she was thanking me for feeding her babies, and wondering if I might have just a tad more for her. I wish that I had, but alas the babies got it all.

        • MsPythia

You’re a good Smotty and we all know it! I do hope someone will adopt them though. While feral cats kill lots of rodents, they also kill a lot of song birds too.

          • SmotPoker

Good luck getting one to come to you. Even after I fed them they had a healthy distrust of humans, and wouldn’t come near me even with my expert cat meows. Nope. Nothing doing pal….

          • MsPythia

Maybe if the lady downstairs keeps feeding them, they’ll come to her eventually. Hope so.

          • SmotPoker

I would say that is highly improbable as this is temporary housing for patients family. It has a hard limit of 30 days that they allow you to stay. It’s a great free service, especially when you consider what 30 days in an Atlanta hotel would cost you, and the length of time these patients are at the Shepherd Center for their rehab. It’s truly a world class organization, and I can totally see why it was the Shepherd Center that Christopher Reeves went to after becoming paralyzed from falling off a horse. If it’s good enough for Superman, it’s good enough for my kid brother. Keeping all that in mind, it’s doubtful any family will be there long enough to bond with the cats. I like to think of them as Shepherd Center therapy cats.

          • MsPythia

Ah — I didn’t realize that’s temporary housing. Poor kitties!

          • SmotPoker

In a weird way I think it’s a good thing to have them around the housing. The guests are dealing with some very serious family health issues, and no doubt feeling a lot of empathy, and compassion for others, and looking for an extra outlet to give flight to those feelings.

As I said earlier there were about 6 bowls or so out there by that shed, so no doubt I’m not the first to take pity on the poor dears. How could you not feel for them especially when your empathy pathways are already opened due to the health issue your family member is dealing with?

          • SpiffyTheValiant

So the kitties have no fear of the people then?

          • SmotPoker

Oh no, they have a healthy suspicion of people, won’t come near us. I tried.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            awe

          • SmotPoker

Like fucking teenagers, they’ll take your food, and whatever you might want to give them, but they don’t want fuck all to do with you….lol

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            lmao i guess so XD

No idea why it posted pics upside down, but now he’s in my lap being a PITA….

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      Lol he wants adopted.

      • SmotPoker

He’s been my big man since the day I adopted him as a kitten. I rescued him from a cage in a store, and he’s been as loyal as any dog ever since. 16 years now, and still going strong. Can’t jump quite like he used to, and his hips are getting a bit used up, but otherwise he’s healthy as a horse.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

oh i thought he was one of the cats at where you were staying.

          • SmotPoker

Sadly no, but hell I got 2 cats, and a dog as it is, I can’t really have anymore pets much to the protests of my daughter whom is never here to take care of them, but wants every fucking cat she sees….

    • Hello Sho :^) feeling better today?

      • SpiffyTheValiant

        wb

      • Shohanna

Hey Stephanie, yes I am feeling better. Was woke up by them power washing outside my window. Damn it, I had another hour and a half to sleep before my dr’s appt.!!!!

        • Glad you’re feeling better sorry that your sleep was cut short. I’m usually woken up early by my phone ringing. I know how frustrating that can be:/

          • SmotPoker

Actually 7 hours is a long stretch of sleep for me. I usually get no more than about 5 on a good night. Thanks though, it did feel rather refreshing to wake up, and have the migraine gone.

          • The post was to Sho, but the same applies to you as well :^) I usually get 6-7 which serves me well. I don’t function very well at 5.

          • Shohanna

If I don’t sleep 8 hrs, something is up and I usually feel like shit that day. (Which is frequent.) It makes me sad when I don’t get my full sleep.

          • SmotPoker

Too many years of waking up at 4am to either serve my country, get in my rig (back in the day), or off to work. I’ve never been one to sleep a lot.

          • Shohanna

I just sleep the normal amount. Which is about 7.5 to 8hrs. I use to pull shifts like yours, back when I worked, took care of twins, and went to school. Sleep deprivation is not fun. I hated it. 4 hours a night was the best I could manage for about 5 yrs or so. **shiver** never again. Now, I get it from stupid insomnia! So when I get over 7 I am a happy camper.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            cat naps

          • Shohanna

Oddly appropriate! I use to take them when I only got 4 hours a night. My heart won’t let me now. I would have a cardiac episode if I pushed it too much now. So I have to have at least 5 to 6hrs to function properly without causing any kind of palpitations or other cardiac events. It drives me up a wall.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            *pat pat the kitty*

          • Shohanna

            **purrs** **curls into a ball**

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            🙂

          • Shohanna

That’s my normal schedule. Up at 4am and bed about 8 to 9. I have so much fucking energy when I do that. But I hate going to bed so early. But any time I do end up on this schedule, I get so much accomplished and done. I feel so much better.

Problem is, I get insomnia too. At least once or twice a month. When it happens I want to bite nails. It takes me 2 fucking weeks to work my schedule around back to normal. JUST in time for it to happen again. I can’t win at all with it. The insomnia is strong too. I force myself to take naps when it happens b/c of my heart. It will start doing funky shit if I am up too long. But I can’t stop it. Damned hormones.

          • Shohanna

I put my phone on do not disturb when I have an alarm set. Screw anyone who tries to call me while I am sleeping. Last thing I want is them waking me up half hour before the alarm goes off. They can fucking WAIT.

LOL Then again I do have “emergency” mode set. If they call 3 times in a row it will ring.

        • SmotPoker

Oh yeah, I made the right call last night in taking the migraine medication. I took it, signed off for the night, and within about half hour or so all was well in my world, and I slept a full 7 hours which is highly unusual for me.

          • Shohanna

Glad you caught it. Mine is in “building” stage and not a damned thing I can do about it. Definite weather change. **smdh**

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      hey, sho

      • Shohanna

Hello there spiffykitty! Yes I am good. Ty.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

          🙂 that’s good.

    • MsPythia

Good Morning Sho! Thanks for this. I think this is what the update I had a few days ago must have been about…

      • Shohanna

No no, there is a new one check now. They issued it Thursday Morning.

  • As Trump and Clinton Exchange Barbs, Stein Listens to Struggling Public Housing Tenants, Homeless and Vets in Baltimore

“Baltimore is ground zero for the fight against poverty,” said Stein. “It’s an inspiration to see the activists on the ground who are refusing to sit idly by while public housing is privatized and federal dollars are siphoned off into a corrupt local housing authority. And they will not accept political disenfranchisement any longer. We are so honored to be working with local hero Annie Chambers, a legend in her own time, who still leads the fight for justice in public housing. The Douglas public housing project lives up to the legacy of its namesake, Fredrick Douglass. It is organizing to end poverty and secure housing justice for their neighborhood and for all Americans.”

    • SpiffyTheValiant

🙂 And that is why she deserves to be president.

Why There’s a Media Blackout on the Native American Oil Pipeline Blockade

As the Lakota Sioux continue their peaceful blockade of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline, the story’s absence from the national media narrative is palpable. Considering the corporate media’s chronic quest for controversial stories on government versus public standoffs, you’d think this situation would garner the typical media frenzy invoked during a right-wing militia occupation of a federal building, for example, or a tense standoff between the Black Lives Matter movement and police. But it’s not.

    http://theantimedia.org/native-american-pipeline-media-blackout/

    • They want to hide the opposition too corporate control. Since they themselves are under the same control by corporations.

  • Interesting, now, no matter the browser I’m using, I get a little “stop sign” icon whenever I hover over the vote-up/vote-down arrow, on posts here.

I can still post and moderate, and still up and down vote through Disqus admin/notification pages, though. Strange.

    • SmotPoker

I get nothing like that, but I’m not a mod so no special powers or anything.

      • Hmm. I think uBlock somehow, across browsers, decided to block the element. Why I couldn’t say (it’s not easy to manually block an element, so not accidentally). Turned off uBlock and it works fine.

        • SmotPoker

I’m not seeing any of the down votes after installing an app for it, and restarting Chrome either. I’ve flagged a couple just for shits, to see if it worked, and it hasn’t yet.

          • You need to reload the page, after down-voting, I think. And I wouldn’t vouch for any of the plugins, since they’re exposing a hidden feature of Disqus’ html.

          • cathyx

You won’t see your own downvotes, it only shows a red down arrow for your own. But you should see others downvotes

Edit to add: I just downvoted you so you can see it.

          • SmotPoker

OK, I see it now. I was looking for red perhaps, who knows? So, you can’t see other downvotes either, just the ones given to you?

          • cathyx

I can see all the downvotes given except the ones I give other people. I can even see the ones people gave me.

  • MsPythia
    • OK, weird. It let me upvote your new post.

      • MsPythia

        What happened?

        • Some of us (Sho, myself) have been getting a weird disqus bug where we couldn’t up/down vote, but only in these “on site” “iframes,” it worked fine when doing so from the “notifications” pop-up (on the right of the browser) or when viewing the thread on Disqus. Just a weird bug but, because we’ve been talking about flagging, freaked us out a bit.

          • MsPythia

Ah — no clue on why?

          • MsPythia

Disqus seems to have glitches all the time.

          • Nope, not a clue.

