Die, Monster, Die!  is a 1965 horror film directed by Daniel Haller. The film is a loose adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft‘s story “The Colour Out of Space“. It was shot in February/March 1965 at Shepperton Studios under the working title The House at the End of the World.

Stephen Reinhart, an American scientist (Nick Adams), pays a visit to the estate of his British fiancé’s family. He finds a scorched area of countryside near an enormous crater. Local townspeople are hostile toward him and refuse to either drive him to his destination or talk about the family that lives there. The source of all these problems is later revealed to be a radioactive meteorite kept hidden in the basement by his girlfriend’s father, Nahum Witley (Boris Karloff), who has been using the radiation to mutate plant and animal life, with horrific consequences to his subjects and to members of his family. Nahum’s wife, Latetia, mutated by the meteorite and driven insane, dies in an attack on Steve and Susan. After Helga, a maid who has been mutated and driven mad by radiation, comes after Nahum, he is mutated after his attacker falls on the meteorite and is killed. The Nahum monster attacks Steve and Susan, but falls from a balcony and bursts into flame when he hits the floor, setting the entire Witley mansion ablaze. Steve and Susan escape the burning mansion, and never look back.

Anything with Boris Karloff in it is well worth a look.

  • Sorry to pollute this thread with politics right off the start but this is something worth knowing. I’m sure this isn’t the first time, but it seems clear there is some serious mission creep happening lately. Too bad there’s so much attention on the horse race and so little on this stuff. Also, a real shame there’s not even a small faction of a political party for us anti war people anymore. The Dems got rid of them all it seems.

    US Forces Enter Syria
BEIRUT, Sept 16 (Reuters) – A small number of U.S. forces entered the Syrian town of al-Rai near the Turkish border on Friday as part of operations to coordinate air strikes against Islamic State, a senior rebel source said.

However, the five or six U.S. military personnel were then forced to withdraw towards the Turkish border after Syrian rebels protested against their presence in the town, the source said.

Who is on whose side now?
      I can’t keep track.

      • towerofbabel

Neoliberalism is on the side Neoconservatism which is on the side of war. That’s all you need to know.

    • Shaykayvah

To me, this is the most important issue, war has become common place. I was out to dinner with some ‘Progressive Democrats’ last night, and they were voicing the old canard, “Obama has been an awesome President”. I said “sure if you like murderers”, I don’t think they like me all that much anymore. Fuck war, and fuck all who wage it and celebrate it.

        Mornin’ ma’am 😉

    • Good morning 17 :^)

      • 17

And to your, my dear 😉

  • I absolutely adore having a Syfy Saturday thread. I used to post on the Battlestar Galactica forum. I loved those people, by the way we would argue and fight all the time.

If you guys haven’t watched Battlestar Galactica produced and written by Ronald D Moore you should give the series a try, there are plenty of mistakes in the show but overall it was well written and well done. An excellent TV series.

For those who don’t know the story line, you can familiarize yourself here with this Wiki page.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_(2004_TV_series)

One year Battlestar Galactica decided in between Seasons to do a web series. Titled Resistance. The short setup is the humans after suffering a genocide. Find refuge on a resource-limited planet, which soon becomes occupied by a Splinter Group of the Cylons a robotic race that had attack them, their main goal was to try to achieve peace with the humans. Needless to say this was an odd way of going about it. Here are all the webisodes. Only amounts to 26 minutes in total.

    Resistance

    • 17

      Thanks Steph 😉

      • I had meant to ask if either you or Unka, posted on the Battlestar Galactica forum?

        • 17

I didn’t even know there was one. I haven’t seen an episode of that show in years.

          • Oh my yes… during the season there could be 1000 up to 2000 posters, off-season anywhere between 100 to 500 on any given day. During one particular launch of a Season there was over 10,000, poeple logged on. It crashed the site.

It keeps hitting my mind that there was a poster who had went by 17, however all the blogs and all the forums are starting to blend in my mind, and is becoming a blur to me.

Some of the most intelligent people I’ve met was on that forum. We would discuss everything from philosophy, politics, science…to moral dilemmas. When you have that high of a count of posters you get some wickedly intelligent people posting. Heated debates were a regular feature. When the show ended, we splintered off into groups but sooner or later they died out. Lots of people went to Facebook.

