Sweet Mystery of Life (Open Thread)

We all know, by now, that yesterday we lost the great Gene Wilder. Here’s a great “Five Minute” rendition of Young Frankenstein, what seems to be peoples’ favorite of his movies.

Some things about Gene, that you may not have known…

Wilder was born Jerome Silberman on June 11, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Jeanne (Baer) and William J. Silberman, a manufacturer and salesman of novelty items. His father was a Russian Jewish immigrant, as were his maternal grandparents. He adopted “Gene Wilder” for his professional name at the age of 26, later explaining, “I had always liked Gene because of Thomas Wolfe‘s character Eugene Gant in Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time and the River. And I was always a great admirer of Thornton Wilder.” Wilder first became interested in acting at age 8, when his mother was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and the doctor told him to “try and make her laugh.”

Wilder began his career on stage, and made his screen debut in the TV series Armstrong Circle Theatre in 1962. Although his first film role was portraying a hostage in the 1967 motion picture Bonnie and Clyde, Wilder’s first major role was as Leopold Bloom in the 1968 film The Producers for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This was the first in a series of collaborations with writer/director Mel Brooks, including 1974’s Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, which Wilder co-wrote, garnering the pair an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Wilder is known for his portrayal of Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and for his four films with Richard Pryor: Silver Streak (1976), Stir Crazy (1980), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989), and Another You (1991). Wilder directed and wrote several of his own films, including The Woman in Red (1984).

His third wife was actress Gilda Radner, with whom he starred in three films. Her death from ovarian cancer led to his active involvement in promoting cancer awareness and treatment, helping found the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Center in Los Angeles and co-founding Gilda’s Club.

After his last contribution to acting in 2003, Wilder turned his attention to writing. He produced a memoir in 2005, Kiss Me Like a Stranger: My Search for Love and Art; a collection of stories, What Is This Thing Called Love? (2010); and the novels My French Whore (2007), The Woman Who Wouldn’t (2008) and Something to Remember You By (2013).

US-Saudi War Crimes, Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis: Civilian Killings, Famine, Refugees. The Western Media’s Remorseless Silence

While the slaughter of Yemenis continues, the world remains silent in response to their screams. Why is that? Has the world lost its senses, especially to feel the sufferings of the tormented? In an alleged effort to defeat the Houthi rebels, a coalition of Arab states led by Saudi Arabia, supported by the United States and the United Kingdom have been bombarding Yemen, already one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, with air-strikes since March 2015, sending it literally back to the stone-age.

Crazed Hillary Clinton and the Prospects of World WAR III. Can Americans Overthrow “The Evil” That Rules Them?

Paul Wolfowitz and the lies that he told in the high government positions that he held are responsible for a massive number of deaths and massive destruction in seven countries. Wolfowitz has announced his vote for Hillary Clinton. Does this make you feel reassured?

Saudi Arabia, Israel have even alienated allies

Foreign Minister Zarif says behind-the-scenes evidence shows that even governments considered friendly to Riyadh and Tel Aviv have grown fed up with their atrocities.

• Corrupt religious extremists with a God Complex and a raging hatred of women.

I always wondered, if homosexuality is indeed genetic, could it be that the entire male population of the House of Saud carries such a gene, but is so psychologically closeted as to never admit their feelings, but instead takes their frustrations out on all the women they see as to blame, or something like that?

Microsoft services to crack down on ‘hate speech’

For hate mongers on the internet, Microsoft would become judge, jury and executioner. On Friday, the software conglomerate rolled out a new system for airing grievances regarding hate speech posted on
Microsoft-hosted services.

Guess where this is headed.

NFL Anthem-Sitter Colin Kaepernick Is More Patriotic Than His Critic
http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2016/08/nfl-anthem-sitter-colin-kaepernick-is.html

• Well, that’s not really a surprise, to me. That’s that classic Authoritarian-Projection in action.

• BTW Am I right in thinking that this is that “didn’t stand” thing the press is using as its current distraction? Not having a regular “TV” streaming service, I tend not to be sure.

• 17

You are correct. He’s the newest “Traitor” to distract from the real perps.

• panem et circenses

I don’t think the media is all that supportive of Kaepernick and would prefer to bury it, particularly with what he had to say about Clinton. It just gets too many clicks for them to do so. On a plus side, young people are waking up to things most of our generations have taken for granted without question for far too long, and aren’t as easily fooled by what they see in the news and on TV.

• I’d assume they wouldn’t be supportive, not that that would stop them from using a non-issue to distract from real issues, like the US invading Syria. They certainly don’t need to approve of this guy’s actions, to plaster their criticism over as many minutes of airtime as possible.

• I remember, not so long ago, when I was regularly impressed by the content on Vox. Now, I regularly wretch at the content on Vox.

The Sad Decline of VOX: How a Once-Promising Media Outlet Became a Bastion of Neoliberal Corporatism

Back in April, the watchdog group FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting), put out a story about how VOX, known for being run by former Washington Post columnist Ezra Klein, published a “glowing” story by Matthew Yglesias, about Goldman Sachs without disclosing a substantial financial interest it had in the financial giant.

The article, titled, “Why Goldman Sachs just started offering savings accounts for the masses,” included such lines as “What Goldman Sachs has that other online banks don’t is a widely recognized brand name built on excellence in other dimensions of financial services that could help further push internet banking beyond the early adopter demographic.” Though it flew under the radar of the mainstream media, to those paying attention, the piece revealed a disturbing decline for what began in 2014 as a promising new media outlet—a transformation into a source for neoliberal, pro-corporate propaganda disguised as left wing punditry, just two years after its inception.

• MsPythia

Maybe he was well paid for that.

• Classical authoritarian behavior. Even if they can’t think of a good excuse for arresting you, they’ll spend tens of thousands to millions of dollars to play childish games with those they perceive as “enemies.” Just childish.

Department of Homeland Security Has Surprise for Bernie Supporters at DNC Lawsuit Hearing

But throughout these interviews, there was a constant, annoying, and distracting honking coming from an SUV parked on the sidewalk. One gutsy interviewee, who goes by the Facebook name of Jessica Rose Grfl, strolled down to the SUV, peered inside, and tells the videographer that this is an unmanned vehicle. The honking appears to be by remote control. Ramierez and her videographer move closer to the SUV and show viewers that it is from the Federal Protective Service of the Department of Homeland Security. (Go To -31:00 in the video)

• Eight. Eight Years. That’s the term of office the oligarchs have decided that the country’s figurehead should serve for.

:(..

• Ann Watson

All is ‘black’ or ‘white’?

• MsPythia

Haven’t you already seen how anyone who questions Clinton in any way is labeled sexist and misogynist? I have. Many times. In fact, I’ve been called those things during this election season more times than I can count. The same has been true for Obama with the racist label, even though I donated and worked my ass off to get him elected when he ran against Clinton, I am not allowed to criticize his neoliberalism without vicious criticism.

• Ann Watson

Simplistic labels serve a very useful purpose, they divide people into convenient ‘us’ and ‘them’ categories and avoid any uncomfortable shades of grey.
How are you, by the way? ; )

• MsPythia

Indeed. I’m doing great — nice to see you here! 🙂

• Ann Watson

Thank you!
I’m glad to find you all safe and well. ; )

• MsPythia

😀

• SpiffyTheValiant

I’m such a misogynist, I was born a woman because I thought that might make me immune from sexism charges. But the clintonites are just so clever, they found me out. Damn.

• And: Morning Ms P!

• SpiffyTheValiant

Well it’s been at least a year so far.

• 17

Good morning, MsP 😉

• Not only is there a third pole, its disappearance is going to threaten the lives of billions.

There is a third pole on earth, and it’s melting quickly

The Third Pole, because it is high above sea level, is also sensitive to changes in temperatures. It also powers life for many thousands of miles. It is estimated that the water that flows from the Third Pole supports 120 million people directly through irrigation systems, and a total of 1.3 billion indirectly through river basins in China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. That’s nearly one fifth of the world’s population.

Sorry, Hillary you have no idea what kids are like these days. they are not delicate little dears who are clutching their pearls. you might know that if you weren’t so busy helping to drone them in other countries and actually talked to one in the past decade for longer than needed to pose for a photo opt.

• MsPythia

As Huma said in those emails, $hillz is “often confused.”

• SpiffyTheValiant

Indeed. She actually thinks she’s a woman. She is not a woman. She is an android that happens to be asethetically designed to LOOK like a woman.

Of course the faux patriots are in a rage over an NFL player not standing for the anthem. Funny how a lot of them never served, and went to great pains to ensure that they would never serve the nation they claim to love so dearly. I served, and I have no problem with anyone not standing for the anthem as it is their right that I served to protect.

I stand with Colin Kapernick on this matter. Being an American means you can choose your own belief system, and aren’t beholding to any symbols just because others believe you should. Fuck you people. He’s a better American than all of you, he’s exercising his rights while you call him names, and insist that he not exercise those rights.

Hell, he’s not even the first high profile athlete to not stand for the anthem. Back in the 80’s in Detroit we had Chet Lemon, and Sweet Lou Whitaker that refused to stand for the anthem citing their JW faith. They caught a little flack for it, then it all blew over as the outrage machine wasn’t what it is today.

The flag represents genocidal land thieves, murderers, slavers, and all sorts of miscreants. A stolen land. I have a great use for this symbol of oppression.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Native Americans: Yay, finally some respect.

• SmotPoker

Poor bastards should have killed each, and every pale faced motherfucker on the first boats that arrived, and any that followed. Look for peace, prepare for war. They never saw it coming until it was too late. My heart bleeds for them. The American Holocaust that is conveniently forgotten when discussions of the greatness of America occur.

• SpiffyTheValiant

;/ yup

• SmotPoker

Think about it. Which is the greater evil. A single madman responsible for the death of 6 million Jews, or a government that passes the torch of hatred, and murder from one leader to the next while the blood is spilled across multiple generations, and the deaths reach an untold number?

To quote Arnold Horshack “Oooh! Oooh! Ooooh! I know! I know!”