    • SpiffyTheValiant

I feel like that the blowups probably weren’t as big a deal as it’s being portrayed as. The media is just intent on wagging their finger at Bernie like, “That’s what you get for trying to make a difference. You are going to learn the hard way that you must bow before the Queen.”

      • I feel like it’s actually worse than that though.

I believe the media is trying to purposely undermine Our Revolution because it will make a difference concerning Progressive influence in Congress and other elected positions.

Edit: as well as policy initiatives.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

Yeah that’s what I was trying to say.

          • Sorry, sometimes I can be thick:/

          • SpiffyTheValiant

<3 Nah. Clearly, I didn't phrase it in an understandable way.

          • Nope, this ones on me :^) <3

The House of Rothschild @.@ Scary…

          • SmotPoker

Welp, we both done fucked up, and made the list by daring to mention the name. Fuck.

          • Shohanna

Bah, they are just rot. It’s right there in the name.

          • Shohanna

Isn’t that the damned truth. They want to rule the World and be damned anyone who gets in their way.

      • MsPythia

I think it’s a pretty big deal that that many people left right before the launch. Eight left out of fifteen, and the rest are supporting the idea that Weaver shouldn’t be in charge, and that they don’t like the idea of it being a 501(c)4.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

It’s a new organization. I think that such fights over what it will be are probably normal. The media is just so giddy about it though. That it makes me think they wanted to will them to fail.

          • MsPythia

The people who left and those that are remaining don’t even agree with the 501(c)4 status and the leadership Spiffy. That is not a good sign. It means they don’t agree on the direction that Weaver is taking the organization from the very start.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

Well I suppose those people could just flip weaver off and go form another organization that isn’t that status. I just don’t like how giddy the media is over this. sickens me really.

          • MsPythia

Yeah. Most of the press didn’t give Bernie’s campaign the time of day to begin with.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            yup

          • RTIII

The key is the email list, Spiffy… Nobody else can do this the same way because they don’t have the information.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            ah

    • RTIII

I haven’t liked the opacity. I didn’t know about the 501(c)4 status, for example – yeah, that’s a problem! And Weaver… I agree, he’s too old-school, doesn’t know what the young people want. However successful Bernie’s campaign was, it was in spite of Weaver, not because of him. … Many, like me, don’t even HAVE working TVs – and don’t want them, either!

Also, the timing of their kickoff was just weird.

If it’s NOT about building organizations at the local level, it’s NOT going to succeed.

      • MsPythia

I think it’s weird how they’re saying that Bernie doesn’t seem to know what’s going on with the organization. Isn’t that weird that he’s saying things like “as I understand it we will be…” I thought it was his organization, but maybe it’s not?

        • RTIII

My understanding is that he launched it but plans to focus on his job in the Senate. This is why the choice of leadership is so important. And Weaver is just the wrong guy.

          • MsPythia

Totally agree with you RT. On both of your replies.

          • RTIII

            Thanks.

          • RTIII

I saved my “right way” in an email draft and if I ever get around to it, I’ll email it to Bernie and whoever I can find in surviving leadership, – oh, and JANE! … As a 501(c)4, they must have publicly available leadership, so I’ll contact that leadership directly – the board of directors – with the same document. . . It’s probably a good half day to day’s work, but I think it’s important. . .

As an aside, NOBODY has stepped up to help me get CA for Jill off the ground. 🙁 I think maybe people are all bernt out and discouraged and are willing to vote Jill but aren’t willing to help her with $$. But that’s just a guess.

        • RTIII

They should let the members of each local group vote on who should lead them – this can be done with not a lot of web page work. They already have the basic infrastructure. Call on people to host events to get their word out, generate web pages per geographic region, and have people nominate, campaign for and then vote for their local leadership then have all the leadership collectively drive the direction of the organization. THIS will work! LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE!

    • Shohanna

Don’t believe it. They want you to lose faith and lose the thread that he started. It’s all propaganda. There are plenty of other news orgs on Youtube that say otherwise.

      • MsPythia

Well, it’s not good that Bernie doesn’t seem involved in it much. I lost faith in Bernie from the moment he endorsed the candidate that embodies everything I stand against as a progressive. I didn’t join Our Revolution, and I won’t — I left the Democratic Party and am now giving my money to Jill Stein.

        • Shohanna

Same, but they will continue this so he does not change his mind about being blackmailed. They will probably make sure he loses his Senate seat too. Remember he went up against some heavy hitting money tards. This is their payback. He put his career on the line. He lost.

Why he lost we don’t know, but we can speculate. But he did lose. And unfortunately he lost his credibility and any kind of collaborative efforts he had been working on. He won’t be able to do anything in the Senate now.

          • MsPythia

What you’re saying is why I’ve never understood why he didn’t go all in and challenge the rigged nomination. What does he have to lose? He’s old now, and he has to know they’re going to go after him anyway.

        • kreskin

Warren and Sanders disgraced themselves and lost all credibility . The only question I have is why ?

Pentagon Has No Clue Where Hundreds of Thousands of Weapons Went

The U.S. government has shipped over 1.4 million guns to Iraq and Afghanistan since 9/11, according a new analysis by the U.K.-based watchdog Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), but the Pentagon is only able to account for fewer than half of them.

Bullshit. They know gawd-damned well where those weapons are.

    http://theantimedia.org/pentagon-no-clue-where-hundreds-thousands-weapons/

  • This is kind of libertarian definition for dummies… but I don’t know I guess I’ll post it anyway.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KElTidGHT5Y

    • Here’s the problem with Libertarianism: Its extremist right-wing economic philosophy inevitably generates an authoritarian social structure. Same effect occurs with extremist-left economic dogma (see: Stalinism).

    • kreskin

      A real sweetheart , wasn’t she ?

    • RTIII

That’s an OK video, but he missed some key points. For me, the biggest one is that Libertarianism depends on after-the-fact remedies for people who do bad things and then it’s basically too late, especially environmental crimes. We are too capable of doing bad things in a huge hurry. … Libertarianism might have worked out in a pre-industrial society, but not as things are today.

      • Yeah it was weak sauce.

Just a simple generic look at some the major flaws of libertarianism, weakly delivered as well.

        Good criticism RTIII

        • RTIII

          Thanks.

      • towerofbabel

        Good point.

      • EdgarHF

They also for some reason think there has been no philosophical progress since the enlightenment. Because of that, they all hammer on about natural rights. They don’t even have a clue that natural rights are a fallacy.

        • RTIII

I never bought into the “natural rights” argument as I heard it some decades ago – sounded like a logical stepping stone away from religion but not yet fully baked.

If you follow the “natural rights” logical argument – at least as I learned the argument in my youth – it leads you to BOTH concluding that might-makes-right (which many enlightenment people bought in to) and also that other animals have rights too (which they mostly did not buy in to), so they were hypocritical.

          But then, what society isn’t?

Either way, Libertarians always strike me as immature males, stuck in prepubescence having not yet worked out the implications of their thinking.

          • EdgarHF

For natural rights to be valid, after Chimpanzees and us split off from our common ancestors we, unlike the chimps, would have add to have broken of from a group society based on kindship and evolved into an individual based existence. Then as individuals we got back together and agreed to cooporate based on some ‘social contract’ for self protection. It’s silly when you think of it. It would not have been silly for the enlightenment philosophers as they had no knowledge of evolution.

        • Edgar or RTIII,

Have either one of you read The Acquisitive Society?

I am on a mission to find at least one other soul, that has read this book.

          • EdgarHF

            nope not I

          • Nuts!! I think you might enjoy reading it. I highly recommend it.

          • EdgarHF

I may give it a look. I will do a search on the book after work today.

          • He makes a argument against inherent right, or at least a better balance between inherent right and social function.

It’s by R. H. Tawney he was an English economist lived between the late 1800s and passed in 1962.

          • RTIII

            Not me…

          • Thanks, I didn’t know if you would see that post or not.

Wasn’t Barbara Boxer the woman responsible for the Nevada Caucus mess? The ones that Hillarycrats were so outraged that got booed?

    • RTIII

She’s one of my two Senators in CA, so no, she didnt’ preside over the Nevada caucus – I doubt she would have even been there…

      • SpiffyTheValiant

Am sure she was there and got booed or something. I remember that someone caused an uproar cause she got booed.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

I think we might have posted the same link.

          • LOL, didn’t see your comment. It hadn’t loaded.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

np. She needs to be exposed.

          • MsPythia

We all did! But I posted mine because I didn’t see that both of you had already posted this link! Sometimes posts don’t show for me here — not sure why…

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            <3

          • RTIII

            why… because of a Disqus bug…

      • No she was… people in Nevada wondered why she was there.

      • Annaleigh

She was there at the Nevada convention, taunted Bernie supporters, gave them the finger. Dolores Huerta was at the Nevada caucus…

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      This was the email.

Without Anita Hill, I never would have been elected to the United States Senate — and all the workthat we have done together would never have been possible.

When Anita Hill found the courage to speak truth to power in 1991, she changed history. We all watched the horrendous treatment she received by that all-male, all-white Senate Judiciary Committee as she testified about being
harassed by her then-boss, Clarence Thomas.