I’ve really never come across a forum that had the same feel, until now.

          • 17

            Sounds cool. 😉

          • SmotPoker

Bonus points for making you weep too….

As stated, this was the first of six to be harvested. We’ll do another on Monday, and from there on out we should be able to get one plant done a day, and be done with it. Until next the round….

I think we let them go a week or two longer than needed so that’s going to make for some serious couch lock cannabis. I’m like a kid at Xmas now, just waiting to “unwrap” my presents. I’m going to tear into that which you see hanging on Monday morning….

          • Edwin

I like it, but I don’t go crazy over it. Too me it’s just another side dish, but to Koreans it’s the glue that keeps the country together and the spirit that keeps it alive.

Asked the stranger on the Internet…..

State Department and Establishment Media Silent on Israel’s 200 Nukes

Not only has the State Department ignored Colin Powell’s revelation Israel has two hundred nukes, so has the establishment media.

After DCLeak posted a tranche of Powell emails hacked from the former secretary of state’s personal Gmail account, RT’s Caleb Maupin asked the State Department for comment on Powell’s mention of Israel’s nukes. He was ignored.

Meanwhile, the story has been virtually ignored by the media. The Sun in Britain reported on it, as did The Times of Israel and Haaretz in Israel, but The New York Times and The Washington Post have remained silent.

The FBI are set to gain additional powers to hack and monitor an unlimited number of computers with just one warrant from any judge by December this year.

Unless Congress step in to stop changes from being made to “Rule 41”, the FBI will have unprecedented powers to snoop on innocent citizens legally.

The imagery of the Ungoliant (a spider) whoes never ending hunger can never be appeased. Leads to her eventual demise as she devours and destroys herself.

It’s the Perfect Analogy for neoliberalism/ unfettered capitalism.

    http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Ungoliant

    • SmotPoker

Weird. The worst of Tolkiens work is your favorite villain. I think you’re the first person I’ve heard that had anything good to say about that particular book.

      • I’m curious what were the criticisms that you’ve heard.

        • SmotPoker

Oh, just here, and there. I’ve read his other work, but I never got around to reading that one, I’ve started and stopped it a couple times though. I have a copy of it, I just haven’t made the time to read it.

          • It seems people on mass, don’t even know of its existence, much less to have an opinion on it one way or another.

Token himself never published Silmarillion. It was a collection of notes, stories and essays that his child after his demise published. If I had to guess he created the world and backstory and from those ideas he developed The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. A worthy read.

A critique is something I’m always interested in. Statements of popular feelings is pretty much worthless to me, since people don’t like or understand things most of the time.

          • SmotPoker

I think a lot of the folks that have a poor opinion of were expecting a prequel to The Hobbit, and LOTR….

I dunno, I’ll get around to it one of these days….

          • The Silmarillion is definitely a history book, as opposed to the Red Book of the March, which is a narrative.

From climate change and evolution to sex education and vaccination, there has always been tension between scientists and Congress. But Smith, who has been in Congress since 1987 and assumed the chairmanship of the Science Committee in 2013, has escalated that tension into outright war….He has, however, received more than six hundred thousand dollars in campaign contributions from the oil-and-gas industry during his time in Congress—more than from any other single industry. With a focus that is unprecedented, he’s now using his position to attack scientists and activists who work on climate change.

  • Playpen: The Story of the FBI’s Unprecedented and Illegal Hacking Operation

The Playpen investigation—driven by the FBI’s hacking campaign—resulted in hundreds of criminal prosecutions that are currently working their way through the federal courts. The issues in these cases are technical and the alleged crimes are distasteful. As a result, relatively little attention has been paid to the significant legal questions these cases raise.

But make no mistake: these cases are laying the foundation for the future expansion of law enforcement hacking in domestic criminal investigations, and the precedent these cases create is likely to impact the digital privacy rights of Internet users for years to come. In a series of blog posts in the coming days and weeks, we’ll explain what the legal issues are and why these cases matter to Internet users the world over.