• SpiffyTheValiant

Well it’s different when we do it *sarcasm*

• SmotPoker

Yeah, we do it to spread “Democracy”, and “Liberty”….

I read the new Tesla gets 300 mi per charge.

• RTIII

great, that means if you can do most of your business in a 75 mile radius, and if you can recharge after every trip, your batteries should last nearly forever.

• cathyx

My sister has a Tesla, and she gets 250 miles to the charge. She said if she paid more for a bigger battery, she would get 300 miles/charge.

• RTIII

How long does a recharge take from “empty”?

• cathyx

She said that at a Tesla super charge station it takes about 45 minutes. At her garage, with 50 amp 220 outlet, about 8 hours.

“Three US Allies Now Fighting Against Each Other in Northern Syria”

That’s been a recurring problem, but became dramatically moreso this past week, when US-backed Turkey invaded northern Syria, and brought with it a US-backed rebel bloc that includes part of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham. Within 24-hours, both quickly got into a fight with the Kurdish YPG, who is also US-backed, putting three US allies in direct conflict.

“f Clinton was You or Me, She’d “Be in Prison” — The Kaepernick Interview the Media is Ignoring”

When asked about whether or not the election year had anything to do with his choosing to remain seated for the national anthem, Kaepernick responded:

“It wasn’t a timing thing, it wasn’t something that was planned. But I think the two presidential candidates that we currently have also represent the issues that we have in this country right now.”

He then went on to shatter the paradigm of being forced into choosing the lesser of two evils by decrying both the political candidates, making the point that Hillary Clinton is a criminal.

“You have Hillary who has called black teens or black kids super predators, you have Donald Trump who’s openly racist. We have a presidential candidate who has deleted emails and done things illegally and is a presidential candidate. That doesn’t make sense to me because if that was any other person you’d be in prison. So, what is this country really standing for?”

Read more at http://thefreethoughtproject.com/clinton-kaepernick-interview-media/#1blzigU8cMCclfwl.99

• panem et circenses

Yeah, I read his statement somewhere then googled it, and the only “news” organizations reporting what he said are fringe blogs and right wing sites (who cut out his statement in the middle about Trump being a racist).

• smkngman3

I’m posting this because it includes a WP link which I had missed.

“WIKILEAKS PREPARES FOR RELEASE OF MORE CLINTON EMAILS AHEAD OF ELECTION”

http://anotherdayintheempire.com/2016/08/29/wikileaks-prepares-release-clinton-emails-ahead-election/

WP quote……………..

Jokes aside, it’s beyond ridiculous that one of the two people who will be elected president in 80 or so days continues to refuse to engage with the press in this way.

But she does sit-down interviews! And she did a “press conference” with a moderator, um, moderating the questions!

Not good enough. Not when you are running to be president of the United States. One of the most important things when someone is offering themselves up to represent all of us is that we get the best sense we can about how that person thinks on his or her feet, how they deal with unwanted or adversarial questions. Those two traits are big parts of doing the job of president in the modern world.

There’s nothing like a press conference to put a candidate for president through their paces. If you don’t believe me, just watch how Clinton handled this presser — not well! — when she tried to put the email server controversy to rest.

• MsPythia

That is so true.

• panem et circenses

I agree with them. It may be her best strategy yet. Every time she shows her face or opens her mouth public opinion of her drops.

• smkngman3

Best line……..

And she did a “press conference” with a moderator, um, moderating the questions!

• MsPythia

A sit down one at that. Maybe it’s not just that she can’t think on her feet, it’s that she can’t stand on her feet for any real length of time without taking a nose dive?

Another taxpayer funded study.

“Feds Spend $911,056 Studying the Drinking Habits of Lesbian Couples”

The researchers contend that no one has ever studied the relationships of lesbian couples and their drinking habits.

“Despite this awareness, no studies have examined how relationship factors and partners’ alcohol use contribute to hazardous drinking among female sexual minority couples,” the grant said.

Julian Assange exposes Hillary Clinton’s “Libya Tick Tock” email: A step-by-step guide to destroy Libya

The Clinton teams’ “brag sheet” of all the actions that Hillary took credit for as the architect of the US involvement in Libya.

Last week in an interview with Fox and friends, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange made a bold statement.

When asked what surprised him the most about Hillary Clinton’s thousands of emails, Assange said the “most interesting and serious” information on Hillary Clinton is yet to be released.

Assange then proceeded to nudge viewers towards the direction of an already released email thread call the “Libya Tick Tock”…a stream of emails which clearly certifies Hillary’s lead position in the Libyan disaster.

Pay no attention to how our polices create and support terrorism!

“Kerry: ‘Media Would Do Us All a Service If They Didn’t Cover’ Terrorism as Much”

“No country is immune from terrorism,” Kerry said at a press availability in Dhaka, Bangladesh. “It’s easy to terrorize. Government and law enforcement have to be correct 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. But if you decide one day you’re going to be a terrorist and you’re willing to kill yourself, you can go out and kill some people. You can make some noise. Perhaps the media would do us all a service if they didn’t cover it quite as much. People wouldn’t know what’s going on.”

I posted one last week when Karoli was getting all “mushroom cloud” and we’re going to have to “duck and cover”. No better than Condi Rice and the neocons.

Progressives??!! Pffft!! More like douchebags.

• Don’t be so sure Hillary won’t fuck with Putin to the point where he decides a “limited” exchange is just what the doctor ordered. I truly think Clinton has an itchy trigger finger. I know that the plutocratic class thinks that killing a few billion peons is a good idea.

• Edwin

I truly think Clinton is one of those people with die-hard faith America should (rightfully) rule the world (chosen people) and that goal eclipses everything else, not matter the cost in lives and $$. There’s a whole gang of them in Washington. (They are evil fuckers.)

Karoli and C&L seem to be on board as long as they get the Vaj in the White House.

Israeli Colonel Caught with IS Pants Down

This was definitely not supposed to happen. It seems that an Israeli military man with the rank of colonel was “caught with IS pants down.” By that I mean he was captured amid a gaggle of so-called IS–or Islamic State or ISIS or DAESH depending on your preference–terrorists, by soldiers of the Iraqi army. Under interrogation by the Iraqi intelligence he apparently said a lot regarding the role of Netanyahu’s IDF in supporting IS.

• MsPythia

There are products people can use these days to help with curly hair, and she could also have her hair straightened if nothing else worked for her. I just think she’s clueless.

• RTIII

She should shave it off and wear a wig.

• cathyx

If she cut it, that would make it much more manageable.

• MsPythia

No, I have curly hair too — and it’s actually better with some length, so it doesn’t frizz out completely. She’d look like Little Orphan Annie if she cut it short! But there are so many good products out there that would make her hair look so much better than it does, and it’s clear that no stylist is steering her to them!

• Edwin

Like Hillary is a mega-wealthy, but no one is steering her to the nice clothes.

Surely something can be done. She can cut off most of it.

• MsPythia

They’re making it sound like a woman having to campaign and speak to the press when running for the nation’s highest office is somehow a huge insult to her. It’s insane and pathetic. And in fact, they’re actually hurting feminism with this horseshit — not that they care, since Shillz has never actually been a feminist.

I think they have to spin this, because something is truly wrong with her. This is beyond just being bad at answering questions. There’s got to be a bigger reason she’s in hiding, since she did not do this when she ran in 2008.

• RTIII

I’m beginning to think she has serious health issues.

• Left of Eden

• MsPythia

• Edwin

Camp Clinton has done more damage to feminism this campaign than all the men in America have done for the last 200 years combined.

• Edwin

I think they are using it to antagonize people. They keep throwing this (fake) sexism in everyone’s face at every turn and hoping for a backlash. Then they can claim it’s the misogyny that was always there and that’s why Clinton had to bomb Iran.

The likes of Karoli will write articles about it.

• MsPythia

Yes — plus they’re using it the same way that they used the racist charge with Obama. The thing about whinging about things like this is that it really doesn’t get people off the hook for all criticism of their behavior and decisions once they’ve gained so much power and money the way that Obama and Hillary have. They’re both incredibly powerful people, so Obama doesn’t face what the average black man in America faces, and Hillary has never faced what the average woman does either, so it sounds incredibly weak and nonsensical that this is what they’re using all the time.

‘The Mother of All Risks’: Insurance Giants Call on G20 to Stop Bankrolling Fossil Fuels”

Multi-national insurance giants Aviva, Aegon, and Amlin, which together manage $1.2tn in assets, released a statement Tuesday calling on the leaders of the world’s biggest economies to commit to ending coal, oil, and gas subsidies within four years.

“Climate change in particular represents the mother of all risks—to business and to society as a whole. And that risk is magnified by the way in which fossil fuel subsidies distort the energy market,” said Aviva CEO Mark Wilson. “These subsidies are simply unsustainable.”

I guess they didn’t listen last year.

Mark Carney, the governor of the Bank of England, has warned that climate change will lead to financial crises and falling living standards unless the world’s leading countries do more to ensure that their companies come clean about their current and future carbon emissions.

In a speech to the insurance market Lloyd’s of London on Tuesday, Carney said insurers were heavily exposed to climate change risks and that time was running out to deal with global warming.

The Telecommunications Act Of 1996 gave us shitty cell service, expensive cable

When Congress passed the Telecommunications Act Of 1996, it didn’t seem like a big deal. An act that was meant to save consumers money on cable bills and phone service, the Telecom Act passed through Congress with flying colors, earning yea votes from 91 of the 100 senators, and about 95 percent of the House Of Representatives. And yet, 20 years later, the Telecom Act has led to all sorts of media bullshit..

• Left of Eden

No shit! My frigging internet bill just doubled from last year. On the phone with the pricks right now trying to talk them down some. It’s either ATT or TW, both pricks of the highest magnitude – high prices AND shitty customer service.

• kreskin

I don’t what’s with these ISPs , worst customer service in the world . We’ve a choice between Comcast or Frontier Communications here. Comcast customer service is better than Frontier’s , believe it or not . It’s all I can do to keep from going off on them when dealing with these people .

