wooden_ballot_box_-_smithsonianThis is the Election 2016 Thread: The place to discuss anything and everything about the U.S. presidential election and its candidates.

We’re making this thread as various election topics have become so popular, generating so many comments and replies, that it’s begun to obscure other discussion and links in our daily open thread. This thread is provided as a way for these topics to get the focus they deserve, as well as for the more general politics links in the open thread to get some exposure.

This thread will stay up every day, between now and election day, and will be “refreshed” when the comment count reaches 2000, to ensure that Disqus doesn’t choke.

    • They both look very happy about it, too. 😛

  • Clinton/Trump Neoliberalism: a Media Critique

And so we are presented with two figures, Trump and Clinton. My effort here is not to critique their respective policies, mostly because that is a banal chore, as much as present them as signs in a linguistic sense. One embodies a nativist revolt against neoliberal economics and resulting identity politics. The other embodies those two antagonizing forces.

      Just read. Thanks. Smart take.

Clinton Email Update: There’s Still Nothing To See Here, Folks!
    By smelley pee

    http://crooksandliars.com/2016/09/clinton-email-update

    Ty Morgan

One take-a-way from this whole email fiasco IMO is that the FOIA
needs to be revisited and revised, because it’s clear that it’s only
being used in many cases by the right as a political tool to bludgeon
people they don’t like or agree with.

    smelley pee –> Ty Morgan

    Excellent point and agree, 100%

    • cathyx

And they are going to keep harping on this even after it’s discovered that there’s lots to see here.

You decide. Is this a bad, naughty, naughty bot Donald Trump move or an amusing and kinda funny one?

Delusional Donald Trolls Hillary By Inviting Gennifer Flowers To The Debate
    By Karoli Kuns

When Delusional Donald found out Mark Cuban was going to be sitting
in the front row of Monday night’s debate, he could hardly contain
    himself…

Cuban, after all, has been Trump’s biggest troll for months now, and seems to get under his skin faster than even Hillary does.

Whatever the case, it seems Flowers has accepted the invitation.

Personally, LMFAO… (but, I am a noted misogynist)

Her campaign is run on misogyny, and nothing but misogyny, cuz she ain’t got nuthin’ else.

    • towerofbabel

Is this real? Is this the circus our elections have become? Instead of having Jill and Gary they are going to tag team with trolls?

      • Edwin

Yup. I checked the web. News flash everywhere.

      • Edwin

If you haven’t noticed by now, don’t expect anything “real” out of this cruddy “election”. It’s a “reality” show put on by the 0.1%

      • I already know my response to the entire Uniparty Debate Party™, every question and answer…

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hfYJsQAhl0

So, I don’t even need to watch them.

        • Edwin

But you’ll watch for the show, right? That’s how all this is designed.

All the makings for a Jerry Springer episode. I wonder if they’ll have mystery guests. I wonder if a fist fight… or “cat fight” will break out. Maybe they could put a mud pit down front and let the ladies sort out their differences there. Think of the ratings. Think of the ad $$$$$$$.

          • No, I wont. I’ll put up a live-thread for folks who do, but then I’ll walk away.

Because, when it comes to the sick, brainwashing festival of Kabuki theater known as the “Democratic/Republican Presidential Debates” the only appropriate response is:

            https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/703e7dc01e762e08f9e2f0fbf197820c6914bbb71cae5b06149f06b49596edc8.png

          • Edwin

I am sort of mixed. I haven’t watched Obama speak for years. I haven’t watched Hillary speak for months. I do see bits and pieces, clips, on the web and in videos. I saw clips of her screaming speech the other day (Egad).

I watch some because I want to have some idea what’s going on. It doesn’t mean I swallow anything they say, but I do observe what they’re doing. I would not watch to be “informed” but more to see what kind of bullshit they’re trying to pull off.

The stakes are high: control of the biggest Empire even known to man. I don’t feel I should ignore what they do.

          • Again, as I always point out, with many, many of the psychological compliance techniques used by these campaigns, and in these events, us, human beings, all of us, get no choice to “buy into” them or not, because these techniques work below our conscious decision making level.

Hence, the only way to win is not to play, in this case, that means not to watch, which is what I’ll do.

          • Edwin

            Fair enough. I get it.

I can’t vote in your elections and I already despise your gubbermint/politics/politicians so I doubt anything they say is going to sway me too terribly much. There’s nothing patriotic to stir in me. The Empire is a monster.