Voters across California and America saw that women were being shut out of the highest legislative body in the land and my candidacy, which had been a total long shot, suddenly became viable — and ultimately successful.

And it was all because of Professor Hill.

On Tuesday, I gave Anita Hill my annual Women Making History award — my final one as a senator. It was a historic and touching moment for me. Professor Hill spoke eloquently not only about her journey, but also about the future and the work we still must do to bring real equality to our nation.

With Republicans and their nominee, Donald Trump, continuing to attack voting rights, civil rights, and women’s rights, I know that our PAC for a Change has far more work to do — and I am asking you to step up and help now.

Time is running out. There are only 74 days left until this election. Just 74 days for our PAC to make a difference. Whatever you can give, $25, $10, $5, we will send to the Democratic Senate candidates who need our help to win.

If you can dig deep and make a $100 contribution, I will send you a personalized autographed copy of my new book: The Art of Tough: Fearlessly Facing Politics and Life.

Will you make a contribution to our PAC for a Change today?

The soul of our nation is on the line in this election.

Twenty-five years after Anita Hill showed us the true meaning of courage, we have the chance to make history come November.

We can elect the first woman president of the United States. We can take back the U.S. Senate. We can celebrate a great victory for our country — but only if we stand up today, tomorrow, and every day until Election Day.

Many thanks, as always, for everything.

      Sincerely,

      Barbara Boxer

      U.S. Senator

      • RTIII

She was booed in NV for that? Hmmm.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

No that’s the email she just sent me. in Nevada, if it was her, she was booed for changing the rules or something. I’ll see if I can find it.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

Ah yes, here it is. Yes, this bitch can take her girl power and go fuck herself with it. She can go boo herself right out of Congress. I’ll boo anyone that supports someone like Hillary. Civility? They deserve nothing but scorn and I hope their party is completely ruined for what they pulled this election.

          http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2016/05/15/barbara_boxer_to_nevada_democrats_if_you_boo_me_youre_booing_bernie_sanders.html

          • MsPythia

Yeah, she knew it was unfair, then after being booed for not caring that it was unfair she trolls the crowd. Fuck Barbara Boxer. I’m sorry I ever voted for her.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            exactly

        • MsPythia
      • EdgarHF

Anita Hill? Oh yes I remember those hearings. The GOP needed the Democratic Party’s help to confirm the Thomas pick and the Democrats came through. Remember that everytime you hear the, “But…but…the SCOTUS” meme on why we have to elect Hillary.

EXCLUSIVE: Witness Reveals Who’s to Blame for 2013 Ghouta Gas Attack in Syria

The chemical attack on Ghouta, Syria, took place in the early hours of August 21, 2013. The town was struck by rockets containing the chemical agent Sarin, killing innocent civilians. Iranian correspondent,
Shemshadi Hassan, witnessed the attacks and spoke to Sputnik about the tragedy.

Told ya, but no one ever listens to 17.

  • Annaleigh

So I got an email from AMERICAblog asking me to sign a petition to the AP asking them to “correct the record” haha about Clinton Foundation.

I sent this back and then unsubscribed: “Given that the AP prematurely called the Democratic nomination for Clinton before my state even had a chance to vote, I’m sure Secretary Clinton would have no problem telling them to stop the “smears” herself. I’ll be unsubscribing.”

    • MsPythia

      Nice. 😀

      • Annaleigh

        Thanks 😀

        • MsPythia

Pretty disgusting that they’re asking the truth to be suppressed.

          • Annaleigh

Yup, and worse that they’re using the plight of AIDS patients to do it.

          • MsPythia

Yeah. They don’t seem to understand that even if the Clinton Foundation did needed and necessary work, that fact doesn’t also let Hillary off the hook with her behavior regarding the conflict of interest, her destruction of evidence of that, and the obvious suggestions we now see of straight up pay to play.

          • Annaleigh

            Yup.

          • I second that yep.

          • The_Fixer

Would an embezzling preacher be excused simply because his church fed poor people?

I don’t think so. They are trying to conflate a person with an organization; not possible and it’s disingenuous. Hillary Clinton is not the foundation, although she and Bill run it. She doesn’t personally go out and do the good things that the foundation does, she simply collects the money to do so.

But she has used her office to better the foundation, and has given special access and favors to those who donated.

That’s buying influence, which is not legal.

    • Excellent Anna :^)

      • Annaleigh

        😀

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      good 🙂

    • Shohanna

      Nice! Good for you. 😀

    • The_Fixer

I got one, too. I read the article on his site this AM and posted about it here earlier.

I also unsubscribed. I have had more than enough of his cheerleading and making excuses for her. He has become one of those that Thomas Frank talks about – part of the clique that runs the Democratic Party.

No thanks. I respect some of his past work, particularly that in gay activism. However, that gave him access to the current crop of neoliberals running the party and he’s been sucked in.

I seldom look in there anymore. When I do, it’s the same talking points and the same shit excusing Hillary’s transgressions (when he isn’t outright denying them).

    • Dosido3

      good work, citizen…

    The U.S. Department of Clinton

    • SpiffyTheValiant

This surprises no one. But remember just because some prince gave the foundation 32 million dollars and then Hillary met with him, is not evidence of anything. We just dont’ know 😉

      • MsPythia

Her denials are pathetic. It will be interesting to see what else Assange releases on her. She’s so damaged already — even if her most loyal supporters keep saying everything is nothing.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

It just LOOKS like they were bribed. but we can’t possibly know.

Much like the idiots pretended they weren’t really sure if she was running for president for months.

          • Dosido3

there’s this thing we had in olden days called appearance of impropriety.
Now when a congressman and an intern leave a hotel room together and are adjusting their clothes, it doesn’t mean they did anything improper.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            of course 😉

          • Shohanna

Oh that went the way of the Dodo bird when they got Eliot and his “whores”. Fucking hypocrites.

Shawn Lucas Cause of Death Still Unknown as Clinton’s Campaign Lawyer Tries to Move DNC Lawsuit into the Weeds

According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Washington, D.C., it has still not determined a cause of death for Shawn Lucas, the 38-year old process server who delivered the class action lawsuit
against the Democratic National Committee and its then Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to the DNC headquarters on July 1.

It has now been more than three weeks since Lucas died with no cause of death announced.

Seismic Blasting From Oil Drilling: Impacts on Marine Life, Whales, Dolphins

“These animated maps clearly show that marine life, including dolphins and whales, would be profoundly impacted by the proposed seismic blasting,” stated Dr. Ingrid Biedron, marine scientist at Oceana.

With this kind of exploration, Oceana states, blasts are “repeated every ten seconds, 24 hours a day, for days to weeks at a time.” The impacts of such blasting, as the group has explained, can include temporary or permanent hearing loss, and, because whales and dolphins “rely on their hearing to find food, communicate, and reproduce, being able to hear is a life or death matter.” The Center for Biological
Diversity has also described the blasting as “actually a blunt-force weapon,” as it emits “the loudest human sounds in the ocean, short of those made by explosives.”

“British Companies Are Selling Advanced Spy Tech to Authoritarian Regimes”

Some of the UK companies were given permission to export their products to authoritarian states such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Egypt; countries with poor human rights records that have been well-documented to abuse surveillance technology.

“At a time when the use of these surveillance tools is still highly controversial in the UK, it is completely unacceptable that companies are allowed to export the same equipment to countries with atrocious human rights records or which lack rule of law altogether. There is absolutely a clear risk that these products can be used for repression and abuses,” Edin Omanovic, research officer at Privacy International, told Motherboard in an email.

No revelations can stop me from becoming president: Clinton

“I am sure, and I am sure because I have a very strong foundation of understanding about the foundation” and the charitable work it has done, Clinton said in an interview with MSNBC on Friday.

“We have gone above and beyond most of the legal requirements, beyond the standards to voluntarily disclose donors and to reduce sources of funding that raised questions — not that we thought they were
necessarily legitimate, but to avoid those questions,” she said.

“Congrats USA: Oxford Scientists Declare BOTH Trump & Clinton Likely Psychopathic”

Indeed, Trump scored in the top 20 percent across the board — landing him above both his frequent comparison, Adolf Hitler, but fairly less psychopathic than Saddam Hussein — and a higher tally in “negative” psychopathic traits than the other contenders. However, perhaps surprising to many, he topped the other three candidates in Fearless Dominance, associated with “successful presidencies.”

Clinton landed in a psychopathic similarity to Napoleon Bonaparte and Emperor Nero, with a Coldheartedness score on par with William the Conqueror and well above both Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

“Allowing for gender differences in percentile cutoffs,” Denton wrote, “her score was more on par with Trump’s.”

Indeed, Clinton scored highest in the Self-Centered Impulsivity, and highest there in Machiavellian Egocentricity — indicating a lack of empathy and detachment, which for better or worse, would fuel her desire to achieve personal goals.

“Brazilian Coca-Cola Manufacturer Accused of Slave Labor”

In a seven-month long inspection carried out by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor it was discovered that 179 truck drivers of Spal Brazilian Beverage Industries, which is a licensed manufacturer of Coca-Cola, had been forced to work excessive overtime hours, ranging from 80 to 140 extra hours per month.