• The bad customer service is a deliberate psychological compliance tactic. See the “Door In The Face” technique. (among others)

(I tell people, over and over, but they won’t listen, our lives are now ruled by corporations pulling psychological compliance tactics on us.)

• Left of Eden

I have no doubt, but you are right.

• kreskin

In this case it’s a lack of intelligence , a lack of training and a completely dysfunctional system . . They’re not getting me to comply , I can tell you that . These reps couldn’t even tell you what a psychological compliance tactic is .

• They don’t have to know. They do it by rote and, think about it, if it was hurting their bottom line, why would they let it continue. Trust me, I have personal experience from the other end of it: such rude customer service actually decreases customer abandonment and reduces help center costs.

• Left of Eden

It can’t hurt the bottom line because one can’t do without the service, is faced with either a monopoly or a duopoly – and both choices equally suck by design!

• Left of Eden

That’s part of it – make dealing with customer relations so exasperating that one would sooner give up than get what he wants . I spent a good ten minutes just now breaking down my situation in great detail, repeating the relevant parts, and all to no avail. As the conversation proceeded, it was quite evident the assistant hadn’t processed a single word of what I had told her. Twenty minutes of my life wasted. She wasn’t able to answer my questions (even though they specifically related to her department), but at least I received a friendly “Thank you for being and ATT customer” at the conclusion of our call!

• towerofbabel

We’re listening.

Saudi Arabia and Israel can trust us.

• s k

Got WMD’s?…….It doesn’t matter who we are at war with as long as we are in a war.

• towerofbabel

The Kurds are resisting our dictatorship, Turkey, and killing our allies, ISIS. And probably hacking the DNC servers.

• Edwin

That might depend on where the Kurds are. Iraqi Kurds are good (freedom fighters) and Syrian Kurds (enemies of freedom) need to be slaughtered.

On Thursday at 9 a.m. PDT / 12 p.m. EDT, Truthdig Editor in Chief Robert Scheer and his team will sit down with the Green Party presidential candidate for a live conversation, streamed directly to our Facebook page.

A recent Truthdig poll found that a vast majority of readers preferred Stein over any other candidate, yet her national poll numbers remain in the single digits. As the countdown to Election Day grows smaller, we want to know: What makes Jill Stein qualified to be president of the United States?

We also want to hear from you, our readers: what do you want to ask Dr. Stein? Leave your questions in the comments below and they may be answered during our live session.

I just got a cavity from all the sweetness from this video. Darn you!

• RTIII

Of course, because it’s facebook, it doesn’t play for me, but it’s got a cute pic as the opening image! What’s the cat doing, rolling in chicks?!

• cathyx

RT, just join Facebook already.

• RTIII

kinda rude there, and presumptuous.

• cathyx

What is rude and presumptuous?

• SpiffyTheValiant

Is the cat being smothered to death by the peeps or enjoying it? I can’t tell.

• MsPythia

Looks pretty blissed out to me! 🙂

• SpiffyTheValiant

lol 🙂

• Here’s one for my fellow Fen:

• Left of Eden

Is that from Star Gate?

• notisaidthepig

Cool.

• Every time I jumped into that pool, I would find myself forced to make the “Skwoosh” sound that it makes on the show. LOL.

• MsPythia

How the Political Revolution Failed Tim Canova
Bernie Sanders never showed up, and former staffers at Our Revolution believe the organization’s 501(c)(4) status hurt Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s primary challenger.

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/08/canova-revolution-bernie-sanders-debbie-wasserman-schultz/497807/

I wonder who bought off Bernie? I hope he thinks it’s worth it, and hope all of the people who followed him now realize that “Our Revolution” is bogus bullshit, now that he helped Crooked Wasserman Shultz keep her seat.

• towerofbabel

Apparently Bernie love him some Debbie.

• s k

and Patrick Murphy

• RTIII

I bet he was threatened, not bought off.

• I think neither.

• MsPythia

Revolutionaries aren’t afraid to take risks. They die for their beliefs.

• RTIII

family

• MsPythia

So someone threatens to kill your family so the best thing to do is just cave in to them? That’s not how revolutionaries think — although they might send their family somewhere else. It also doesn’t explain why he has set up a bogus organization that asks people for money, but has been legally set up so that it cannot ever organize for any progressive political challengers to incumbents.
In fact, at this point, Bernie and Our Revolution doesn’t make one fucking bit of sense, and it’s an insult to our intelligence.

• s k

I would have had some respect for him if just went home and kept his mouth shut

• MsPythia

Me too.

• RTIII

I don’t agree that “revolutionaries” all have the same thinking patterns; everyone’s an individual and respond to threats differently. He may have been naive in thinking he wouldn’t be threatened and when the day finally came, he gave it up.

Also, if he was not a revolutionary and was only interested in sheep-dogging us, he did a crappy job because now we’re all fired up!

I’m thinking that he has some bizarre idea that he / we can reform the Democratic Party – before this primary, I thought we could! – but given his personal experience in the primary, I find that if I were him I could not have any faith in the D party. … That said, it’s STILL true that ONLY someone acting as a D could have gotten the media attention he did in fact get – look what they’re doing to Jill Stein, for example.

However, I’m curious about your remark: “…has been legally set up so that it cannot ever organize for any progressive political challengers to incumbents.” Can you please explain that one? I know it’s a (c)4, but am not familiar with the restrictions you’re talking about.

Can you please explain that one?

• MsPythia

501(c)4’s are social welfare organizations, and they can lobby for legislation, but are not allowed to coordinate with anyone running for office.

The promotion of social welfare does not include direct or indirect participation or intervention in political campaigns on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. However, a section 501(c)(4) social welfare organization may engage in some political activities, so long as that is not its primary activity.

link:
https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/other-non-profits/social-welfare-organizations

Basically Our Revolution can collect a bunch of lobbying money, and talk about a bunch of vague political goals, but they cannot work directly to change the system by getting specific candidates elected to office. WORTHLESS.

• notisaidthepig

Yep.

• s k

Total bs for BS

• RTIII

Thanks, and I agree that it’s not at all what’s needed – AND an insult to our intelligence.

• notisaidthepig

I’m tired of this excuse.

• notisaidthepig

It is indeed “bogus bullshit.” I do think lots of people are moving beyond Bernie. I’m all for supporting progressive candidates but what does it say that Bernie himself isn’t doing that? Very sad. But Bernie is in the rear view mirror as far as I’m concerned so whatever. I can’t imagine how Canova must feel.

• SpiffyTheValiant

I have a pic of Canova’s reaction.

• notisaidthepig

Really? Please post.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Refresh. It’s a picture..;)

• notisaidthepig

• SpiffyTheValiant

yup.

• MsPythia
• notisaidthepig

I’ve had to stand up to salute the flag this week. It’s been 16 years since I had to do that. Felt a bit weird.

• cathyx

You should have made a statement and stayed seated.

• notisaidthepig

Oh, I’m not opposed to saluting the flag. Just felt odd after not doing it for so long.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Spiffy always thought it was stupid, long before she even knew why we were supposedly doing it. It was not stupid enough for her to make an issue of it. But she was like meh -_- well there goes 30 seconds of my life…

• notisaidthepig

I’ve got this interesting background, right? I was born in the second world but grew up in the first (and have lived most of my adult life in the third!). It influences me in weird ways sometimes.

• SpiffyTheValiant

<3 well of course pig's background is interesting. he is an interesting pig.

• notisaidthepig

Aww. You are so lovely. So Spiffy!

• SpiffyTheValiant

🙂

• Edwin

I am. I think flags are stupid.

It’s weird for me to go into the gym for a school assembly in Korea and see all the “patriotism”, hear the anthem booming, see the flag worship, the “beaming pride”. (Makes me kinda sick. It’s sorta creepy.)

• notisaidthepig

Like everything, I think, it’s a question of degree. I don’t really see anything wrong with being proud of your country.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Kinda waiting for it to give me something to be proud of besides the Moon landing at this point.

• notisaidthepig

Now, now. As Americans, we can be proud of more than that. Right?

• SpiffyTheValiant

>.> <,< *stretches. stretches.* WWII. but we only got involved after Pearl Harbor. Well we has the internet too.

• notisaidthepig

Two excellent examples!

• SpiffyTheValiant

The whole being founded on slavery and genocide thing while the Founding Fathers talked about all men being created equal thing, is kinda hard to get past though.

• notisaidthepig

We live in the real world and purity tests don’t really work. America is hardly perfect. Far from it! However, for me, as a person who has traveled the globe a bit, I think it’s a pretty good place to live. Or it was? (Canada is nice too!)

• SpiffyTheValiant

<3 pig is a lot nicer than me. just be careful with that purity test phrase. Hillarybots throw that one out. You are definitely not a hillarybot.

• notisaidthepig

Not a Hillarybot!

• SpiffyTheValiant

• s k

What grade(s) are you teaching?

• notisaidthepig

Only grade 8 this year! It’s like a treat. The last few years I was teaching 8, 10, 11, 12. So much planning when you have to teach several grades! I can already tell I will have much less planning this year.

• s k

Good, good for you.

• Edwin

I don’t like how it divides us and gives us false feelings of superiority over other people. I think it us unnecessary; time to move beyond.

• notisaidthepig

But it can also unite us and help to build a sense of community. Right?

• Edwin

I think there are other ways to do it.

Nationalism is VERY strong in Korea. They learn it in school from an early age: Korea is best, everything Korean is wonderful: we are better than other people. They learn they are pure, unlike other (mongrel) nations: One blood, One people. It’s because the bloodlines here are mostly “pure Korean,” whatever tha means because there is also Chinese, Mongolian and Japanese blood, but Koreans will deny that and say they are pure.

Icky, no?

• SpiffyTheValiant

You are talking about South Korea right?

• Edwin

yes

I’m sure it’s much worse in N Korea

• SpiffyTheValiant

Wow. I knew that stuff happened in N, but not in S.

• Edwin

When you see it up close in other countries, it tweaks your own brainwashing back home. Yup. I see what they did to us.