          • “The Empire is a monster.”

Truer words have rarely been spoken.

          • Edwin

There was a time you could put a coat of veneer over it and then stick a happy face on top, but not no more.

Growing up, my conservative (Canadian) father used to rail at us when we criticized the USA. He’d get up on his soapbox and freak out at us: “No country has ever done more for the world… blah blah blah.” That could go on for 20 minutes.

Now he thinks it’s a corrupt den of thieves, an oligarchy and a menace to the planet. He’s 87 and grew up during the Depression and then WWII. When you lose those guys, it’s game over. Your soft power is spent. All you got left is hard power.

          • towerofbabel

Hard power and not much of that, really. The economy is a holographic projection–an illusion. When that fails to spellbind, they will turn on the people starting with the weakest. That’s what they always do.

          • Edwin

The Empire cannot continue without militarism (tied to banks and corporations.)

          • towerofbabel

I won’t watch it. It’s disgusting that anyone would watch a debate between these two bedfellows.

          • towerofbabel

Honestly, I think it’s too late to save this country. Its the people. They are willfully stupid. Hopelessly stupid.

          • Edwin

If it’s come this far and the majority seem somehow OK with it, I suspect you are correct.

I don’t have a label for myself. I know I could handle/would be happy with anarchy. My worry is others couldn’t/wouldn’t.

          • panem et circenses

You can be a philosophical anarchist and a practical realist.

          • Edwin

that sounds good to me ^_^

          • Shohanna

Thank you! There isn’t any damned reason to watch the debates. It’s all theater. The Elite win. We did not pick either one as far as I am concerned. I don’t know if there were shenanigans on Trump side, but I can pretty much guess that there were. Hillary wanted him so she would have a “STRONG” reason for people to vote for her. Because she rigged it so SHE would be the nom.

Theater all of it. Someone else is running this country and we don’t know who it is. What we do know is it’s connected to money.

    Re-posting for visibility:

Leaks have revealed that not pissing off Republicans so that they might potentially vote for Clinton is more important to her campaign, and by extension the DNC who they control, than winning down ballot races.

How A Decision In May Changed The General Election

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/rubycramer/how-a-decision-in-may-changed-the-general-election?utm_term=.exGgnrPpY#.byj7WabVx

Comment: “Clinton and her goons had no problem demonizing the left and pretending that they were as bad as the alt right, but she wants to cozy up to Republicans and prevent the party from attacking them so she can use their votes to win herself the presidency, to hell with the rest of the party. If you see no problem with that, then you’re part of the problem.”

    • cathyx

Probably more important than not pissing off fellow democrats too. Republicans are more likely to vote for her than former bernie supporters.

Well…I noticed that the boys in blue don’t have their girl’s back. Not that that is the primary issue. But it does ring a familiar bell. Like the scapegoating of Lyndie England. The men need to be prosecuted too.

      • panem et circenses
      • panem et circenses
        • Dosido3

I get you. There is a calculus of expendability when accountability comes knocking…I’m not saying it’s right.

          • panem et circenses

I’m not attacking, so I hope you don’t feel that I am. I’m simply pointing out how non-intersectional liberal feminism can sometimes be problematic. When a black man is shot down in cold blood on the side of a highway isn’t the time to turn it into a debate about how the woman who shot him is being oppressed.

          • I have a different view point. I see absolutely no problem with acknowledging inherent sexism. While still holding the female officer accountable for her actions.
The fact that she’s almost immediately up on manslaughter charges, while the majority of her male counterparts only had to go through formal review. Is something that needs to be looked at and question from a societal perspective. It should not be used as an excuse as to whether or not she committed a crime.

Acknowledging sexism does not constitute denial of racism.

          • Dosido3

No. I don’t feel attacked at all. And I hope I’m not talking past you either. But you see what’s going on though…the police are continuing to shoot black men in the street and if they are men, it’s especially important to their authority that they continue to get away with it, that we condone it.

I noticed, too, that some reports stated that she was in an “emotional state” which clouded her judgment. Hmm. Seems that is true of the guys too but they will never be described with that verbiage. They are defending themselves…

Now that we’re done body shaming Trump we can go back to slut shaming Melania and stigmatizing sex workers.

Retraction of original article titled “Breaking: Melania Trump Exposed As Former ‘High End Sex Worker’, Campaign Implodes”

    http://bipartisanreport.com/2016/08/22/retraction-melania-trump-story-from-august-21-2016-retracted-with-apology/

I wonder how many people who passed around the original article also passed around this retraction?