Due to their demanding schedules, it was revealed that drivers were often denied sleep and rest between shifts, which according to Reporter Brasil, led to a variety of physical and mental health related issues, such as “body aches, stress, lack of interaction with family members and almost no leisure time.”

“Loris teen rescued from dangerous hole after dog alerts family”

Chris Cooper and dog Tuxx helped rescue Cooper’s brother, Jarad Johnson, from a hole in the Daisy community near Loris. On Monday night, Cooper said, Tuxx began pestering him. “I know my dog very well, and that wasn’t like him so I followed him,” he said. Cooper said he’d tried tossing the ball for Tuxx but the agitation didn’t stop. He followed Tuxx to an area on the family property and found his 17-year-old brother in a 10-foot hole with the ground caving in on him and groundwater rising. Cooper’s brother was trapped in the hole for more than five hours as more than 50 people tried to rescue him. Crews from Horry County Fire Rescue responded and were joined by the county public works, North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach fire departments. A medical helicopter from Whiteville, N.C., airlifted the man to Grand Strand Medical Center. The teen was released and able to come home on Wednesday. J

Lawmakers call Maine governor unhinged after obscene tirade

Maine’s bombastic Republican governor has built a reputation on his unfiltered comments, but his obscene tirade unleashed on a liberal lawmaker prompted Democratic lawmakers Friday to warn that the governor
was coming unhinged and to call for a political intervention.

HAHAHA Gattine hit the nail on the head and LePage is a fucking hypocrite and liar. What’s got his ass up in a blunder right there? OH RIGHT he is defensive over his racism and he fucking knows it. LePage needs to be removed from office, he threatened Gattine. Seriously, this shit is ridiculous and these people do not deserve to serve the people in any fucking capacity except behind bars.

War ‘Has Become a Permanent Condition’ for the United States: http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/veterans_for_peace_convention_speakers_discuss_how_war_has_become_a_permane

Did you know that Oliver Stone was a Vietnam vet? That explains a lot. No wonder he has come out so strongly against all the various American “war” fiascos since then. If you had suffered through all the shite that he did while fighting in Vietnam, you would most likely be anti-war as well.

Stone recently spoke at the annual Veterans For Peace convention here in Berkeley—and he had a lot to say too. “America’s crackpot realists create the terror for which they then provide the antidote.” Apparently it’s the American thing to do.

“In Vietnam, every time we took fire, we went berserk. We’d blow up everything. The mentality of absolute destruction. But when I came back from Vietnam, I thought that intelligence would finally start to reign. Didn’t happen. Reagan’s warning to the world was that Americans could be truly barbaric. That was the lesson of Hiroshima too—to let the Soviet Union know that America was capable of anything.”

Republicans For Hillary: Bush Advisor Wolfowitz Says He’ll Likely Vote for Clinton

In an interview, Paul Wolfowitz, 72, an advisor to former President Bush, discusses the dangers of a Donald Trump presidency, why he will likely vote for the Democrat’s candidate this year and mistakes made during the Iraq war.

Hillary is reaching out to her base.

      • cathyx

Maybe she’s trying to fill her war cabinet too.

        • s k

She probably already has a binder full of men from the MIC waiting for her.

        • MsPythia

She picked Salazar. So it’s a given she’ll be reaching “across the aisle” to pick warmongerers like herself for the war cabinet.

    • panem et circenses

The Bush-era neocons were always going to vote for Clinton. Many of them still work for or advise her and Obama. They’re “post-partisan”, just like banks and corporations. They get what they want no matter who’s elected or how many times they’re wrong.

      • MsPythia

Of course, they’ll keep that a secret as they rile up their base against “the Democrats.” Even though the word Democrat has been drained of all meaning at this point.

    • MsPythia

Of Course He Will! ALL the Neocons are voting for Shillz! She’s as disgusting and dishonest and pro-corporate and warmongering as they are!

      • cathyx

She’s going to assemble the same team that Georgie had, only do way more damage.

        • MsPythia

          Agreed.

      • SpiffyTheValiant

She ran in the wrong primary. She just ran as a Democrat because they generally don’t foam at the mouth as much. But the Republican party is where her “heart” is. (If you could call that blacken organ such a thing.)

Snopes trying to spin it. The company donated to the Clinton foundation, not Bresch personally. She just runs the company.

      http://www.snopes.com/mylan-ceo-clinton-foundation/

By that same metric, if could be said that the company raised the price, and not her personally. Snopes is a joke.

      • MsPythia

Snopes is in the tank for Shillz.

        • panem et circenses

Try telling a Hillbot that Martin Shkreli didn’t jack up the price of AIDS medication, it was the company he owns and runs.

          • MsPythia

I think we all realize at this point that there’s no talking in a serious way to Hillbots. They’re not serious people, and they avoid any truths that make themselves uncomfortable.

      • SpiffyTheValiant

Right because I’m sure the company did it, without the consent of its owner *eyeroll*

      • smkngman3

We need a site that debunks Snopes and Politifact it seems.

    • panem et circenses

Any bets on whether or not she’s “donating” to charities with Heinz in the name also?

Racist Paul LePage, Maine’s Governor would like for you to hear this message

Is he back to the top of the list for worst governor in America?

    good evening/afternoon.

    • Hi Nancy :^) How is your day going?

      • Nancy

was a good one-crossed of many things on the list! how about you dear Stephanie? a good one for you?

        • Pretty good day 🙂 I’ll be going to my son’s this weekend and I need to make components for some healthy brownies that I make. I can then give some to him and his wife for them to make for themselves. Glad to know that your day went well.

          • Nancy

oh that’s so kind of you! is this the one you were concerned about when there were the tornadoes?

          • Yeah. Bringing down a load of furniture as well.

This will be the first time that I’ve seen their new house that they just bought.

          • Nancy

            that’s pretty exciting!
            are you far from them?

          • It’s about a 21/2- 3 hour drive, depending on how many times I stop:)

          • Nancy

ahhh. not too bad then. hope you have a wonderful time!

          • Ty <3

    • s k

Hi Nancy, there is a lot of competition for the worst governor in America.

      • Nancy

oh there’s some worse than this guy?

        • SpiffyTheValiant

Well there is still Scott Walker…

          • Don’t forget Mike Pence…our lovely Contender from Indiana. So Scott Walker’s particularly loathsome.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

And isn’t Brownback still in charge in Kansas?

          • I believe so… good Lord Republican Governors are like cockroaches they are everywhere.

          • MsPythia

Truth! There’s SO many Republican Governors!

          • s k

Thanks to Obama going to the right, most of them got in 2010

          • MsPythia

They don’t acknowledge that and don’t really care it seems. But then, because they’ve moved so far right, it hardly makes any difference to the 1%, who are their owners. At some point, I hope people will begin to catch on. There’s one party now, and despite the labels they use, they’re all working for the same bosses.

          • Courtesy of the Koch brothers:/

          • SpiffyTheValiant

Because Democrats are spineless and as much as everyone loves cats, no one wants to elect a pussy for a governor. (I can say that here, right?)

          • You are the mod:)

          • SpiffyTheValiant

Well yeah but not THE mod :))

          • MsPythia

You’re setting the rules, you badass! <3

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            😉 <3

          • s k

Yeah, those morons just re-elected him.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            thought so.

        • s k

Don’t forget Rick Scott from Florida, as you can see there is a lot of competition.

          • Nancy

            there is…so many assholes.

    • MsPythia

Hi Nancy! Good to see you! That LePage guy has been a nut for quite a long time.

  • MsPythia

Keep in mind when you read this piece, that Shillz is currently selling herself to the GOP as THE business-friendly candidate and asking them to support and donate to her, and that while she was forced to come out and criticize the recent price-gouging of EpiPens, Mylan, the company that manufactures the EpiPen, has donated $250,000 to the Clinton Foundation in the past, and that the CEO of Mylan is Heather Bresch, daughter of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, and that Mylan’s PAC and their employees have supported Shillz for Prez, and have already donated $60,650 to her campaign.

“Two swing states decline DHS security for voting machines”

Two swing states, Pennsylvania and Georgia, are declining an offer from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to scan their voting systems ahead of the 2016 elections.

In August, DHS offered to help states thwart potential hacking amid cybersecurity concerns about just how easily a U.S. election could be manipulated.

Georgia and Pennsylvania, however, have opted out. Instead, the two states will rely on their own systems to monitor potential election hacking, reports NextGo

PBS Newshour removed criticism of Hillary Clinton, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and Obamacare from Judy Woodruff’s interview of Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein. The edits were discovered by a supporter of Stein, Matt Orfalea, when he compared the Facebook Live version with the broadcast and Youtube versions. Orfalea added the cut portion of the questions and posted it to YouTube.

I posted this on FB. they removed it saying I violated TOS!!!

      • What what was the rationale for the violation of TOS?

        • SpiffyTheValiant

Probably because facebook is whorebook for Hillary?

            My comment,

            Kudos to this writer!

Quite hard work coming up with three examples of any good the foundation has done.

          • Nancy

            yup-what fucking standards are those?