• notisaidthepig

Yes, that does sound icky. But it’s an example of the extreme. Never good IMO.

• Edwin

Similar in a lot of Asia. Same in Japan, etc. (special people)

• notisaidthepig

Not just Asia. But I’m sticking to my point. Oink!

• SpiffyTheValiant

Holy shit that means Korea is in Slytherin!

• Dosido3

There are definitely some advantages…someone asked me recently why our schools are so behind other countries…well, so many reasons, but one is teaching to a classroom of kindergarteners who represent 37 different native languages.

• Edwin

I am homophobic. I daren’t look in the mirror.

• s k

LOL

• notisaidthepig

It’s gotten beyond ridiculous. I hope they keep it up. Folks are noticing, methinks, and it will work against her.

• Edwin

You only say that because you are sexist. (See other Jimmy video I posted today.)

• notisaidthepig

There’s so much wrong with me. Sigh.

• Edwin

Yup. Me too. Started this election with high hopes. All I learned was I am a total crud: woman-hating, homophobic, racismisogynist.

• notisaidthepig

Good afternoon.

• Edwin

Howdy, Pig. 😀

• notisaidthepig

A little tired but otherwise good. Thanks. How are you?

• cathyx

Long day at the office on your first day?

• notisaidthepig

Yesterday I had a good day….until my last class. There were just too many of them (39) and I had all this paperwork to do because we are a Title 1 school that MUST get done the very first day (attendance is super critical). It was a bit chaotic and not a good way to end the day. Thankfully, today I had time to actually discipline and it was much improved. Tomorrow will be even better. But after a few months of not working, being back in a public school was exhausting!

• cathyx

I start back tomorrow. But actual class time starts Sept 6th.

• Edwin

Good thanks. It’s freezing over here today… and rainy. “Indian Summer” begins tomorro (mid-70s temps).

• notisaidthepig

Weren’t you sweating up a storm just the other day?

• Edwin

It went from 5 weeks of 100*+ with humidex down to 60* the other day. I am loving it!!

• notisaidthepig

Enjoy!

• Edwin

I am enjoying it. Hot showers, blankets, cool dry breeze, etc.

• notisaidthepig

I’m looking forward to the dip in heat here in Vegas but I think we still have a good month to go before that happens.

• Edwin

but the humidity (OK, shutting up now) 😀

(really, that was what was killing us)

• MsPythia

Piggie! How is school so far? <3

• notisaidthepig

Hi, MsP! See below. <3

• MsPythia

Saw it. 🙂 I hope you’re day is smooth sailing all the way tomorrow!

• notisaidthepig

Oh, I’ve already talked to one parent. These kids don’t know who they are tangling with! 😉

• MsPythia

😀 Stern Piggie?

• notisaidthepig

I don’t really yell but I do get stern. Oink!

• Dosido3

Yeah. I like that one too…

• I’ve got this ridiculously large images folder, so I should probably share some. 😉

• SpiffyTheValiant

A ridiculously large image folder, you say. So is that what the kids are calling it these days?

• 😛

• SpiffyTheValiant

You gave me the opening. I just took it.

• notisaidthepig

LOL!

• SpiffyTheValiant

“ridiculously large” :))

• MsPythia
• SpiffyTheValiant

lol

• I am now going to call my images folder a “Schwannstucker.” Forever.

• MsPythia

Yay! 😀

• Some people own big trucks…

• RTIII

So, it’s linux – I could get Windows to show it as properties too as it’s served on a Samba share, but that’d take too long, so I used “du” for my images…

So, I “cd”ed into the correct top level directory and it went like this:

$ du -Shcs Images
8.0k Images
515G total

Took many minutes to run, too!
The options mean:
S – don’t include subdirectories, only their contents (that is only count actual files not disk structure)
h – human readable (hence the G)
c – produce a grand total
s – sumarize – display only a total for each argument

• RTIII

I bet I have maybe 20G just on the aftermath of hurricane Katrina alone!

• RTIII

Just for fun, I ran the same command over my Video directory tree…

810G

…Lots of movies…

• Yep, no need for an explanation of the flags (for me, at least,) I run Linux.

I just happened to be in my Windows VM, when I thought to grab that image.

• RTIII

Yeah, “porn collection” is too … um … obvious!

• SpiffyTheValiant

:))

• notisaidthepig

These were Halloween costumes for me and my brother years and years ago. Everyone loved it! (It was my idea.)

• That’s a totally sweet costume idea!

• notisaidthepig

Nearly everyone recognized it. It was so cool.

• It’s definitely a super-nerd reference, especially in a political context.

• notisaidthepig

It’s been so long since we did it. Something like 25 years. It might be worth doing again! Especially because, as you so rightly pointed out, it hits the political context of our current time right on the head.

• notisaidthepig

Translating is NOT easy.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Yeah. I”m not sure if they actually are that fluent or just paste it in google translate and try to read between the lines.

• notisaidthepig

Something to consider for sure.

• SpiffyTheValiant

yup. Had one reviewer from Brazil. She could apparently read English or at least use some sort of translate, but all her reviews were in Portguese.

So I was like, oh boy. I have to translate this. Hopefully, it’s not a troll using another language to get past the filter.

They’ve never had any shame over their corruption at all. I think they like rubbing it in everyone’s faces.

• notisaidthepig

I’d have to agree. It’s so egregious. They are reveling in the fact that they have stolen the primaries from us and are, no doubt, going to steal the general.

• MsPythia

I really think of this whole campaign year as a coup by the Clinton’s. I do think this whole thing was set up for them by the 1%, and that the media has been in on it from the beginning.

• Blue Basilisk

I think a lot of people still believe that hobknobbing with the rich will eventually make them rich too and they think they’re looking out for their own future interests.

I posted this earlier

On Thursday at 9 a.m. PDT/12 p.m.

We also want to hear from you, our readers: What do you want to ask Jill Stein? Leave your questions in the comments below and they may be answered during our live session. http://www.truthdig.com/avbooth/item/live_at_truthdig_what_makes_jill_stein_qualified_to_be_president_of_the_uni

• notisaidthepig

I just hear Tim Canova lost. Is that right? 🙁

• MsPythia

Did he really lose or did he “lose”? Who knows. Maybe that corrupt bitch rigged this for herself too.
Bernie sold him out as well.

• notisaidthepig

That’s what I’m thinking too. There’s no way we can trust the integrity of ANY election now. Amirite?

• MsPythia

Yup. This is why Bernie’s political revolution was a waste. We need a real revolution because we don’t have a democracy or fair elections.

• 17

Told ya. Many, many times. Nobody ever listens to me.

• RTIII

I don’t agree; it wasn’t a waste at all!

It was the right idea, we just had a leader who couldn’t carry through.

OK, so he’s in the rear view mirror now – I don’t see any reason to talk about Bernie at this point unless it pertains to Senate business somehow…

What we need to focus on is how we’re going to harness this energy and don’t lose it! I’m thinking that this is the time to begin full-on support of the Green Party at EVERY TURN!

• SpiffyTheValiant

Apparently that section of Florida went to Hillary by 68 points. So he probably lost lost.

• MsPythia

But we don’t know if HIllary really won either. Because our elections are rigged.

• SpiffyTheValiant

68% is quite big. Maybe she didn’t actually win by that much, but at that point, you just have to admit there are a lot of dumbfuckers down there.

• MsPythia

I don’t think that the woman that this nation already rejected in 08, and who couldn’t fill a school gymnasium won this primary. And her winning by that much doesn’t mean anything to me because I read this:
https://www.facebook.com/notes/election-justice-usa/democracy-lost-a-report-on-the-fatally-flawed-2016-democratic-primaries/923891901070837/

• SpiffyTheValiant

Well rigged or won, the bitch just held onto her seat.

• MsPythia

Right. After it was proved that she criminally rigged the primary for Hillary. And after her constituents have been screaming in the editorial pages for years now that she’s corrupt. I don’t believe it. I don’t believe in our election process.

• RTIII

This is the single biggest reason I have changed from merely not liking hillary to hating her; she refused to call it out.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Oh I have a lot of reasons to hate Hillary. At this point, if my hatred could be harnessed into an energy source, the entire fucking planet would have 100% renewable energy and the aliens could take the extra.

• MsPythia

Me too. She’s a monster.

• SpiffyTheValiant

indeeds.

• RTIII

I don’t hate very easily… Takes a LOT!

• SpiffyTheValiant

I do. I know that I shouldn’t give into it so easily. But I just have a low tolerance.

• MsPythia

I hate corrupt people of the American aristocracy. I always have. I think it’s easy for me to hate them because I grew up in Princeton NJ surrounded by old money people as a middle class kid. I’ve hated these motherfuckers my entire life.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Spiffy does not know the origins of her hatred for these people exactly. But supposes it can easily be explained by the old quote.

All that is required for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing. (Well women too, but it’s a really old quote and that’s just how they referred to everyone back then.)

• MsPythia

Some people are just born with class consciousness and a distaste for injustice. <3

The woman had to resign in disgrace and still wins. Bet you she could kill a puppy on tv and the machine would have still propped her.

• MsPythia

They did prop her. Obama, Biden, Hillary, Warren, and the rest of Congress propped her up. We’re dealing with a bunch of criminals here.

• SpiffyTheValiant

^&$#%@^@#$ Warren.

I demand a DNA test. I sense Benedict Arnold is in that family tree.

• MsPythia

It’s the statistical stuff that’s so well done. They had some of the best statisticians in this nation working on that study.

• s k

The Democrats knew our elections were rigged and yet when they had the house and senate they chose not to nationalize our elections. They are just as corrupt as the GOP

• MsPythia

They’re even worse than the GOP now. At least the GOP is honest and upfront in their awfulness. The Democrats are a bunch of liars, who dupe stupid people with fake progressive rhetoric when they really hold the exact same elitist, bigoted, racist views as the Republican Party.
I’m glad that at least I am now awake, and am standing with the Green Party. It’s the only logical place where anyone who supported the political revolution can go — and it’s so clear now that if we want fair elections, we need an actual revolution.