The Israel Lobby, the Syrian War and the Meaning of Empire

There seems to be a series of debates going on in activist circles these days that are inter-connected, the
continued plight of Alison Weir and her abysmal treatment by various NGOs and the issue of who to stand in solidarity with in regards to Syria. Both are informed essentially by one foundational theoretical point, the argument over the role of the neocons in Washington and the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), with a significant group of people seeing everything going on in the region rooted in the PNAC policy
suggestions that led us down the road to the war on Iraq and continued the brutalization of the Palestinians under George W. Bush.

NYPD Steals $18,000 from Man Because He Was Carrying a Banned Pocket Knife

…estimates suggest that over the past ten years, this particular ban has been the reason for the prosecution of “60,000 New Yorkers … many of them working people who use folding knives as part of their jobs.” A recent incident shows another unintended consequence of upholding the gravity knife statute — one that cost a South Bronx resident $18,000.

~~Bet he carries a gun from now on.

Hell, I carry a gun on the 1st and 1st friday of the month. If I collected all my rents in cash I couldn’t carry it in my pockets. Outside of those two days its locked in a hidden access safe.

That aside aside however, how the hell does it make any sense to ban a lock back knife? A box cutter is just as fast or faster to deploy. I can understand something like a switchblade or a ballistic knife being banned items, but the law by definition seems to cover a fold in handle style knife.

Final note, they caught a guy with a knife, where the hell did the 18 grand come from?

Breaking: US Bombs Syrian Army in Der Ezzor, Backing ISIS Advance, 80 Killed

Russia may retaliate against this sneak attack by hitting US base in Iraq with unstoppable Kaliber missiles.

Syrian officials including the Minister of Justice, Najem Hamad Al-Ahmad, told VT that US planes launched from Iraq, including A10 and F16s, attacked Syrian Army positions near the Der Ezzor airport, killing 80 and wounding up to 100.

Russian Ministry of Defense officials have confirmed the story, a massive violation of the cease fire. The
attack was followed up by an ISIS ground offensive showing clear signs of coordination and a strong likelihood that US Army Special Forces are on the ground coordinating air cover with ISIS deep inside Syria.

They would truly be foolish to use sizzlers. At current only the sea/sub launched variants are known to be operational, air launched and ground launched systems are not known to be in production yet, let alone fielded.

However, even if there were air or ground launch missiles ready to go, if they launched one the radar track would show exactly what it was, and this who the operator was.

If us personnel operating in Iraq caught a Russian cruise missile it would be a TLAM party to end the ages in Latakia.

And it likely really would end the ages.

Spike in US Intel Ops Against Russia Signals Relations at ‘Point of No Return’

With the Syrian-Russian-Iran anti-terrorism coalition having stopped the planned take down of Syria, the US coalition, which has both supported terrorists and fought them, can become even more dangerous.

When you add in the failed coup in Turkey, it gets even worse. After a steady stream of regime-change disasters, Americans have kind of figured out whom the real threat is.

Russia could ground UK’s F-35s by killing all 40 pilots – General’s memo

A retired British general believes Russia would not need to shoot down the UK’s F-35 fighter jets – it would suffice to kill the “40 or so” people who can pilot them. It comes as one of the points in a memo obtained by the Financial Times.

The 10-page document was sent to Defense Secretary Michael Fallon in April by General Richard Barrons, who retired as the commander of UK Joint Forces Command the same month.

Did an Industry Front Group Create Fake Twitter Accounts to Promote the Dakota Access Pipeline?

A DeSmog investigation has revealed the possibility that a front group supporting the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) — the Midwest Alliance for Infrastructure Now (MAIN) — may have created fake Twitter profiles, known by some as “sock puppets,” to convey a pro-pipeline message over social media.
And MAIN may be employing the PR services of the firm DCI Group, which has connections to the Republican Party, in order to do so.

Science Fiction or Fictitious Science? You be the judge. Randall Mills is an inverter and promoter with an highly articulated theory and new energy proposal. He is reviled by conventional physicists because his theory predicts a fractional form of hydrogen–the “hydrino”–a more stable form of hydrogen. So he is highly controversial but has continued to experiment with his revolutionary concept and has drawn in big money. Skeptics mock him as a charlatan. • It’s not a about skepticism, it’s about results, and though Mills has been making these claims of a breakthrough since the 1990s, He’s never, ever done anything more than give closed, carefully orchestrated “demonstrations” and the only actual, objective and unbiased analysis of his theory shows it completely fails to support the processes he claims.