          • MsPythia

Their “standards” are an insult to the intelligence of thinking people. This isn’t the first time they’ve done this. I’ve posted things to my FB that no one ever sees at all and that later don’t even show in my feed, although I’ve never received a notice like you have. They’re in the business of electing Hillary. I hardly ever post to FB at this point for this reason. I don’t like censorship, and that’s what they’re doing every day now.

          • Nancy

I have never had anything removed and as you may have noticed-I let it fly on there.
I was totally disgusted with them I am not done with this yet.

          • MsPythia

You should put up Spiffy’s link. Same info, different package!

          • Nancy

same content. same video by the same guy.
            they would ban me.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

:)) No. Spiffy has figured out their system.

They are targeting righty wing sites. They saw Jill stein on Briebart and knew whta was going to happen.

Youtube could be anything. They don’t actually watch the videos, I doubt it.

          • Nancy

the one I posted yesterday wasn’t from Briebart. it was exactly the one you linked.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            Hmm..

Maybe they just don’t like canadians.

          • Nancy

I was all over FB yesterday slamming her…I wouldn’t be surprised if someone complained.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

🙂 Because Facebook wanted to pretend it didn’t have a political bias. ha.

          • Nancy

they are just another bought corporation of Hillary’s

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            yup

          • panem et circenses

You may have been reported by one of your friends or followers. Maybe they spammed reports until it was taken down.

          • Nancy

wouldn’t surprise me. there was a whole bunch of replies to a post I made about her bing a corrupt liar who took dark money! such fun!

          • cathyx

            Were there negative comments?

          • Nancy

not from the post about the video…I went on a rant on another one about someone taking dark money. I told them that she was the queen of that and they were all stupid to not acknowledge it…that one started fire!

          • It’s amazing the effort that people will go to to deny the truth.

          • cathyx

            Tell that to 17.

          • MsPythia

Oh, I didn’t realize it was from the same person!

          • Nancy

            yes…

          • SpiffyTheValiant
          • Wow!

          • Nancy

            right?

          • You have every right to be angry, I’m Furious myself:/

          • Nancy

do you have FB? post it if you want and see what happens.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

The link I gave Ms seems to be working for now…but post it again. She needs all the exposure she can gets.

          • Nancy

yes…especially on FB. I did that yesterday-should be interesting to see what happens to them today. did you post it?

          • SpiffyTheValiant

Nah i’m paranoid about posting things on fb. Who knows the next person I interview with, might be a hillarybot.

          • Nancy

            good point.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            yup

          • MsPythia

You don’t have to give them your FB link! It’s against the law for them to ask for it, and if they do, say (respectfully of course) that you know they have no right to look at that!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

i think they could probably figure it out.

          • No… I don’t have an account with Facebook, Twitter or Reddit.

          • Nancy

            probably a wise thing!

          • :^)

    • SpiffyTheValiant

So he removed the entire interview?

Dude, how fucked is it when breibart is more honest than PBS?

      • smkngman3

        Truly pathetic indeed.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

          Jesus. ;/

I’m going to post that to my FB, and to all my former Bernie groups on FB. Let’s see if they do the same to me…

        • SpiffyTheValiant

          Okay 🙂

        • MsPythia

Okay — posted to all my groups!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            HA SUCCESS.

You see that Facebook? I used Google to outsmart you. And Google, I know you are in the tank for that bitch, so that just makes it even sweeter. I USED THEIR OWN WEAPONS AGAINST THEM. MUHAHAHAHAA.

          • MsPythia

TONS of people are liking my post now! Now if they take it down they get to see it having 20+ likes.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

lol that ought to annoy them.

        • cathyx

Nancy should post it and see. Shout out to Nancy.

          • Nancy

I did yesterday cathy-they may ban me after the fact that they told me I violated TOS.

            Big Brother is watching you.

          • Nancy

yup-I have been very vocal lately about her being a liar and corrupt. not surprised…

      • towerofbabel

Thanks for reminding me why I will never watch P-BS again.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

          P-BS well done.

    • Dosido3

Wow. Some good reporting going on by the prog-letariat. Thanks Smoky!

      • MsPythia

I LOVE prog-letariat! Great name for us.

        • Dosido3

          😀

  • Dosido3

In other news Peter Daou, yeah that Peter Daou is linking to his place BNR and dissing David Sirota at the same time on Twitter. Sirota calls him out and also nicely schooled a follower on the fact that Yes! One can be appalled by the endorsements by extremists for both candidates! Imagine that!

    • MsPythia

David Sirota is the bomb. I love his writing and commentary. He’s pretty cute too.

      • cathyx

Being cute is VERY important to me too.

        • MsPythia

It’s the least important to me actually. I can have crushes on not so cute guys too. It’s intellect and principles that are the biggest turn ons. Oh, and I also like long walks on the beach! 😉

          • cathyx

I’m shallow, what can I say?

          • 17

I think she was talking about herself 😉

          • cathyx

            Flagged and downvoted!

Bolivian Minister Kidnapped, “Savagely Beaten To Death” By Striking Mineworkers

In a shocking development in Bolivia, striking workers – who were demanding more mining concessions with less stringent environmental rules – kidnapped and “savagely beat to death” 56-year-old Deputy Interior Minister Rodolfo Illanes.

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-08-26/bolivian-minister-kidnapped-savagely-beaten-death-striking-mineworkers

    • Nancy

      that’s awful.

      • 17

Depends on how you look at it. We could use a little of that team spirit here in America. Yeah, I went there.

        • “My mother said violence never solves anything.” “So?” Mr. Dubois looked at her bleakly. “I’m sure the city fathers of Carthage would be glad to know that…Anyone who clings to the historically untrue and thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never settles anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms.”

          • towerofbabel

Humanity would not exist without human sociability. None of those despots, criminals and villains would have existed without human sociability which preceded and followed them.

      • panem et circenses

        Is it?

        • Nancy

there is never any excuse to savagely beat anyone to death.

          • MsPythia

I agree. Savagery does not change things. It happens all the time, but it does not win people to our cause(s). And winning people to our causes is what makes the world turn.

          • Nancy

the level of violence in the so called “civilized world” is horrific.

          • “winning people to our causes is what makes the world turn.”

70+ percent of the American public is behind the ideals of progressives. So, have we made even the smallest dent in the power of the plutocrats?

          • cathyx

That’s a depressing question that i believe the answer to be no.

          • MsPythia

Are they? Not really. They know what they want to see, but most aren’t politically educated, and thus have no idea on how what they want can be achieved. They need that education — without that, we will get nowhere.

          • panem et circenses

How can what you want be achieved?

          • MsPythia

Resistance on all fronts. ALL FRONTS. This photo said a thousand things, and it was viral. Things like this are what people need to see A LOT OF.

          • 17

MsP….What exactly did she accomplish here?

          • towerofbabel

She communicated to, probably, millions of people through that image. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. And when the attack the protester or kill them people will be galvanized into political action.

          • MsPythia

Inspiration. Determination. Bravery. One viral photo — Major Accomplishment. That leads on to more of the same.

          • panem et circenses

What exactly did that photo achieve? Anything tangible? Is white supremacy defeated?

Protest works locally, on rare occasions, but it’s like bringing a bucket of water to a wildfire. New fires are cropping up all over as you put your small patch out.

          • MsPythia

What did that photo achieve? A lot. It’s beautiful, and it’s brave. It inspires others to be brave and beautiful too. Thanks to that photo, there are other people who will join her in the streets. The more people who join us in the streets, the more they’ll get others to share the photo and join us. That’s the fires that WE start and they come from the heart.

          • She was arrested and taken to jail. Police still continue to freely murder black Americans. This picture makes a good demonstration of what cowards the shock troops of the Oligarchy are, but that’s it.

          • towerofbabel

            Social change is never instant.

          • No, it took the oligarchs 40 years to get us here. But the bulk of it happened in a decade, 1976-1986. And the American Left has been failing to stop it, the entirety of the last 4+ decades. And now, the oligarchs have a grip on power that’s damn well never going to broken by marches and protests.

So, given the the American Left’s favorite tactics demonstrably don’t work at all, where do we go from here?

          • towerofbabel

There is no American Left to speak of–no serious Left. It has to be created. I think that is what we all agree on. How that happens is the question.

          • MsPythia

You’re right. Marches and Protests alone weren’t breaking things — but when they join with ideas like Occupy, and BLM, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and computer hackers and whistleblowers, and Berners/Stein activism all working in solidarity with each others goals against the status quo?

Let’s face it: it’s always been Solidarity that’s most necessary to what we’re trying to achieve.

          • towerofbabel

And how is solidarity fostered? Less through violence, in my opinion. But I agree, a combination of the brave carrot and the angry stick is often the best approach.