• s k

Yup, I have been the defending the Democrats since Carter, I am done with them.

“DONALD DUCK CARTOON FROM 1959 TEACHES SACRED GEOMETRY”

These include sacred geometry and devil worshipping. Considering the many subliminal messages hidden in Disney movies and cartoons in general, this aspect of the video is sure to raise more questions than it answers.

Perhaps the most obvious and perplexing subliminal message hidden in a Disney cartoon, featured in Ducktales, are the words, “Ask about Illuminati” written on the wall in the background of the scene. What can we make of this? Was Disney himself trying to tell us something, or was this the work of a sneaky cartoonist? We may never learn the answer.

“Charges filed to fire 5 officers in Chicago police shooting”

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson has filed formal administrative charges to fire the officer who fatally shot black teenager Laquan McDonald in 2014.

Johnson filed charges Tuesday to fire Officer Jason Van Dyke along with four other officers who were at the scene of the shooting.

The filing was expected after Johnson announced two weeks ago that seven officers involved in the shooting should be fired. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said one of those officers resigned the day Johnson made his announcement and another quit Tuesday.

Johnson has said he wants the officers fired for making false reports.

Of course this does NOT give “justice” to or for Laquan McDonald, but at least it’s some TINY bit of nod in that direction…

• smkngman3

Some were fired because they gave false statements.

This should be standard procedure. Lie in your reports, you are GONE!

• RTIII

Agreed; why any lying is permitted is beyond me, but I’ve seen it so often, by a great many different cops, even for petty stuff like speeding tickets where it wouldn’t have mattered if they told the truth or lie that I get the idea that cops lie ALL THE DAMNED TIME.

CHICAGO — August 2016 is now one of the deadliest months in Chicago’s recent history.

By the Chicago Tribune’s count, there have been at least 78 homicides, with two days left to go in the month. That’s the highest number since October 1997, nearly two decades ago, when there were 79 homicides.

Just this past weekend, 67 people were shot, 11 fatally. Among the dead was Nykea Aldridge, a cousin of Chicago Bull Dwyane Wade.

More than 400 people have been shot in August, more than 2,800 people so far this year.

A New Low in US Presidential Politics: The Anointment of Hillary, the Neocon “War Goddess”

Anointing her by electoral rigging to lead one wing of America’s duopoly system reveals the deplorable state of the nation – tyranny posing as democracy.

A new low in presidential politics was reached with a candidate representing Washington’s lunatic fringe, a neocon war goddess drooling for endless conflicts.

If elected, Hillary risks committing greater high crimes of state than her predecessors, including possible nuclear war – why it’s crucial to defeat her in November. Humanity’s fate hangs in the balance.

Her Thursday night acceptance speech was what you’d expect – featuring rambling lofty rhetoric, dreary and dull pontificating, empty promises, an unprincipled display of dishonesty.

Claiming “economic and social justice issues (are) front and center where they belong” on her agenda belies her record as a corrupt lawyer, first lady, US senator, secretary of state and influence-peddler to the highest bidders through the Clinton Foundation, for self-aggrandizement and wealth enrichment.

Hillary represents a new low in US politics, featuring unrestrained imperial lawlessness, endless wars of aggression, risking WW III by confronting nonexistent Sino/Russian threats, serving monied and warmongering interests exclusively, along with ignoring the welfare and concerns of ordinary people.

Defeating her presidential ambitions tops all other priorities for people everywhere.

“State: Benghazi emails involving Clinton recovered by FBI”

The State Department says about 30 emails that may be related to the 2012 attack on U.S. compounds in Benghazi, Libya, are among the thousands of Hillary Clinton emails recovered during the FBI’s recently closed investigation into her use of a private server.

Government lawyers told U.S. District Court Judge Amit P. Mehta Tuesday that an undetermined number of the emails among the 30 were not included in the 55,000 pages previously provided by Clinton. The State Department’s lawyer said it would need until the end of September to review the emails and redact potentially classified information before they are released.

Mehta questioned why it would take so long to release so few documents, and urged that the process be sped up. He ordered the department to report to him in a week with more details about why the review process would take a full month.

‘Game-changer for patients’: Scientists grow liver able to replicate natural functions”

American scientists have grown a liver which can manage the closest ever set of processes to that of a real human one. The lab-grown organ has the potential to be a “game-changer” for patients suffering from liver diseases, they said.

Scientists at a The Saban Research Institute of the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles created the liver with the help of both people and mice, the study published in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine on Tuesday said.

“Israel’s ‘only real existential threat’ is potential civil war – fmr Mossad chief”

To aid the state of society Pardo called for a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying without it “we will never be able to achieve normalization with our Arab neighbors.”

“The prime minister has said there will be two states between the [Mediterranean] Sea and the [River] Jordan and he’s right,” Pardo said. “In my opinion, we won’t be able to reach any agreement with any country beyond what we have now if we don’t solve the Palestinian issue.”

As far as internal Jewish societal disagreements, the former Mossad chief said that some people in Israel sought the intensity of the existing division.

“There are some for whom it’s comfortable to emphasize that which divides and not that which unites. I can’t put my finger on a group or a leader. It exists within all the country’s groups.”

“Environmental Group Backs Republican Florida Congressman In New Ad”

This is not the case for Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), who is facing a tight reelection race but has emerged as one of the House’s most outspoken advocates of climate action. Curbelo recently became the first Republican in the 2016 campaign cycle to be supported by EDF Action — the political arm of the Environmental Defense Fund.

After accidentally listening to a few minutes of MSNBC, it occurred to me that Russia is the new “outside agitator” for the media, in the same way cops and politicians like to point to people outside “their” communities agitating the natives into protesting injustice.

The US is a world-dominating empire, and even if the threat of Russia meddling in our elections and public opinions weren’t just a spook to misdirect the public, as part of the world that’s effected by everything the US does, they have every right to do so.

The more damning point isn’t made: That Hillary doesn’t have any positions that support BLM to point to.

In this morning’s email in-box was this from “PeaceTeam.net”:

Dear RTIII,

In the wake of the Democratic convention we did a poll of all our participants, and about 52% of our people indicated they supported Hillary Clinton for president.

So what’s the reason why every one of our Hillary supporters has not already requested one of our free “She’s For Us” bumper stickers? All you have to do to get one is send us an email with your mailing address and confirm what sticker you want, and out it goes with not even a mailing charge. So why not?

—-

How about because either:

1) you were lied to by “correct the record”? Or;

2) her support is just about zero? Or;

3) your poll is stale already and more people are “just not that into her?” Or;

4) all of the above?

… I’m going with 4.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Lol well done <3

They deserved that. 52% is not exactly a landslide either and their tone was just stupid. How are they defining "support?" Probably that the voters will take Clinton over Trump. Doesn't necessarily mean they like her, let alone enough to put a bumpersticker on their car. Just means they at least hate her slightly less than Trump.

• MsPythia

5. Voting for Jill Stein! 😀

• In the wake of the Democratic convention we did a poll of all our participants, and about 52% of our people indicated they supported Hillary Clinton for president.

The answer is: SOCIAL PROOF
“Laugh tracks on comedy shows exist for this very reason,” Cialdini says.

Experiment conducted:

Cialdini and a team of colleagues ran a soon-to-be published experiment to see which types of
signs would most encourage Arizona hotel visitors to reuse towels. They tested four types of
signs:
– #1 Cited environmental reasons to encourage visitors to reuse their towels
– #2 Said the hotel would donate a portion of end-of-year laundry savings to an environmental
cause
– #3 Said the hotel had already given a donation and asked: “Will you please join us?”
– #4 Said the majority of guests reused their towels at least once during their stay
Percentage of those who reused towels per request:
– Sign #1: 38%
– Sign #2: 36%
– Sign #3: 46%
– Sign #4: 48%
When guests found out that most people who stayed in the same hotel reused their towels, they
were more likely to comply with the request.
“What’s most interesting to me,” Cialdini says, “is that the most effective strategy was entirely
costless to the hotel. But I’ve never seen it used by any hotel room in any city.”

That was a while ago, you’ll now commonly find this tactic used in hotels.

• RTIII

So… Is the 52% a made up number?! (likely!)

• Quite possibly. The point isn’t the number, it’s the “other people” part. Because, quite factually, if all our friends jumped off a bridge, we’d be quite likely too, as well. That’s the strength of social proof.

Oh how surprising that Shillz has no coattails for any other Democrat to ride in on! Who could ever have guessed that rigging the “nomination” of the woman with a shit ton of horrible baggage, who could hardly fill a high school auditorium, and who hasn’t given a press conference in 270 days out of fear, or because she can’t stand up without help to steady her was really not a wonderful idea?!

• SpiffyTheValiant

They had to run Trump against her, otherwise even the Democrat Machine couldn’t have propped her.

• MsPythia

Seriously. She’s just barely more popular than Clownald Trump now!

• SpiffyTheValiant

And that’s after outspending him 40 to 1.

• MsPythia

This campaign season has been amazing! He says despicable, racist, stupid shit all the time, and we’ve learned about all the despicable, corrupt, dishonest shit that Hillary and the DNC has pulled all the time.

They are both not eligible to be the leaders of this country.

I think we should push for a law that says if either candidate cannot get X percentage of the general vote, there’s a do-over. Or something. This is absolutely awful.

• RTIII

“But in a likely effort to stop the slide even further, Clinton will dispatch Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to campaign for her over the final two months of the campaign.”

Well, to stop the slide and, likely, for two other reasons:

1) She’s not in good enough health (her brain sucks), and;

2) The more people see of her the more they hate her.

• MsPythia

3. More Wikileaks revelations that she’s a fucking monster!

• SpiffyTheValiant

Doesn’t matter. She has a D by her name, she’s a woman, and not Donald Trump. So that means she could eat a newborn puppy ALIVE on national tv and the “loyal Democrats” would still vote for her.