  • Annaleigh

Oh great, now I have to be pissed off at Maria Teresa Kumar!
Clinton Campaign Targets Young Latino ‘Bilennials’:

María Teresa Kumar has spent more than a decade trying to engage bilennials as the founding president and CEO of Voto Latino. She said they are the hardest demographic to reach. Voto Latino is trying to mobilize as large a share of Latino voters as it can get, she said.

“Our challenge is trying to undo the harm done by Bernie Sanders and that is a challenge,” Kumar said. The harm, she said, was his speechifying over a “rigged” system as his nominee prospects dwindled.

Thankfully the Latinos for Bernie Twitter account brought this to people’s attention and they’re tweeting her.

    • panem et circenses

She’s a shepherd for the oligarchy. Too many are fooled into believing that their self-appointed or party-injected “leaders” are out for anyone other than themselves, and even when they are that doesn’t necessarily mean they have any idea what they’re doing or saying.

  • Annaleigh

Just some random thoughts before going to bed…I read yet another article on Hillary and millennials (if I find it again in the morning, I’ll post it), this one took the tack that HRC’s problems aren’t quite the fault of all millennials, but mainly the fault of millennials born 1990-1998 more than millennials born 1981-1989. It said the reason why younger millennials are a problem is they have no party loyalty and they don’t really understand what it was like to live under GWB.

So I guess the stats do say older millennials are more likely to stick with the Dems and to give in and support Hillary, but part of the reason I supported Bernie, support Jill, and told the Democratic Party to go fuck itself is precisely *because* I do remember the Bush years. Election night 2000 (my first presidential election) I was spending the month at a friend’s house because her family went out of state and it’s not really good for a woman to be totally alone here. Anyway, that night I watched the election coverage, tearing my hair out. She’d gone to sleep already, she used to be not very engaged with politics, aside from being sort of proud of her UFW heritage, but I woke her up telling her that Bush was going to get the presidency and it was going to be a disaster. What I didn’t realize was just how much of a disaster. And that was my introduction to presidential politics!

Being an older millennial meant experiencing that, and when 9/11 happened, two days later I remember sitting in one of my classes unable to concentrate because I knew that this meant war, that I had several friends and acquaintances from high school who’d gone into the military that I was now afraid for, that they would be sent off to fight. I was afraid for an Arab-American classmate too, who’d transferred to NYU for the Fall 2001 (horrible timing that he couldn’t forsee) semester. When Iraq started, a couple of classmates of mine lost their brother/cousin. Because I’m an older millennial I know a few Iraq veterans. So I was quite aware of the impact of Bush’s wars, of the bad economy, etc.

And I voted for Obama hoping for change and progress, which mostly has not happened. Bernie is who we needed on the economy and even if he didn’t mention foreign policy much, I knew he wouldn’t neglect the American people in order to fund more wars and destroy more lives.

Keeping all of that in mind, plus revisiting my teenage memories of the Clinton years, which are rosier than what I now know to be the actual facts, I can’t vote for Hillary!

    • Dosido3

Right, because being in grade school when the planes hit the tower means you don’t know shit. Give it a rest, hilbots. wow! I have two millennials who grew up with me screaming at W on my car radio as I drove them to school.

      • Annaleigh

Exactly, there are some really astute kids who do pick up on this stuff, even if they’re children and don’t process it the way a young adult might!

        • Edwin

I’m still pissed about the Vietnam war from looking at LIFE and TIME magazines during library class in middle school (around 1970-something.) That (and other stuff) made me a late hippie.

    • Edwin

Anyone who followed the primaries has no right to vote Dem. They were cutthroat liars right the way through. They’ll be the same when they govern.

      • Some particularly ignorant and foolish souls want cut-throat liars, under the “our bastard” theory of politics. Never understood it myself, at an emotional level. More or less understand, intellectually, what creates the attitude.

So, Linda Sarsour, who I still respect, even despite this, is urging people who live in swing states to please vote for Hillary because of the vulnerable groups in this country that Trump has targeted.

Someone in the comments section said that Jill Stein is unqualified, now is not the time for protest votes, etc., so this is how I responded:
It’s never the “right time for a protest vote” though, there will always be some excuse why we just have to vote for a Democrat who will do diddly squat for us. They say this every damn election. This time it may actually be true but you can’t blame people for being angry and frustrated that we’re constantly having to defer a better future to stave off some immediate disaster.