          • MsPythia

Yes. We need both. And we need to realize that people that are good at one can’t always be good at the other. Just like in every aspect of our lives, we all have our gifts. These struggles we engage in on the left are just like every other arena of our lives. 🙂

          • MsPythia

I’ve been arrested and taken to jail too. And I will continue to be if need be. I am not afraid of the oligarchy and willing to die for what I believe in, what I’m afraid of is that people are too afraid to do the same. But, at the same time, I realize that I was raised in a home where my grandparents were communists, and my parents were hardcore progressive activists. I got my political education from a young age, and I had a library at my disposal that taught me the lessons of radical history. With my own activism, I have to always keep in mind at all times that the people who I go out to engage in struggle with have not had that education, but whenever possible I share what I know — because the more you share, the more they’re curious to know. There is a science and long and incredibly interesting history to our struggles on the left, and that’s what we need to make people interested and curious about, even when we’re standing up in the here and now. It’s not an easy thing, but it’s always worth the time.

          • towerofbabel

That’s a lot but it’s not the end of it.

          • panem et circenses

“Dr. King’s policy was that nonviolence would achieve the gains for black people in the United States. His major assumption was that if you are nonviolent, if you suffer, your opponent will see your suffering and will be moved to change his heart. That’s very good. He only made one fallacious assumption: In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience. The United States has none.”- Stokely Carmichael

          • MsPythia

Actually, if we look at what really happened we see that there was Dr. King on the one hand and Malcolm and the Black Panther Party on the other. People nowadays like to call up the memory of King because he was on the pacifist side — the side that white America was most comfortable with, without mention that it was the THREAT posed by Malcolm X and the Panthers that worked in concert with each other. There is another example we can site of this two pronged attack that was effective in the Indian Independence Movement: the pacifism of Gandhi as opposed to the militancy of Bhagat Singh and his Naujawan Bharat Sabha — Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and the Kirti Kisan Party. Ultimately the powers that be realize they can have things one way or the other — but the masses of people are with them, and they are determined to meet their goals, so the existing power structure has no chance to win without ramping up nothing but violence, so ultimately they must cave to all the pressure. This is actually a perfect example of what I’m talking about — that it is the THREATS to widespread violence that will turn the tide in the ultimate sense.

          • towerofbabel

“That’s very good. He only made one fallacious assumption: In order for nonviolence to work, your opponent must have a conscience. The United States has none.”
I think this is dead on except this sentence which is hyperbole. It is an over simplification that is both true and false.

          • panem et circenses

The United States is a vassal of the capitalist class, to protect their wealth and property rights and expand their interests here and abroad. Conscience doesn’t play any significant role in the decision-making.

          • kreskin

            Not anymore it doesn’t .

          • panem et circenses

Wait, are you still under the impression that we have a government “for the people, and by the people”? You and I have zero effect on policy and are irrelevant to a conversation about the US.

          • MsPythia

No one who lives in America is irrelevant to having a conversation about the US. As for policy and claiming that we can have zero effect is how you produce zero effect. Defeatism is not how the left functions. Iron Determination is what we we’re about. We’ve never produced any change on the left without that.

          • panem et circenses

I’m a supporter of direct action. I’m just not a supporter of liberal reform-capitalist pacifism.

          • MsPythia

I’m a fan of both. In fact, as I’ve said here, I think both are necessary and that they need to work together. I’m a believer in the two pronged attack: the pacifists draw the pacifist types, the militants draw the militant types, together we draw large numbers in, and together the elites realize that they’re steadily losing power and can’t win no matter what they do. I’m a fan of less bloodshed in revolution. I don’t admire the Reign of Terror, or Stalinist tactics. I do think that it’s clear that winning through vast amounts of bloodshed and murder makes societies into beasts, and I think it should be avoided where possible.

          • towerofbabel

“The United States” cannot have a conscience because it is not a “human being”–it is a nation state, a social and political construct. Yes, it is made up of human beings of all sorts–and they are morally fluid depending on their social situation. But society is always an aggregate of individuals and these issues must therefore be addressed individually.

          • panem et circenses

When I talk about the United States, I’m not talking about society, I’m talking about government, the people who set rules for society. So was Carmichael.

          • MsPythia

            You’re both right. 😉

          • towerofbabel

Sounds good but fortunately or unfortunately it is not that simple. George Carlin, who is posted in this thread, knew that. The United States is the aggregate in total, and also affiliated with virtually all human societies. So the inertial is real.

          • kreskin

Civil rights demonstrations , the Vietnam war demonstrations … they had a big effect .

          • They weren’t very peaceful either, by and large. And there was A LOT of violent resistance going on, too. Weather Underground, anyone?

          • towerofbabel

This is what I mean by self sacrifice. Putting oneself in harms way with out fear–and in public–is powerful because it activates people on a moral level through human empathy.

          • MsPythia

            Exactly.

          • towerofbabel

            Martyred.

          • MsPythia

In that moment that’s how she might appear to some, to others she looks like a beautiful warrior. (That’s how I view her.) But in fact she did not die, this woman lived to tell that tale and to inspire so many others who share her views! As a student of that history, I know that this is how our struggles on the left have always been won. I have endless admiration for her, and all others like her.

          • I promise you, people don’t want a political education, and they’re not going to accept it. They will, no matter the intent, see it as condescension and react negatively, and, again, the Oligarchs will use that to their advantage. Just look at how “conservatives” react every time some well meaning “liberal” tries to tell them why they’re “wrong”

Over and over progressive ideas poll as widely popular, but unwillingness of the American Left to actually fight for its values, has left evil in control. Its content to put on clown-show “marches” and fill up, promptly round-filed, Internet petitions. Just look: Immoral fucks like the Bundy’s take action, and get exactly what they want, while the American left just gets pandered to.

Now, I’m not suggesting emulating the Bundy’s, exactly, but the American Left has to wake up to the fact that 40 years of these 60-radial tactics have only dug a deeper and deeper hole for the American Left, and for Americans as a whole.

          • MsPythia

People DO want a political education. They were getting one with Bernie, and he filled stadiums. Yes, it seemed a bit boring to us who already have that education, but I can assure you that it was electrifying to those who didn’t have one prior to hearing what he had to say.
The reason that Bernie was treated like a pariah and blatantly cheated out of winning the nomination is because the elites were SCARED of that power, and that message he was spreading. People want that education so bad that I’m shocked to hear a brilliant guy like you say that you don’t think that’s true!

          • What they were getting with Bernie wasn’t an education. What they got was someone actually promoting the things they already wanted. And someone who at least pretended to be willing to fight for it.

          • MsPythia

And then, he didn’t fight for it. But they still want it. So, it’s their fight now.
Btw, I disagree that they weren’t getting an education. I worked as a volunteer for Bernie’s campaign, and I know for a fact that there were many people young and old that got one hell of a good political education as a result of his campaign — both good AND bad.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

i know I got a hell of an education. I actually thought the Democrats were the good guys.

          • towerofbabel

            You are both right, actually.

          • towerofbabel

The Bundys were treated with kid gloves because they personify the antisocial interests of the oligarchy. That same oligarchy wants nothing more than violence from the left because they can turn the broad-middle against us. And don’t underestimate what they are willing to do when they feel they have a public license for violence against the Left. This is exactly what they want.

          • towerofbabel

70+ percent of the American people are actually asleep still.

          • They’re not alseep, they just feel powerless, because they see those who say they are fighting for them are ineffectual at bringing change, or, worse, liars who actually work to make things worse (see: The Democratic party).

So some this means trying to protect themselves by trying to be invisible to the ruling elite, for others it means letting themselves be co-opted by the ruling elite, hoping that leads to safety. Very few people are actually truly ignorant of what’s going on. And I’d bet many of those are just in a state where they won’t even admit to themselves that they know.

          • towerofbabel

“And I’d bet many of those are just in a state where they won’t even admit to themselves that they know.” Agree. That’s what I meant.

          • 17

So Musellini should have been coddled? That’s just one example. And If it’s ok to wish bankers are strung up from lamp posts, or the Bush / Cheney duo hanged at the Hague, then why can we not wish death on others? The dead really don’t mind how they’re killed, I think.

          • Nancy

please show me where I said he should be coddled.
you have no idea what the dead think of how they are being killed 17.

          • 17

            I knew this was coming.

          • Nancy

lol, I am not going to get into a discussion about this with you. I stand by my comment-it’s my opinion and how I feel about it.
we are not on the same page and I am cool with that.

          • MsPythia

There are only two things that make the elites nervous. Overwhelming support of the masses, and the THREAT of mass violence, not actual acts of violence. The way overwhelming support is garnered is by non-violent action in the face of clear violence and oppression, and when you have the people with you, the threat that you will do the same to the elites is what scares them most. When you begin doing acts of violence BEFORE you have the vast majority on your side, that’s how you get murdered, demonized, and sidelined.

We on the left need to take this lesson from history, and when we do, there is NOTHING that can stop us.

          • MsPythia

And btw, I am not a pacifist.