• MsPythia

Truth. They’d make excuses for her chowing down on puppy kebabs, just like they’re now fans of TPP and Fracking, and endangering national security, and making corrupt pay to play deals the main focus of her job as Sec. of State.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Oh she’s not really supporting the tpp or fracking. That’s a lie. You know.. she was just supporting Obama’s position because she was Sec of State and had to support her boss and fracking she’s against. She has all these tough regulations – Hillary fan.

• MsPythia

And then when they learn she won’t take any positions contrary to the people who bought her, there will be a new batch of excuses. Just like these idiots have done with Obama. They lack principles, all they’ve got is party loyalty. They’re like mindlessly cheering sports fans.

• SpiffyTheValiant

No matter what she does or doesn’t do, they will all chant, “WELL AT LEAST SHE’S NOT TRUMP.”

• SpiffyTheValiant

i like how they phrased it. She will dispatch them. Like she’s either going to kill them (in the old days they’d say dispatch to mean get rid of someone) or she’s their boss.

Yay, my first Halloween catalog for Oriental Trading came in the mail the other day, summer’s almost over! 😀 Which means soon I’ll have to dig into storage and see what I have/don’t have. The planning for the trailer park rugrats’ Halloween will commence soon! 😛

(Another sign Halloween is coming and summer’s almost over: Mom was talking to an ex-tenant who recently left the park because of I guess domestic violence issues and she told her to bring her girls’ over Halloween night so they can collect some goodies. When they first moved here two years ago the elder daughter was, and is still super-timid, she was watching the other park kids come over to our trailer forlornly…I/we had to call her over to tell it was ok to come get some herself.)

Something new I’ve learned from the catalog, advocates for kids with allergies are trying to promote teal-colored pumpkins as a way to signal that a house has non-food treats to offer. I’d get one from the catalog but I’m not sure how relevant it is here. I don’t anyone here would recognize what a teal pumpkin means, and as far as I’m aware we don’t have the high prevalence of food allergies that other communities have, and if we do, a lot of us come from backgrounds that encourage toughing things out…

• SpiffyTheValiant

I consider myself an expert on Halloween and have never heard of this teal pumpkin thingie. But yay for Halloween 🙂

• Edwin

Any house with a teal pumpkin gets soaped. Bah!!

(what is this world coming to?)

• Annaleigh

What’s going on is for some strange reason the rate of little kids with allergies (especially nut allergies) seems to be skyrocketing to the point that there are controversies, between parents of allergy kids vs. parents of non-allergy kids over whether schools should be allowed to ban peanut butter sandwiches in the cafeteria for the sake of the allergy kids, controversies over what people give out at Halloween, birthday parties, etc. I already give out a lot of stickers, party favors, etc. along with the candy because I want to, not because I’ve had any allergy kids thus far, so accommodating a child wouldn’t be an issue for me, but other people are actually arguing about this stuff. And then there are people like this one mommy blogger who admits that she lies about Little Timmy being allergic to gluten so that people will accommodate the diet she’s chosen for him (ugh).

I have no idea why so many little kids today are allergic to things. I actually wish I knew.

• Edwin

I hate modern day parents. I really do (buncha d-bags.)

Before we were born our mothers drank and smoked. Then they pushed us out into the streets to play unsupervised. On Halloween we were sent scurrying door to door to get all the treats we could. Poison, pins and razor blades were just part of the fun. No one had food allergies and if they did we told them to stop whining. Everyone had a good time and we loved it!!!

• SpiffyTheValiant

😛 Amazing that you made it to adulthood.

• Edwin

Yeah, and without all the food allergies or being lactose intolerant, etc.

I mean the odd person might be, but rare. In all my years growing up we never heard of such things.

• SpiffyTheValiant

The lactose thing is partially because people were moved onto regular milk too soon i think.

• Edwin

Someone posted something recently about what they do to milk now. Maybe cathyx? I forget what exactly, but it extends the shelf life (IIRC).

• Edwin

Processed food was a new thing when I was growing up. Most families ate real food, or foods that had not been tampered with in factories. Even fast food was new. Sure we had lots of junk food available, but nothing like today.

We had TV dinners and TV tables. 😀

• You’re not alone. Growing up for me (call it 66-85) I never knew a single child, out of hundreds, who had any sort of food allergy.

• Edwin

And if they did we probably made them sit in the corner with a dunce cap because that’s how we rolled back in the day.

• Nah, we probably trusted that they would be responsible enough to ensure they protected themselves. But being responsible is something (the now) global consumer-culture will have none of, in children or adults, because it lower sales.

Growing up 1960~2016… to be continued

Now I’m one of those annoying people who has to request no peanuts in anything. And if I want peanutty style treats, I have to make them with Almond or Cashew butter.

• Edwin

About all the food “allergies” and stuff. I think processed food has thrown people’s bodies out of whack, big big time. They really mess with the food people eat day in and day out. Gotta have an effect.

I saw recently that it takes 45 chemicals to make artificial strawberry flavour. Yum!

Fuck!

• MsPythia

So here’s the latest shit the Shillbots are pulling:
On Bernie Facebook Pages there is someone called Talia Fuentes claiming she’s a Berniecrat who won in Arizona yesterday.

But on July 29th she was gushing over Clinton:
https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14199134_10157444498815118_1634288679416175291_n.jpg?oh=405ce7e5ee888f54587cefe6485ffdc9&oe=588601B7

And on the same day expressed hatred for Bernie or Bust folks and called them “smug”

https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14141555_10153862677747654_4271416917958280731_n.jpg?oh=5dd2aeab27b1dba752ba2b83419651a1&oe=5881208F

It looks like it wasn’t enough that Bernie’s supporters were defrauded out of their money and time during the primary, now the Shillbots want to defraud Berners some more out of their money by pretending now that they are “Berniecrats.”

• SpiffyTheValiant

I don’t like human emotion in any form. We must work within the system. Assimilate. Resistance is futile. = Talia.

• Left of Eden

Yeah, and she didn’t even make proper use of the apostrophe, which comes after the s in “busters.”

Lmao!

• SpiffyTheValiant

I went to her facebook page. Only 900 something likes. I didn’t see that post. But I do hope that you tell her off for me.

She has an adorable picture of her and her son dressed up like Harry Potter. Which I resent since it makes me feel guilty for loathing her guts.

• MsPythia

She’s posting my last link on a whole bunch of the Bernie Groups on Facebook, trying to get money for her campaign. Total fraud, and it didn’t take long for people to start finding the truth about her.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Looked at Bernie’s facebook page. In the comments, there are a whole lot of GMO whores.

Apparently Bernie doesn’t believe in science because he wants GMO’s labeled.

GMOS are completely safe according to them. They are so safe, that they don’t want them labeled. Even if they are safe, they should be labeled. Apples are safe to eat, but that doesn’t mean I should be forced to buy something with apples in it, if I don’t want it in that. Merely because the product labeler didn’t want said appleness to make me not want to buy it.

• MsPythia

The CTR trolls seem to be crawling all over Bernie’s pages these days. I guess he’s fine with that. 🙁

• SpiffyTheValiant

Well I mean is there something he could really do about random people commenting? He posted an article about believing in the science in climate change and for some reason, the idiotic commenters started whoring themselves out for GMOs.

They can go eat all the GMOS they want. For people who don’t want to eat them, the companies that produce them have no right to force people to eat the products unknowingly. I guess they really don’t believe in capitalism after all 😉 So much for the free market.

• MsPythia

Well, when the primary was going on those kinds of things would be automatically removed on his FB pages. Now that he endorsed Clinton, and let her win the rigged nomination that kind of crap is allowed to stay up rather than be removed by the administrators of his pages. It’s depressing.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Do you think that Bernie might just be licking his wounds and like -_- meh fuck it. Too much stupidity to delete.

• MsPythia

Maybe. Or the people who work for him. Sad.

• Edwin

I still don’t know what to think about Bernie.

• MsPythia

Me either. He went from someone who sounded like he always did, and knew exactly what he was doing, to someone I don’t really recognize at all.

• Edwin

I run different theories through my mind but none of them satisfies me (not yet, anyway.)

• Dosido3

Maybe it’s the gun to his head.

• More like the rationalizations in his head. 🙁

• SpiffyTheValiant

I think he’s retreated.

• Edwin

What was it all about?

• RTIII

You should have known LONG before now: no such thing as a “free market.”

• Left of Eden

The safety or non-safety issue of GMO’s, while certainly of paramount concern, completely misses the point in terms of labeling, which is the right of consumers to make informed choice. Those in favor of the new law deliberately address the former issue while ignoring the latter.

• Edwin

For me it goes further than that. GMOs means mono-culture farming, giant corporate agribusiness, and wide use of pesticides and fertilizer derived from oil. It’s more than just what we eat, it’s our planet and how we live.

• Left of Eden

I’m only addressing labeling here. Of course it is a bad idea to have a handful of evil pricks holding the patents to the world food supply, to say nothing of the ecological impact it would and is having. The ends they have are nefarious and I wholeheartedly oppose them.

• Edwin

So if it’s on the label we know not just what we are eating but also what we are supporting.

• Left of Eden

I see what you mean now. Good point.

• Edwin

As you know, I am documentaries man. All the problems are united. Capitalism–>agribusiness/Monsanto–>fertilizer/pesticides–>oil industry–>polluted water supplies–.polluted oceans–>fish die off–>global warming–>etc

• GMO only means that, in any remote sense, because they are, for all practical purposes, completely un-regulated and controlled by one of the slimiest corporate interests in the US today.

There’s nothing about genetic modification of organisms that inherently involves skullfuckery. It is, in fact, true, that, given the inevitability of of what climate change is doing to our ability to raise crops, the only practical solution to feeding the human race in the future.

And that’s all the more reason we need to take them out of the hands of for-profit corporations who are incentivized to cut corners, lie and cheat any lesser regulation process than total regulation in the public interest.

• SpiffyTheValiant

Exactly what I said in a more fancy way. Yeps.

• Edwin

D-bag and probably CTR. Failed English, too. Two thumbs down.