In general, given the complete lack of any real technology to come out of the “free energy” believers, ever, one should adopt a default attitude of “prove it.” And a lack of either allowing public scrutiny or lack of a very rapid industrialization of a process should be clear enough proof that it’s just another hoax, whether intentional or not.

See the European Space Agency’s analysis for but one example of how his theory is self-contradicting and mathematically a dead-end. Or, just google “Hydrino Hoax” for a wealth of evidence of the facts.

A critical analysis of the hydrino model

In this paper we have considered the theoretical foundations of the hydrino hypothesis,
both within the theoretical framework of CQM, in which hydrinos were originally suggested, and within standard quantum mechanics. We found that CQM is inconsistent and has several serious deficiencies. Amongst these are the failure to reproduce the energy levels of the excited states of the hydrogen atom, and the absence of Lorentz invariance. Most importantly, we found that CQM does not predict the existence of hydrino states! Also, standard quantum mechanics cannot encompass hydrino states, with the properties currently attributed to them. Hence there remains no theoretical support of the hydrino hypothesis. This strongly suggests that the experimental evidence put forward in favour of the existence of hydrinos should be reconsidered for interpretation in terms of conventional physics. This reconsideration of the experimental data is beyond the scope of the current paper. Also, to understand properly the experimental results presented by Mills et al., it would be helpful if these were independently reproduced by some other experimental groups.

What Bruno Latour, (sociologist of science) points out is that many newly observed phenomenon are greeted with skepticism because they do not fit into a prevailing theory. For example, Louis Pasteur was mocked by chemists for deducing from observations that bacteria (organisms not just chemistry) were essential in fermentation. That pattern is repeated throughout the history of science when empirical observations are denied because they didn’t fit into the existing theories. In other words, new phenomenon can appear “metaphysical” until a theory is developed that can account for them. That is one aspect of the sociology of science.

So my attitude is to wait and see. Mills has quite a lot of analysis from reputable universities validating aspects of his devices but who knows? The jury is still out as far as I’m concerned but he will have to produce a functioning energy device soon or he’s out of here.

        • “Mills has quite a lot of analysis from reputable universities validating aspects of his devices but who knows”

That’s not quite true, he has a lot of individuals who have visited his business and come away convinced. No university has replicated his work or confirmed his theory, in 25 years. See the Wikipedia link above.

A claim of independent validation is worthless. He needs independently peer-reviewed, reproducible results. Until then there’s no reason to trust his claims, particularly since they appear to contradict known physics.

      • 17

        Hey, it worked for NIST.

        • panem et circenses

Yes. I get the joke. Nine eleven.

      • towerofbabel

Who is trusting them? I’m just observing this.
More generally, physics will be questioned otherwise science is over.

        • panem et circenses

I didn’t say you were, I was talking about Mills. Peer reviewed reproducible results or gtfo.

The fact that he’s received tens of millions of dollars from investors and already has a business model to sell a product that doesn’t yet exist outside of theory (it’s half of the first hour of his speech) does nothing but increase my skepticism.

          • I’ve seen plenty of “Internet Entrepreneurs” get more money, without even the speech.

          • panem et circenses

He talks like a salesman, and not a scientist. He’s selling the idea of making money through investing in his more efficient energy source as much or more than the science behind the process.

US elections and the media: How did we get here?

In this special edition of The Listening Post from New York City we explore how a lack of regulation and absence of a strong public broadcaster in America has impacted the coverage of US politics.

As the 2016 presidential election campaign heads into the home stretch, many Americans are accusing their news outlets, particularly on the broadcast side, of not just reporting on the race for the White House – but actually affecting the outcome, through their commercial agendas, prioritising ratings and revenues over journalism and responsible reporting.

    • It wouldn’t let me watch the video… it’s stated because of my location?