          • The problem with threats of violence only, is that your opponent eventually catches on to that game. What’s important, I think, is the willingness to resort to violence and, I’m sorry to say, that’s something the American Left, pacified by decades of not standing up for itself, and lies about protesting and petitions, has repeatedly demonstrated that it will simply not do. And the oligarchs are gleefully aware of that and they have no such compunctions about visiting genocidal violence against their enemies, internal or external. 🙁

          • panem et circenses
          • MsPythia

I agree that the American and European left have hurt themselves for too long — but it’s not because they didn’t resort to enough violence, it’s because their message wasn’t delivered in a way that could get the people to rally to their side. And understand, I’m not saying that I never think acts of violence can’t be effective, but only that it’s dangerous to engage in many of them without having the people with you first. People are being oppressed and murdered in numerous and various ways under capitalism, but we need to raise awareness, and that’s where we’re failing, and have been failing. The mass of people have to understand what the issues are — and we’re dealing with a media that is firmly on the side of the oligarchs, so it’s harder to make our message spread. Yet, that is our task if we want to wield real power.

          • towerofbabel

When one man or woman stands up against the oligarchs with violence one man or one woman is dead and vilified. End of story. Public awareness and public unity are essential for resistance and self sacrifice is essential to have any effect whatsoever. BTW, that is why disappearing is one of the favorite tools of authoritarians today. It leave everyone in the dark.

          • towerofbabel

            I’m with you.

          • cathyx

No one should be systematically killed because they are believed to be bad. Coddled? Not sure what you mean by that, but everyone deserves humane treatment, a trial by jury by their peers, and then fair treatment if found guilty. I hate torture and executions.

          • Yes exactly there is a line.

Making an argument for war is a separate issue than how we are going to conduct and govern ourselves, even in Wartime.

nobody says it quite the way George did.
I wonder what he’d have to say about this clusterfuck of a primary and election?

      • SpiffyTheValiant

        George: People are FUCKING stupid!

        • Nancy

that would be a good start!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            lol

      • RTIII

        He has already said it!

        • Nancy

I’d love to hear “his new and improved specifically to Hillary” version.

    • cathyx

      Wow, that is sooo depressing.

    • MsPythia

It just points up the sad fact that it’s the people on the left who most often get demonized and assassinated. The left has always been treated like an enemy — despite the fact that we’re the only ones who make a fucking lick of sense!

      • Nancy

and imagine that-now we plainly see that the enemy is masquerading as members of the left.

        • MsPythia

Depressing isn’t it? To realize that people you thought were your allies really never were. There’s an old leftist view that things always divide into two. That there are the people who really believe in the causes, and those that just mouth platitudes but don’t take ideas to heart. That’s what I think we’re seeing. It’s hard, but it’s also good to know which side of the barricades you stand on.

          • Nancy

            exactly.
it’s like anything else. good to see people for who they are.
then I know how to proceed.

      • Unka, I’m on the hunt to see if anybody on this forum has read the book The Acquisitive Society.

        • I haven’t read it, though I know quite bit about its philosophies, as I’ve had some overview of Tawney, as a part of an economic course. I’ll put the book on my list, and let it cut the line.

          • Thanks, I was for sure that you would have read it, but oh well.

If you do read it, tell me what your thoughts are on it.

The weather is just fine. I used a blanket last night because of the cool breeze blowing in the window. If I climbed up a nearby mountain, I bet I could see N Korea today. (People do that here.)

I solved my LG android problem, really annoyed with the workaround which I’m sure will only work until Google decides to break something again. I borrowed a Samsung Galaxy and now that one is giving some weird crashes though I think that has to do with the crossplatform library we’re using, bah.

          • Yes.

        • Left of Eden

Then we’ll be stuck with Kaine. Ditto for if medical incapacity prevents her from becoming president. There were reasons for picking Kaine – to take over in the event Hillary is unable to perform her duties, and as Assange likely correctly points out – making good on political promises (succumbing to blackmail?) limits her options.

This is written by the Jackass that claimed Bernies Civil Rights photos were not Bernie.

“Jill Stein’s foul language on race”

Listening to her policy prescriptions on Thursday was a 70-minute rhetorical stroll through fantasyland with a mindless revolutionary who believes leading the United States “is not rocket science.” For instance, Stein said, “We need an emergency wartime-scale mobilization to create 100 percent clean renewable energy by 2030.” Yet her explanations of how she would make that happen in a gridlocked Washington betrayed a stunning lack of basic understanding of the political process she seeks to helm.

Wendy Davis? I remember her and her fight for Planned Parenthood in Texas. Alas, another tribute falls:

    https://twitter.com/Anya_vi/status/769378105467166720

    • all_hail_the_hypno_toad

She would be a Republican in any other state.

    • SpiffyTheValiant

Disappointing, you’d think a woman who would publicly fight for abortion rights in Texas would have more courage. Oh well. She’ll just be another One Hit Wonder. Wendy please go take our seat besides Warren. That will be all, my dear.

      • all_hail_the_hypno_toad

She wasn’t really pro choice though, she supported limitations just like Hillary.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

Well define limitations. I mean if she’s against abortion at nine months or something, I can live with that.

          • all_hail_the_hypno_toad

Any abortion ban based on the lie of “fetal pain”—a lie that Davis debunked in her filibuster—is there for no other purpose but to make women’s lives harder, so it’s frustrating to see Davis come out with those statements. She is clearly banking on the fact that the 20-week ban is, realistically speaking, a minor issue when it comes to the broader attacks on abortion rights. Though we talk about these later-term abortions as if they are an epidemic, abortions after 20 weeks are a tiny fraction of abortions overall, just a little more than 1 percent of all abortions. A large chunk of these would still be legal under the kind of ban Davis says she could support, with broad rights to terminate in cases where a doctor advises it for medical reasons, since many fetal abnormalities aren’t discovered or pregnancy complications don’t arise until after 20 weeks.

Still, most of the rest of the post-20-week abortions occur because it’s so hard to get an early term abortion in the first place, especially if you’re poor or geographically isolated, something that the new Texas law will make significantly harder. Davis’ stance means turning her back on women who get post-20-week abortions because they couldn’t get the money and time together to do it earlier—the women she was fighting for when she stood all those hours to keep clinics open so that women wouldn’t have to travel so far and wait so long in the first place.
So why is Davis, a hero to the pro-choice movement, supporting any sort of 20-week ban? While 54 percent of Americans oppose attempts to shut down abortion clinics, 56 percent also believe that it’s best to ban abortions after 20 weeks, likely because the anti-abortion movement has been so good at spreading the lie that fetuses feel pain after 20 weeks. By opposing all the parts of the Texas law aimed at shutting down clinics while offering tentative support to a hypothetical ban on abortions after 20 weeks, Davis aligns herself with the majority view on the subject of abortion. You may have bought her sneakers, but when it comes down to it, Wendy Davis is a politician.

            http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2014/02/12/wendy_davis_supports_20_week_abortion_ban_a_surprise_a_betrayal_a_smart.html

          • all_hail_the_hypno_toad

Except for those instances where cancer happens or abnormalities in the fetus etc.

          • MsPythia

Scientists in the UK have already determined many YEARS AGO that a fetus does not have the capacity to feel pain until the third trimester because their brains aren’t connected to pain centers in their nervous systems yet. The UK is free to engage in such scientific study because their society isn’t ruled by Christian Anti-Science assholes and tightassed Neoliberals of the Democratic Party like Shillz and most of her other minions in the party.

I’m worried about Julian Assange. This is not a maternal instinct, but rather, a pragmatic one. The Justice Department lawyer who disclosed the secret and warrantless surveillance program then-President George W. Bush adopted in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks was publicly censured Thursday by a federal appeals court for breaching legal ethics. As a Lawyer for the Justice Department’s Intelligence Policy and Review unit, Thomas Tamm violated professional conduct rules for disclosing to The New York Times “confidences” and “secrets,” the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit concluded. (PDF)

As part of his Justice Department duties, Tamm was tasked with requesting electronic surveillance warrants from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. The District of Columbia Court of Appeals Board of Professional Responsibility said Tamm became aware in 2004 that certain applications to that FISA Court for national security surveillance authority “were given special treatment” and he leaked details of the program to the newspaper.

    Headline on RS:

Here’s how the GOP is already planning to make Hillary Clinton’s life miserable for the next 4 years

Me: The enemy of my enemy is my temporary ally. How can I assist you in this matter, Republicans?

    • notisaidthepig

      So wise!

      • SpiffyTheValiant

        I’ll just tell the Republicans…

You hate this bitch. I hate this bitch. Let’s work together to achieve our goals. After we end her political career, we can go back to fighting as usual. Deal?

    • MsPythia

I hate them both. I’m not afraid to be an enemy of the rotten state of America. They can kiss my firm progressive ass.

      • 17

        Pics or GTFO! 😉

  • notisaidthepig

I hear Thom Hartmann continues to bash Jill Stein. So disappointing!

    • SpiffyTheValiant

I have to use this again…

I feel like he should get another meme. He has Brunch with Bernie for years, so you would think he would be supporting the woman who is closest to Bernie in ideals. But he’s just too fucking terrified of Trump to do otherwise. Very sad. He’s been beaten into submission. Well I guess that’s why he’s an academic and not a worry. (not that you can’t be both.)

    • towerofbabel

Apparently Thom has feigned fairness and gentility for his whole career. What a way to end it.

    • MsPythia

      Fuck Thom Hartmann. Sell Out.

      • SpiffyTheValiant

Don’t hold back now. Tell us how you really feel.