The latest propaganda email from “Our Spinning Of Wheels*:”

…Out of the five progressive primary campaigns we supported, three were victorious. But we did lose one, a big one, in Florida: Tim Canova against Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

WTF?! They didn’t try to help Tim very much – only BEFORE the Convention!

And:

…our job is to transform the Democratic Party and this country.

YEAH, we get it that you’re ONLY interested in the Democratic Party and NOT in actual Progressive Values! But, hey, IF YOU CAN “transform” the Democratic Party to become Progressive, great, I wish you luck, you’re gonna need it. Of course, sane progressives understand that you’re probably just flapping your lips because you sold out and don’t even intend to do more than lip-service to these goals – we DO hope we’re wrong!

In the mean time, you can stop holding actual Progressive values back!

Note also that that email was written by Jeff Weaver, the sellout man himself. And in closing he begs for money as a way of signaling we’re still with him. He’s gonna get crickets from me!

Fundraising data at the Center for Responsive Politics shows that Wasserman Schultz’s main campaign committee raised a similar $3,373,950 but her Leadership PAC spent an additional $1,193,571. According to Politico, the “super PAC Patriot Majority PAC also spent $640,000 to back her.”

Unlike Canova, whose small donors constituted 75 percent of his fundraising total, only 23 percent of Wasserman Schultz’s main campaign committee donors were small.

‘Everyday American’ Taxpayers Funded $90,000 Private Jet For Hillary (And Her Mom) To Visit Her Chef”

Turns out, that Navy officer is retired Chief Culinary Specialist, Oscar Flores, of the U.S. Navy Reserve, and he seems to have an unusually close relationship with the Clintons. Flores originally served as Bill’s White House Chef but has stuck with the Clintons over the years and currently serves as their “Director of Operations” at their home in Chappaqua.

In fact, according to a note from CNBC, the Clinton’s are so tight with their chef that back in 2011 then Secretary of State Hillary chartered a G-5 to attend his Navy retirement ceremony in San Diego. Per Hillary’s official schedule below, she also brought Bill, Chelsea and her mom, Dorothy Rodham, along for the ride…the extra seats were just going to be wasted otherwise…might as well bring the family along to enjoy the lovely San Diego weather.

What’s not ironic, but sad is that it looks like no one’s done any maintenance on it since I left L.A. in ’83. And yes, you recognize it from hundreds of movies. “Tax Records Reveal Donald Trump Donated $100,000 To The Clinton Foundation”

Despite his recent criticism of the Clinton Foundation, Donald Trump apparently donated at least $100,000 to the organization, according to a 2009 tax document circulated online Tuesday night and foundation records.

The Clinton Foundation’s website shows “Donald J. Trump” under a list of individuals and organizations that donated between $100,000 and $250,000 to the foundation.

The foundation recently came under fire after Trump accused his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, of running a “pay-to-play scheme” during her time as secretary of state that allegedly awarded donors with special treatmen

Timothy Tyler had no history of violence or prison time when he was sentenced to life behind bars.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/timothy-tyler-lsd_us_57c6dc2fe4b078581f1039fd?section=&

The whole story isn’t posted there, but they’re still not letting him out til 2018 (for some reason) and he has to go into rehab. I mean, ugh and ugh. WTF. They already stole 1/2 the guy’s life and probably ruined the rest of it. WTF??

Comment guy adds:

Background is missing in this story. He was sentenced in 1992, not allowed any music until 2012. He’s 47 now.His father was implicated because he mailed some LSD to his address. Dad got 10 years and died in prison. And he’s being released in 2018??!!
What are they waiting for.

“OBAMA SCRAMBLES TO PASS TPP AS CORPORATE TRIBUNALS FACE SCRUTINY”

Though opposition to TPP has typically focused on the threat of losing American jobs, another concern is coming front and center: loss of sovereignty through a byzantine process known as investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS).

ISDS allows companies to sue states using private, three-man corporate tribunals as judges. The corporate tribunal process was originally intended to protect corporations from having their property nationalized by foreign countries. By allowing companies to recover lost funds, it was thought, states would be less likely to nationalize foreign assets. As a result, foreign investment would increase into countries in desperate need of it.

Under current practice, however, ISDS has become a way for transnational corporations to pressure governments to change health and safety regulations and let corporate executives walk on criminal charges.

Seems we now live in the “Twilight Zone”.

• MsPythia

Made me laugh! 🙂

• Bernie certainly needs someone to stick their foot in his ass.

• MsPythia

I think someone already has? What else could explain not doing anything when it’s clear the primary was rigged?

• Rationalization. Emotionally-driven loyalty to a party (like so many other party loyalists), and on, and on, and on.

• MsPythia

It’s totally lunatic. Loyalty to party that fucked you over and DEFRAUDED your supporters out of all their money and time when you never, ever stood a chance?

• Have you not watched the last 30 years of Democratic party voters? LOL

• MsPythia

A fair point. But we never had the proof on their dirt before. Bernie and all of his supporters do because of the hack, and he still chose to do nothing and some of his supporters are actually going to vote for Shillz. That’s stupid and crazy, and pathetic.

• Um, no we’ve had plenty of proof of the dirt, hence my original statement.

• MsPythia

Not like this proof. We’ve been lied to, fed false rhetoric for bait and switch and put up with the Democrats moving right for a long time, but we never had any hard evidence that could be taken to court to challenge the power of the status quo before, but with these hacks we finally did. The people who would vote for Hillary now are only showing they’re fine with being treated like shit.

• Again, yeah, like this proof. It’s just this time, more people were paying attention and that made it harder for more people to deny. [shrug] I can recall many people acknowledging the Clintons as right-wingers, after his first term.

• MsPythia

It’s not just about the fact that mask has been pulled off — it’s solid evidence of a crime — a theft not only of democracy, but of an enormous amount of money. Bernie had to give Shillz all his money that was left after she “won” the nomination. But like I said, every bit of that money was defrauded from us, since he never, ever had a chance to win at all.

• 2000, Al Gore. Theft of an election, all the evidence was there that not only did FL Republicans steal the election, but that the Dems tacitly cooperated by not demanding the recounts they should have, and did so for political favors.

Added: Plus electronic voting-machines vote-switching, disenfranchisement, involuntary registration changes. The whole lot.

• MsPythia

That’s true. But this time it wasn’t one party against the other. This time it was Democrats against Democrats — the Neoliberals ratfucked and stole the nomination and a huge pile of money from the Progressives. The idea that there are Bernie supporters who are still “loyal Democrats” and lecturing people to “support Hillary, or else Trump!” are to be pitied and laughed at!

• “one party against the other.”

You still believe the kayfabe about there’s two parties?

• MsPythia

Yes. But this is how I would characterize this: while both Democrats and Republicans are of the same economic class of the 1%, they still love to jockey for power and control in their respective camps — even though they often share many of the exact same goals and even though they often socialize with each other. It can basically be boiled down to WHO is going to get to hold the rei(g)ns of power, and how much wealth they and their friends will be able to extract while in power.

I grew up in a place where there was a lot of these extraordinarily wealthy, powerful old money Brahmins of the American capitalist system, so I consider myself something of a student of their madness, greed, selfishness, and psychopathic behavior, and do think I have a pretty firm grasp on the entire dynamic. (And btw, I grew up middle class there, with grandparents who were communists who only moved to this country in the 1930’s. I never asked, but I believe they moved the family to such a place so we could all make exactly this sort of study — so that we would ultimately have the ability to defeat these people. But I digress…)

There are indeed two parties (or camps is more accurate), and they are filled with lots of people, many of whom have everything common more often than not. But, that does not keep them from fighting like petulant children/crazed weasels, to see who can WIN biggest all the fucking time. It’s also important to keep in mind that since birth, huge numbers of these people have been told that the rules that apply to all other ordinary Americans absolutely do not apply to them. There are basically no limits for these people, and never have been — in every way we could possibly name.
Oh — and those that don’t grow up in this bubble have the same sorts of characters, and sense of entitlement, but they’re often so much worse — indeed they would have to be to achieve that same power without the pedigree. That’s who the Clinton’s are. The Worst of the Worst.

• RTIII

False.

• RTIII

No, there was always some “significant” percentage – like 20%+ that were (apparently) actual progressives. Unfortunately, through THIS primary process it’s been shown many of those supposed progressives are not in fact progressives – like Al Franken, for one!

• Dosido3

now that guy is a big disappointment along with Boxer. and John Lewis. It’s all about the power, perks and spoils.

• Dosido3

Honestly, I give Bernie the benefit of Big Doubt because yes, he knows it’s rigged, but did he really realize how dangerous the Clinton gang is? I think he’s staring down the barrel of a gun, metaphorically speaking. He has fought for workers all his life, pointed out where the invisible wires are on the puppets, and only now…because he went up against Hillary…has he changed his tune. First time ever.
I was thinking today about how people don’t really change…until they have experienced a huge trauma. I think something big got to him. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. I don’t think he sold out. I think he was threatened. Look at the trail of dead bodies.

• RTIII

Agreed, that’s where I am too.

• towerofbabel

Something big went down. Maybe they have something on him, or he was threatened, or offered big money? Something changed him radically. My guess is he won’t be around long. I hope he’s not positioning for 2020 incase Clinton loses. No, that would be a pipe dream.

The most likely scenario is that he has something they could prosecute of harass him with. So they schooled him up and now he’s towing the line.

“Brazil’s President Rousseff ousted from office by Senate”

In the background of the entire fight was a wide-ranging investigation into billions of dollars in kickbacks at state oil company Petrobras. The two-year probe has led to the jailing of dozens of top businessmen and politicians from across the political spectrum, and threatens many of the same lawmakers who voted to remove Rousseff.

Rousseff argued that many opponents just wanted her out of the way so they could save their own skins by tampering with the investigation, which Rousseff had refused to do.

Impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff have put a spotlight on corruption in the ranks of Brazil’s lawmakers. Watchdog groups say about 60 percent of the 594 legislators in both chambers of Congress are being investigated for wrongdoing or are facing corruption charges, including the three men in line to replace Rousseff if she is removed from office.

WTF???