I haven’t decided 100% whether to go for Stein or Clinton. I live in California but it seems the Clinton campaign is doing such a bang-up (i.e. crappy) job appealing to voters that I may have to do the unthinkable and vote for her because 1) I am Hispanic and LGBT and 2) I do worry for other marginalized groups in this country who Trump’s campaign has targeted.

But make no mistake, I feel nothing but despair here. If Trump wins, god knows what will happen. If Clinton wins, I worry what Trump supporters will do, and then there is the slow rot of communities like mine and communities around the nation under a Clinton presidency.

We could have had a president who truly cared about marginalized people in this country but no, the party decided it would be a genius idea to run someone like Clinton against Trump. I sincerely fear for the future either way.

P.S., you guys, as to my second paragraph, I know a lot of people here have a much easier time than me going Never Hillary, it’s harder for me because my community *is* one of the ones targeted by Trump and I hope people understand that.

    • panem et circenses

Nobody wins on election day. Whichever rich elitist becomes president we need to keep the pressure on them every step they try to take against us and don’t let them get away with hurting and bombing folks with silence because it might have been worse if the other asshole won. They aren’t our people. They’re the capitalist class we need to always be in a state of self defense against.

    • towerofbabel

A holding action is a very weak action. In fact it is a non action. The abysmal display last night was proof that going along to get along never works. It takes courage to stand for what you know to be right when everyone around you is saying give it up, lie to yourself and pretend you are doing the right thing. No serious change ever happened that way.

    • Ann Watson

From this far distant shore (England) I appreciate and agree with where you are.
At this time emphasis needs to be on the least threatening of the viable options.
But I also take a pragmatic long term view, if someone more radical, Bernie for instance, was elected now, the pressure and expectations on them to accomplish all they promise would be overwhelming and almost impossible to achieve at this time as the support in parliament is not there, which would result in that person being derided for being unable to deliver what they promised.
      Where would that leave us?
Better to let Hillary take the fall for it all and gear up to be ready to demolish them the next time around.

    • Dosido3

Amen, Annaleigh. I totally respect your position. It’s like you’re inside my head.

        • notisaidthepig

Yeah, just very busy with school. Crazy how much of my time it’s taking up. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s a new school and district in a new country. The learning curve is always steep. Also, I’m not used to these type of kids. I spend nearly an hour every day doing administrative stuff for the behavior problems since everything has to be documented. I had a parent on the phone yesterday calling me a liar because I gave her daughter detention and that just couldn’t be true. Sigh.

US Elections: Neither Free nor Fair

Democracy promotion has been a centerpiece of US foreign policy for over half a century since the days when President Woodrow Wilson crafted a new foreign policy that involved active democracy promotion. The implementation of the «beacon on the hill» concept presupposes that the United States would act as a model of excellence for others to follow is analogous to contemporary soft-power democracy promotion efforts. Lecturing on democracy is a distinctive feature of American foreign policy. Does the US really provide an
influential role model for how elections should run in other countries? Is America really a shining example of real democracy? «Forbear to judge, for we are sinners all».

Just A Friendly Reminder That Donald And Hillary Are PalsIn 1982, actor/comedian Andy Kaufman and a professional wrestler named Jerry “The King” Lawler appeared as guests on Late Night with David Letterman together, and an altercation ensued.

Kaufman had been involved in the pro wrestling circuit for some time at that point and had made a show of playing the universally despised misogynistic heel as the defender of the so-called Inter-Gender Championship, where he wrestled women and taunted the crowd while spouting sexist insults. At some point, he ran afoul of Lawler, who injured the offensive Hollywood star’s neck with a piledriver slam before a crowd of cheering fans. The two were then brought onto Letterman’s show for some jolly entertainment, but Lawler grew angry and slapped the neck brace-wearing Kaufman in the face, who let loose a string of words that you cannot say on television and stormed off the set, making headlines the next day.

It was not until 10 years after Kaufman’s death that the entire thing had been staged and that he and Lawler were good friends.

Poll finds 7 percent of voters have ended friendships over the election
    http://www.politico.com/story/2016/09/poll-2016-election-broken-friendships-228846

The polarizing clash between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has brought out the worst in people, even to the point of severing friendships, according to a national Monmouth University poll released Wednesday.