      • Some internet media outlets have agreements in place with other internet media outlets that people in certain countries may only view the video on the partner’s site, and not on the originators, or vice-versa, etc. That’s what may be happening to you.

The AJ site thinks I’m in Canada, and let me watch it.

        • Thanks for the FYI.

          • As I usually bring up, if you had a VPN, you could choose what country web sites think you’re coming from, as well as enhance your privacy. I highly reccomend it . 😀

      • 17

That’s odd, because as you know I’m an hour or so south of you and it plays for me. Come on down and we’ll share some popcorn and a beer. 😉

        • You’re definitely more than an hour away from me. I’ll bring along some Strongbow and my healthy brownies :^)

          • 17

Deal. Mrs 17 can sleep in the garage. 😉

          • Hmm.. on second thought…. ;^)

          • 17

            Ouch!

          • Shakes head.

I just meant that you could use her bed. Friends don’t let friends drive after drinking.

          • Hon, your fine. I took it as good natured joking.

          • 17

I got slapped for it. Literally.

There’s been some sort of big explosion in Chelsea, NYC. Fox News is the only MSM channel reporting last I checked (I was trying to listen to the coverage but now my mother is wondering why she hears sirens in our area – in California, remember – and I can’t pay attention to the news and the scanner at the same time).

    Here’s the twitter timeline: https://twitter.com/hashtag/chelsea?data_id=tweet%3A777317049974427648&f=tweets&vertical=default&src=tren

  • Annaleigh

At least 25 injuries from the explosion…counterterrorism unit out there now.

MSNBC and CNN can’t be arsed to pry themselves away from Clinton/Obama’s speeches to cover it.

    • None of them serious. Some kind of explosive was set off in a dumpster, in an alley. Similar to the trash can explosion earlier in New Jersey.

    • My honest analysis: I’m not very much worried about this, looks like common criminal behavior. If it’s terrorism, it’s monumentally inept terrorism. 😀

      • Annaleigh

        I hope you’re right.

        • I always fall back to this advice, it’s served me well.

There was reports on Twitter of an explosion at a mall in Charlottesville, VA but the local news there just confirmed it was a transformer. Hate when coincidences like that happen, they just make people more jittery!

          • Not me, but maybe that’s just me, as I’ve seen the media cry wolf one too many times. 😀

    • Shaykayvah

Well hell, we better go bomb some random country, stat!

      • Edwin

they don’t need a reason (they do it already)

        • Edwin

aren’t there some humanitarian bombing campaigns in progress now?

          • Shaykayvah

Yes, there’s life saving collateral damage being waged as we speak.

      • I’m sure the DNC and Clinton campaign will be blaming Iran and Russia by Monday. Or BernieBros.

      • Annaleigh

Yeah, more of that will work! /s

  • Here’s a whole passel of images for those of us that remember prehistory, like “The Sears Catalog” or “The 1970s”

And remember: There are Fondues, and Fondonts

Where are the men with the hairy chests and moustaches? (I used to like that.)

      I want the $100 calculator.

those things were amazing when they came out

we actually used to do all that math stuff on paper… with pencils

        • Shaykayvah

Shit, in elementary school, we had to learn to use an abacus.

          • Edwin

          • Shaykayvah

Well yeah, for the smart kids…

          • SmotPoker

Lucky! All we had was dirt to do our work in, and we had to supply our own sticks.

          • 17

Talk about lucky! All WE had was creek water and nothing to put it in!

          • SmotPoker

Hell fire son, that’s the lap of luxury you had there. We didn’t have no creek, we had to wait for it to rain, and stand outside with our heads tilted back, and mouths open when we wanted water….

        • “Show your work.”

        • towerofbabel

          What is a pencil?

My kid, and dad went to the Lewis Black show last night at The Wharton Center in Lansing. A couple/few years back I took my dad to go see him in Detroit, and it was a great time. I’m sure they had a blast, and that Lewis was in his usual excellent form.

Just watched Revenant with Leonardo DeCaprio and it fucking sucked. Especially the ending. Are you fucking kidding me?! And did anyone hear of BATHES!? Seriously even back then they DID take them. :/ I am pissed I wasted 2hrs and 45 minutes for a shit movie. :/