“The Mysterious Private Police Force That’s Killing People In The Nation’s Capital”

On November 3, the MPD said it was investigating the incident, and a grand jury convened in December to determine whether or not the special officers should be charged. But authorities have been tight-lipped about their findings the entire time.

As the MPD remains mum, the private company that the special officers worked for, Blackout Investigations and Security Services, is equally quiet about the homicide.

Almost one year has passed since the fatal encounter with special officers, and aside from the autopsy results, Beverly is still missing crucial details about what happened. She doesn’t know why Alonzo was at the apartment complex. She doesn’t know the names of the special officers who apprehended her son, why they had done so in the first place, and how Alonzo sustained all of his injuries.

“Clinton emailed classified information after leaving State Dept.”

Hillary Clinton continued sending classified information even after leaving the State Department, The Post has exclusively learned.

On May 28, 2013, months after stepping down as secretary of state, Clinton sent an email to a group of diplomats and top aides about the “123 Deal” with the United Arab Emirates.

But the email, which was obtained by the Republican National Committee through a Freedom of Information Act request, was heavily redacted upon its release by the State Department because it contains classified information.

The markings on the email state it will be declassified on May 28, 2033, and that information in the note is being redacted because it contains “information regarding foreign governors” and because it contains “Foreign relations or foreign activities of the United States, including confidential sources.”

SQUIRREL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may have been laughing when Donald Trump responded to word of possible Russian involvement in DNC hacks by joking that the country should hack Hillary Clinton’s email server, but some House Democrats are taking it very seriously. Representatives John Conyers, Elijah Cummings, Eliot Engel and Bennie Thompson have sent a letter asking the FBI to investigate the possibility of a link between Trump officials and the attacks. They claim it’s vital to know whether or not Trump and his staff “directly caused or indirectly motivated” the hacks — they could be helping Russia interfere with the election, if you believe the letter.

There’s no smoking gun here. Instead, the Democrats are trying to raise eyebrows by referencing both the pro-Russia talk of Trump’s campaign as well as his aides’ connections to Russian officials and agendas.

When we imagine the world of the Cretaceous period, millions of years before the Chicxulub meteorite smashed into the Gulf of Mexico, usually we think of gigantic animals. Dinosaurs smashed through the forests, and giant flying reptiles called pterosaurs ruled the skies with their 10-meter wingspans. But a new discovery of a small pterosaur, with a wingspan of only about a meter, has overturned this popular idea.

This unnamed pterosaur, likely related to the much larger azhdarchid pterosaurs of the same period, is described in a paper published in Royal Society Open Science. Two fragments of its skeleton were discovered on Hornby Island, British Columbia, providing just enough material for scientists to verify that it was not simply an adolescent version of a larger animal. Based on the telltale shape of its vertebrae, the researchers are convinced it’s not a bird, but they don’t have enough remains to say for certain where this new species would fit into the evolutionary tree. Study lead Elizabeth Martin-Silverstone told Nature, “It’s quite different from other animals we’ve studied. There hasn’t really been evidence before of small pterosaurs at this time period.” This finding is a surprise, because many paleontologists believed that pterosaurs evolved to be larger and larger as the Cretaceous wore on.

“Oldest fossils on Earth discovered in 3.7bn-year-old Greenland rocks”

Scientists have discovered the oldest physical evidence for life on the planet in the form of fossils in Greenland rocks that formed 3.7bn years ago.

The researchers believe the structures in the rocks are stromatolites – layered formations, produced by the activity of microbes, that can be found today in extremely saline lagoons in a few locations around the world.

The new fossils are 220 million years older than any previously discovered.

“Up until now the oldest stromatolites have been from Western Australia and

Bill Nye’s social capital has been on the rise in recent years, as he has transitioned from a kid-friendly science show host to a no-nonsense defender of hard science (and bow ties). His polite aggression has appeared on talk shows, lecture halls, and comedy series, but none of his enjoyable bluster has come in his own series in some time.

Netflix has announced plans to change that with the introduction of Bill Nye Saves the World, a new Netflix-exclusive talk show series launching in spring 2017. In a Wednesday press release, Netflix described the show’s aspirations to “refute anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders, or titans of industry”—so the show is clearly aiming to maintain the junk-science battle that Nye has loudly fought in recent years.

And this is why we need encryption backdoors right Hillary (fucking idiot)

The world has seen the most unsettling attack yet resulting from the so-called Rowhammer exploit, which flips individual bits in computer memory. It’s a technique that’s so surgical and controlled that it allows one machine to effectively steal the cryptographic keys of another machine hosted in the same cloud environment.

Until now, Rowhammer has been a somewhat clumsy and unpredictable attack tool because it was hard to control exactly where data-corrupting bit flips happened. While previous research demonstrated that it could be used to elevate user privileges and break security sandboxes, most people studying Rowhammer said there was little immediate danger of it being exploited maliciously to hijack the security of computers that use vulnerable chips. The odds of crucial data being stored in a susceptible memory location made such hacks largely a matter of chance that was stacked against the attacker. In effect, Rowhammer was more a glitch than an exploit.

Now, computer scientists have developed a significantly more refined Rowhammer technique they call Flip Feng Shui. It manipulates deduplication operations that many cloud hosts use to save memory resources by sharing identical chunks of data used by two or more virtual machines. Just as traditional Feng Shui aims to create alignment or harmony in a home or office, Flip Feng Shui can massage physical memory in a way that causes crypto keys and other sensitive data to be stored in locations known to be susceptible to Rowhammer.

BEWARE of attachments

Security experts often talk about the importance of educating people about the risks of “phishing” e-mails containing links to malicious websites. But sometimes, even awareness isn’t enough. A study by researchers at a university in Germany found that about half of the subjects in a recent experiment clicked on links from strangers in e-mails and Facebook messages—even though most of them claimed to be aware of the risks.

The researchers at the Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, led by FAU Computer Science Department Chair Dr Zinaida Benenson, revealed the initial results of the study at this month’s Black Hat security conference. Simulated “spear phishing” attacks were sent to 1,700 test subjects—university students—from fake accounts.

The e-mail and Facebook accounts were set up with the ten most common names in the age group of the targets. The Facebook profiles had varying levels of publicly accessible profile and timeline data—some with public photos and profile photos, and others with minimal data. The messages claimed the links were to photos taken at a New Year’s Eve party held a week before the study. Two sets of messages were sent out: in the first, the targets were addressed by their first name; in the second, they were not addressed by name, but more general information about the event allegedly photographed was given. Links sent resolved to a webpage with the message “access denied,” but the site logged the clicks by each student.

The messages that addressed the targets by name scored clicks from 56 percent of e-mail targets and 37 percent of Facebook message recipients. But while the less-targeted messages in the second test only yielded 20 percent results for the e-mails, they scored 42 percent via Facebook messages.

Kappelman and his colleagues write, “Although the fractures in Lucy’s humeri provide evidence that she was conscious when she stretched out her arms in an attempt to break her fall, the severity of the numerous compressive fractures and presumed organ damage suggest that death followed swiftly.” It appears that the joint in her leg suffered from extreme compression of the type you’d expect in somebody who fell on their feet from a great height, out of a local tree where nests might be as many as 23 meters off the ground. (They estimated this height based on the typical heights of chimpanzee nests today.)

University of Wisconsin-Madison anthropologist John Hawks posted an essay about why Kappelman’s analysis is problematic, especially given that he and his colleagues didn’t compare the fractures in her bones to other fossils from the same era. Hawks points out that there is a much simpler explanation for Lucy’s “injuries” than a severely traumatic fall: “becoming a fossil.” The process of fossilization often fragments bones in exactly the way that Lucy’s bones are broken, and animals who were fossilized at the same time as Lucy have similar fractures. So Hawks isn’t discounting the idea that Lucy died of a fall, but he believes that we need more evidence before confirming it.

“Israel To Specify West Bank ‘Collective Punishment’ Zone”

Launched this month, as much of the world was on holiday, Avigdor Lieberman’s plan for the Palestinians – retooling Israel’s occupation – received less attention than it should.

Defence minister since May, Mr Lieberman has been itching to accelerate Israel’s annexation by stealth of the West Bank.

His “carrot and stick” plan has three components. First, he intends to sideline the Palestinian Authority (PA) in favour of a new local leadership of “notables” hand-picked by Israel.

“NYPD: Law would shield any discipline in chokehold case”

New York City might never tell the public if the police officer at the center of the Eric Garner chokehold death case is disciplined, the mayor and police commissioner indicated this week after reaching a new interpretation of a 40-year-old state civil rights law.

The New York Police Department recently ended a longstanding practice of letting reporters see a rundown of disciplinary actions, saying officials had concluded it violated the law.

Asked Tuesday whether the new stance would apply to the officer who put his arm around Garner’s neck in a case that helped fuel the Black Lives Matter movement, Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio said officials “have to honor state law.”

Citing the mayor’s comments, Police Commissioner William Bratton said Wednesday the results of any potential disciplinary trial against Officer Daniel Pantaleo “would not be publicly available,” though he predicted they probably would eventually “get out” somehow

The rightwingers are rabid and bigoted on this on this topic of course, but even so, it does seem like it might be worth wondering if Huma Abedin hasn’t been trained to act as mole, while emotionally tying herself as closely and intimately as she could to the Clinton’s. She’s gained a great deal of power as a result, and all while Hillary appears to have a lot of emotional as well as physical issues. Wikileaks leaks of her emails seems to show that she has been far in more control of what was happening as Sec. of State than Hillz was… While the Clinton Foundation hoovered up 10-25 million dollars from the Saudi’s (and many other states).

I don’t think Abedin’s connections sway Hillary Clinton in any way. Rather, she was chosen because her ideology aligns with that of Clinton and the other neocons. They all “believe” that Hezbollah, who rarely attack outside the Middle East and focus their political and military actions against Israel, is a bigger threat than the radicalized Sunni and Wahhabi terrorists armed by the US and other western countries who reek havoc across the entire world and spread through the Middle East like a plague filling every power vacuum left in the wake of western imperialism.