Seven-in-10 registered voters said the presidential election has brought out the worst in people (just 4 percent said this election has brought out the best in people), with a majority of respondents maintaining that the harsh rhetoric in politics is unjustified.

    • Blue Basilisk

I think we can all vouch for that.

    • Dosido3

What about lost friendships over the clash between Bernie and Hillary? Who polled that?

      • MsPythia

No one polls Berners/Demexiters about anything. We’re shut out because there’s so many of us, and they’re doing their best to act like we don’t exist since that might draw attention to the fact that Hillary and the DNC defrauded us out of millions of dollars and a great deal of our time since they rigged it, and Bernie was never, ever going to be allowed to win.

There’s been not a single poll that acts curious over our views, and part of this is also the fact that they’re lying about Jill Stein’s support percentage.

Hillary Clinton’s “Intelligence Surge” Means More Spying

By touting the USA Freedom Act as the type of privacy protections she would adhere to, Clinton has signaled that she will, at best, maintain the status quo – a massive unconstitutional surveillance state. At
worst, the term “surge” seems to indicate even more unconstitutional spying on everyday Americans. In fact, while the USA Freedom Act was touted as a “fix” and was sold as a way to limit bulk surveillance, it actually increased the amount of information the NSA and other federal agencies can obtain.

How Unregulated Dark Money Is Reshaping State Politics
Several governors are using nonprofits to get themselves elected and promote their agendas once in office — without ever having to disclose where the money came from.

    BY ALAN GREENBLATT | SEPTEMBER 29, 2016

But it turns out that the definition of social welfare can be stretched by these groups to serve purely political purposes. The only formal requirement is that political activity not make up the majority of their work. But that rule is almost never enforced. The IRS not only doesn’t ask 501(c)(4)s for the identities of their contributors, but it also isn’t curious about what the groups are up to. That’s why the media has dubbed such operations as “dark money.”

The FBI’s Hillary email probe is looking even more like a coverup
By Paul Sperry September 28, 2016

It’s bad enough that FBI Director James Comey agreed to pass out immunity deals like candy to material witnesses and potential targets of his investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s illegal private email server.

But now we learn that some of them were immunized despite lying to Comey’s investigators.

In the latest bombshell from Congress’ probe into what’s looking more and more like an FBI whitewash (or coverup) of criminal behavior by the Democratic nominee and her aides, the Denver-based tech who destroyed subpoenaed emails from Clinton’s server allegedly lied to FBI agents after he got an immunity deal.

That’s normally a felony. As a federal prosecutor, Comey tossed Martha Stewart in jail for it and helped convict Scooter Libby for it as well. Yet the key Clinton witness still maintained his protection from criminal prosecution.
    http://nypost.com/2016/09/28/the-fbis-hillary-email-probe-is-looking-even-more-like-a-coverup/

I’m glad they’re finally calling it a cover up. I think a lot of us already knew this when Comey shoveled so much BS about “intent” when that’s not what the law says, and when so many other people have gone to jail for doing much less than Hillary did.

CTR has worked against her by being so fucking mean and trollish.

      • MsPythia

If they’re going to those lengths, it proves that she’s even weaker than we imagined. Using NSA tools to destroy the opposition?! That’s considered necessary?! If that shit is real, she must have very little real support and the cheating will have to be done on a massive scale.

        • Dosido3

the tragic thing about Nixon is he wasn’t confident to think he could win without cheating. He won in a landslide. Hillary is Nixon to infinity.

          • Shohanna

How do we know they weren’t rigging the election then? It was after JFK was murdered in the streets. How do we know there wasn’t a coup and they have been in control since? I have a lot of skepticism now and I think I have pretty damn good reasons for it.

How long have they been using Goebbels propaganda? They could have even helped him for all we fucking know. How long has those (NSA and CIA, FBI) been around? Pretty sure there was a coup and we missed it. JFK was targeted for a reason. Pretty sure it had to do with breaking up the banks. Though I could be wrong it’s just a wild guess that connects everything from then until now.

How we have been systematically losing since then with no representation in any of the branches of government.

    • Shohanna

So how reliable is this information?! This could be some kids set up and they are doing some hoax. Seriously, I have been on 4chan before this is just like something immature and stupid they would do. So I need to know how we know this is what it says it is?

      • MsPythia

Hard to know if it’s real or not. However we also know that Brock and CTR has already bought off/taken over the “progressive blogs” so it might be real.