        • MsPythia

          Did! 😀

            <3 lol

  • Edwin

My grandfather used to dress like Col Sanders when we went to get chicken (he loved the stuff). People would point and wave at our car. One time in the store the girl disappeared to the back for a bit and then came out and said, “I’m sorry sir, but you’ll have to pay.”

He also spoke Japanese and gave me firecrackers and cigarettes to play with (but that’s another story.)

Has anyone told you how amazing you are? I bet they have! Your awesome!

          • notisaidthepig

Sorry, Spiffy. I don’t understand (it’s late on Friday for a pig!). This is what someone wrote about Pelican. Right?

          • SpiffyTheValiant

😛 No, it’s a review someone left on one of my stories.

          • notisaidthepig

Oh, that is INDEED awesome. Congratulations! And Kudos! And Bravo!!!

You make sure you keep right on writing. To improve your skills, you have to practice. Write every day if you can. Hemingway famously said something like…if you only write a single page a day at the end of a year you have a book. Do it!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

<3 yes, i has other reviews, but without reading the story, they might be a bit confusing if they weren't general like that. ^.^ Plus I don't want to spam peeps.

Libertarian fantasy. “If only you’d lower taxes on the already tax-less corporations, and removed any environmental and worker protections, the inner-cities would be saved.”

If you listen to how this all came to be it’s on the flimsiest authority and sounds downright illegal. (They made shit up as they went along.) -2 hours-

The United States of Secrets chronologically accounts the
Bush administration’s embrace of illegal and widespread dragnet
surveillance and eavesdropping programmes, along with the Obama
administration’s decision to not only continue them, but to dramatically
expand them—despite denials and promises to the contrary. By weaving
narratives by those who sought to blow the whistle on these programmes
over the decades—culminating with Edward Snowden’s unprecedented dump of
insider documents in 2013—we see how and why those inside the NSA and
other government agencies came to act; what actions were effective, and
what role the mainstream media had and continues to have in keeping such
secret projects alive and untouchable in the name of ‘national
    security.’

I’m just about done. It starts out a bit boring– ho-hum, until they get to the meat of what was going on in the bu$h junta. They are all fucking liars and law-breakers. They work in tandem: we don’t really have the authority, but if we get enough heavy hitters to lie and back us up– well then, good enough. Even the good guys aren’t good (big surprise). I’m now coming into the Obama administration part, with 10 min left.

Then he tells about briefing the prez in “The Oval”, like he’s so hip and so in and that’s what all the right people call it, The Oval. Fucking evil smirky little douchebag. (He made me fucking sick!!!) Actually all of them in the vid made me sick. Fucking monsters!!

OK, looks like it’s time to call it. The Hildabeast has a “Vagenda of Manocide”. It’s going to be hard to beat this bit of hoofwankery. A gunsmith out in Maine has a history of putting up idiotic political signs blaming “Demo-rats” for everything from Ebola to the Crusades. As one of the comments pointed out I think Vagenda of Manocide beats Hoofwanking bunglecunts as my new favorite phrase. I want to put together a girl band called Vagenda of Manocide. • Edwin

Good morning. Never heard of him.

(lovely cool breeze tonight and dry air) 😀

      • 17

Good mornin’ Edwin. There’s a reason why you’ve never heard of him. He’s tragically mislabled as “Comedian”.

        • He is, for me, a canonical example of the “Reciprocity-driven Obligatory Laugh” phenomenon. Aka “Hey, you can see I tried here to be funny, it’d only be polite to laugh.” that only works because of twisted parts of American culture have gotten towards the idea of “Go Along To Get Along.”

          • Edwin

            *please clap

          • *from here:

“Reciprocity is not only a strong determining factor of human behavior; it is a powerful method for gaining one’s compliance with a request. The rule of reciprocity has the power to trigger feelings of indebtedness even when faced with an uninvited favor and irrespective of liking the person who executed the favor.”

          • Edwin

We are very weird creatures. We think we’re free and independent, but we are full of hang ups and prejudices, we are prisoners of custom and social mores, ruled by sex and our urge to procreate, etc., etc., and so on. (If you ever doubt it, drop acid and observe. :-D)

It’s no wonder aliens fly right past our planet. Who can blame them?

        • towerofbabel

So he has to stand up in front of drunken audiences and pretend to be funny?
This is a huge cross to bear.

  • The rules of compliance that, whether one believes it or not, whether one “knows and resists” it or not, controls our behavior, every day of our lives. Really, I think most of us have no clue how much these techniques are used to herd us, all of us, and are even less willing to admit that they do so.

    Reciprocation

People generally feel obliged to return favors offered to them. This trait is embodied in all human cultures and is one of the human characteristics that allow us to live as a society.

Compliance professionals often play on this trait by offering a small gift to potential customers. Studies have shown that even if the gift is unwanted, it will influence the recipient to reciprocate.

A variation on this theme is to ask for a particularly big favor. When this is turned down, a smaller favor is asked for. This is likely to be successful because a concession on one side (the down-scaling of the favor) will be reciprocated by a concession by the other party (agreement to the smaller favor).

    Commitment and consistency

People have a general desire to appear consistent in their behavior. People generally also value consistency in others.

Compliance professionals can exploit the desire to be consistent by having someone make an initial, often small, commitment. Requests can then be made that are in keeping with this initial commitment.

People also have a strong desire to stand by commitments made by providing further justification and reasons for supporting them. This pattern of behavior toward or resulting in a negative outcome is called escalation of commitment.

    Social proof

People generally look to other people similar to themselves when making decisions. This is particularly noticeable in situations of uncertainty or ambiguity.

This trait has led compliance professionals to provide fake information on what others are doing. Examples of this are staged interviews on television advertisements or “infomercials”.

Also called “Group think”, examples of this are when you see on products like toothpaste “America’s #1 Toothpaste” it will subconsciously influence you to buy.

Politicians use this all the time, just by having people standing behind them gets them more voters from people watching at home..

    Liking

People are more likely to agree to offers from people whom they like.

There are several factors that can influence people to like some people more than others:

Physical attractiveness can give people a “halo” effect whereby others are more likely to trust them and think of them as smarter and more talented.
People tend to like people who are most like themselves.
People tend to like those who pay them compliments.
People who they are forced to cooperate with to achieve a common goal tend to form a trust with those people.
People tend to like people that make them laugh. For example, many lectures start with a joke.
Any one of the above methods may not help influence people, but used in combination, their effects can be magnified.

    Authority

The Milgram experiment ran by Stanley Milgram provided some of the most stunning insights into how influential authority can be over others.

People often act in an automated fashion to commands from authority, even if their instincts suggest the commands should not be followed.

    Scarcity

People tend to want things as they become less available. This has led advertisers to promote goods as “limited availability”, or “short time only”.

It has also been shown that when information is restricted (such as through censorship), people want the information more and will hold that information in higher regard.

Items are also given a higher value when they were once in high supply but have now become scarce.

    * And yes, I know I repeat this, but it’s important to let this get by your censors, to truly Grok how much it drives so much of our consumer/political culture..

    • cathyx

The part about reciprocation reminded me of this:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r-3oZC9AQ0

      • Or Watergate. Liddy’s original request wasn’t to break into the offices at the Watergate, but to rent a yacht and dozens of hookers and entrap & blackmail Nixon’s opponents. But he slowly backed down the size of his requests, until, by the time he got to the break in, it seemed reasonable.

    • cathyx

And if you go against these norms, you’re considered odd and won’t be liked.

      • They’re not even norms, so much as hard-wired mental triggers to automatic behaviors* When the trigger is pulled/button pushed, we just do the behavior, on auto-pilot. Cialdini calls them “click-whirr”: Click the button and whirr goes the little robot in us.

Mornin’ Anneleigh! These people are killin’ me. I understand not wanting Hillary, but how do you get from supporting Bernie to voting for Trump?

      • Annaleigh

        Morning 17! I don’t get it either.

      • panem et circenses

There are several issues where Trump’s rhetoric has actually been to the left of Clinton, but in order to support him you’d first have to believe he actually means it, ignore him flipping back and forth on some of those issues, and ignore all the other issues where his ideas and rhetoric are fucking terrible.

        • 17

Yeah, and I don’t look good in white sheets nor Jackboots.

          • panem et circenses

I think the people in white sheets and jackboots are mostly projecting their values onto Trump based on the media narrative of super-villainy and his attempts to be edgy more than anything. If he were ever to be elected, they’d be just as disappointed as they are when any of the other capitalist stooges are in charge, because he’s the same old mild racist and nationalist as all the other presidents have been, just with a much bigger mouth.

    • Oi! What kind of idiocy is that. I wonder if he got “hired as an adjunct professor at Trump University” or something…

    • panem et circenses

There are some solidly on the left who’ve said the same thing, for instance the staff at TGP:

Why Sanders Supporters Should Vote for Trump

      http://www.greanvillepost.com/2016/08/17/opeds-why-sanders-supporters-should-vote-for-trump/

I’d never vote for Trump or Clinton, but they list their reasoning from a left wing perspective. I know of a few other hardcore Sanders supporters who’ve done the same.

    • cathyx

Honestly, as long as they don’t vote for Clinton, I don’t care that much.