        • Shohanna

There is definitely a chance it could be real. I am not disagreeing with that. Just saying we don’t have anyway to prove it.

    • towerofbabel

If it’s not real, it will be soon.

BREAKING: LEAKED AUDIO Catches Hillary Mocking Bernie Supporters at Fundraiser, Donors Laughing (AUDIO)

It’s tepid stuff. This is the audio for the Intercept article. Slight laughter from the audience and Bernie is not mentioned by name. Still.

    • MsPythia

Patronizing Rich Bitch wants the votes of people she has contempt for. Fuck her.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jCG566TFZI

    • Dosido3

Hillary has only one position – to tack against what her opponent at the time is saying. Also, let’s remember deportations went up under Obama.

      • MsPythia

And Trump is probably coordinating with her campaign as to what will be talked about next. Anything to keep the focus off of actual issues.

        • Dosido3

I hope Donnie hits her with the DNC hack again. I think Trump is awful, but really, as racist and hateful as he is, he represents at least some of the American working class. Hillary the Republican has no qualms about screwing the worker over. none.

  • Shohanna

So I was watching RT on YouTube and seriously, do you guys get his “humor”? I do not find anything this man says funny. In the least. Nothing. His humor reminds me of a republican who thinks they know what is funny. I can’t watch him. Unsubscribe, downvote. BAH

    • Dosido3

Yeah, he’s not my cup of tea either but I appreciate that there people like him calling bullshit on the propaganda…he has his following.

      • Shohanna

Oh it’s great that he is calling the bs and covering it. I just can’t watch him now. His jokes are tasteless and not funny and it detracts from what he is reporting about. At least imo.

Part of the patronizing horseshit from that audio:

Hillary: “And on the other side, there’s just a deep desire to
believe that we can have free college, free healthcare, that what we’ve
done hasn’t gone far enough, and that we just need to, you know, go as
far as, you know, Scandinavia, whatever that means, and half the people
don’t know what that means, but it’s something that they deeply feel. So
as a friend of mine said the other day, I am occupying from the
      center-left to the center-right.”

      https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CtsLDn9XEAAICV-.jpg

      • panem et circenses

The Clintonists have been spinning that she meant “basement dwellers” in a good way. Because that’s always used as a term of endearment.

        • MsPythia

Sure they are — typical for them. Namecalling list so far:

          Blacks #superpredators
          Latinos #tacobowls
          Trumpsters #deplorables
          Berners #basementdwellers
Women her husband wanted to have sex with #bimboeruptions

          • Dosido3

Good grief…does she like anybody? does anybody like her? goddamn.

          • panem et circenses

I’m pretty sure “tacobowls” is just something the Trumpettes made up to pad their grievances, but all the others are valid. She pretty much despises anyone who isn’t a Republican, corporate Democrat or banker/CEO.

          • MsPythia

No — it’s from the DNC leaks:

            Hi everyone,

Attached is a script for a new video we’d like to use to mop up some
more taco bowl engagement, and demonstrate the Trump actually isn’t
            trying.

Let me know if you have any flags and thank you!

          • panem et circenses

Yeah, I saw the email they got “tacobowls” from and it seemed pretty obvious her aid was talking about the Trump Cinco De Mayo “taco bowl” tweet, and not referring to people as taco bowls.

          • MsPythia

I think that they put it that way sounds racist. Even though they were talking about what Trump said.

        • Dosido3

Establishment Media Caught Promoting Fake Russian Story On #TrumpWon Hashtag

There is a specter haunting the establishment media, the specter of a Trump presidency. This idea is apparently so terrifying that no unethical and hypocritical action is too extreme for “mainstream”
journalists to take if it they believe it will damage Trump’s presidential prospects.

Enter the Russian threat. Russian President Vladimir Putin has become this election cycle’s boogeyman with the campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton constantly invoking him as if he is her actual opponent. She invokes Putin, even though Clinton has extensive connections to Putin and his inner circle.

    https://shadowproof.com/2016/09/29/trumpwon-establishment-media-caught-promoting-fake-russian-story/

    • Dosido3

I prefer speculating over the Mysterious 400 lb. Man Sitting on His Bed theory. Putin is too busy corrupting his own business to dip into Hillary’s. I’m sure it doesn’t matter to him who wins or loses. Both our candidates are #deplorable.

The fact remains that the DNC CHEATED BERNIE!!!

    • MsPythia

Hillary is trying to start a fucking war with Russia and Syria.

      • Dosido3

Isn’t everyone? I think our government is just insane. I watched Lone Survivor last night. Upsetting. All I could think about what how does anyone know what the hell is going on over there? UNRELIABILITY, SPINELESSNESS OF THE WESTERN ‘LEFT’

For years and decades, the so-called ‘left’ in the West has been moderately critical of North American (and sometimes even of European) imperialism and neo-colonialism. But whenever some individual or country
rose up and began openly challenging the Empire, most of the Western left-wing intellectuals simply closed their eyes, and refused to offer their full, unconditional support to those who were putting their lives (and often even the existence of their countries) on the line.

A Process That Makes Democracy Look Bad

The “Great Debates” between candidates Clinton and Trump encapsulate what is wrong with the U.S. political process. There’s been little substance; it’s all about personalities and sound-bytes and gotcha. Nevermind the grand issues of our time and how they should be addressed seriously and comprehensively — income inequality, corporate control of media, corporate-dominated electoral funding, global warming, long-term global refugee issues, jobs going overseas in perfect conformity with capitalist principles, Wall Street corruption, race relations, health care, etc.

None of these have easy — or palatable — answers and so the system reverts to entertainment over substance. The Romans got it right way back — it’s all about bread and circuses. We have only the trappings of democracy to pretend that the people are actually deciding anything.

    https://consortiumnews.com/2016/10/01/a-process-that-makes-democracy-look-bad/

    • Dosido3

It’s mindlessly stupid. And character used to matter to a lot of Americans. Of course, some candidates just got really good at hiding their foibles and if they surfaced, that was a scandal that hurt. But now anything goes. Why don’t they just send in Bernie Madoff and Leona Helmsley and call it a day?

    • Democracy?

Here are the apologists at Newsweek hard at work

      http://www.newsweek.com/clinton-didnt-insult-sanders-supporters-basement-dwellers-505124

Clinton later tells the audience that she understands why young voters facing what they believe to be an uncertain future may gravitate to Sanders’ talk of revolution. “There is a sense of disappointment among young people about politics. They’re children of the Great Recession, and they are living in their parents’ basement. They feel that they got their education, and the jobs that are available to them are not at all what they envision for themselves, and they don’t see much of a future…that is a mindset that is really affecting their politics. So if you’re feeling that you are consigned to being a barista or some other job that doesn’t pay a lot and doesn’t have much of a ladder of opportunity attached to it, then the idea that maybe, just maybe you could be part of a political revolution is pretty appealing.

“I think we all should be really understanding of that and try to do the best we can, not to be a wet blanket on idealism; you want people to be idealistic, you want them to set big goals, but to take what we can achieve now and try to present them as big goals,” Clinton says.

        • Dosido3

I went to listen to the audio (finally). It isn’t so bad, but it isn’t good either. I mean, I have two “millennials” at home. They don’t live in a basement. They live in the bedroom they grew up in, ffs. They are both smart, capable people who are still looking for their career jobs and they are not alone. Second, Hillary doesn’t understand revolution? She doesn’t understand why people are fed up with government? That is just self-serving and willful blindness. But she sounds very comfortable talking to her donors. So there’s that.

    • Shohanna

At first that looked dead up like Jamie Lee Curtis. O.o I had to do a double take to make sure it was David Bowie. damn..

  • 17
    • Dosido3

hmmm…MM makes a compelling case. It’s a OMG Trump case but at least he’s not asking people to deny reality and start liking Hillary.

So, NYT is trying to pass this OBVIOUS propaganda piece off as “truth”. Look at the attached “photo” and tell me it hasn’t been “doctored”. We know , without a doubt , what we’re getting with Clinton , she’ll get plenty of co-operation from both sides of the isle in Congress. On the other hand Congress would control Trump , he could only do so much damage . He’s not the war mongering neocon lunatic that Clinton is , that’s a big plus in my book . He’s also against job exportation and these sickening trade agreements . He is a loose cannon , I know , but I’d go with Trump over Clinton if it were up to me.

      • He’s against job exportation?! I don’t think so Kreskin.

What strikes me the most about any election coverage this year is how easily one can rewrite a article with a few word changes and it would fit the opposing candidate.
For instance: Hillary running out of time as controversies pile up
Hillary Clinton’s email/foundation/DNC controversy (pick one) and her self-destructive lack of transparency threaten to drain the Democratic nominee of something she can’t afford: time.

        • Dosido3

          good point…
