A Happy Thanksgiving Day Post…

Nov 24, 2016
713 Views 262

No news, just some Thanksgiving Day Media….

Let’s start with the inimitable Rikki Tikki Tavi. A tale of British Imperialism, at it’s finest, and my favorite cartoon traditionally broadcast on Thanksgiving.

There’s the classic Tex Avery toon, “Jerky Turkey.”

Daffy Duck does his job, for his fellow fowl… Until the Yams. It was the delicious yams.

And, of course, it’s not thanksgiving without Charlie Brown.

    Accounting for Thanksgiving’s Ghosts

What would the United States have looked like had microbes and strength of arms not been on the Plymouth Protestants’ side?

Thanksgiving: A meaningful message or an excuse for a pig-out?

How many Americans, as they sit stuffing themselves today around their Thanksgiving meal tables, insulting the noble principles of Christianity or Islam or Judaism by invoking God’s name and then praising the US Armed Forces for their acts of murder overseas, know the origins of this festivity?

    http://www.pravdareport.com/opinion/columnists/24-11-2016/136252-thanksgiving_message-0/

    • Sure, any message that was once attached to it has gotten lost in the religion of consumerism, but I’ll take the pig-out as a consolation prize.

The Thanksgiving scene in the movie “The Ice Storm” says it best. I would post it, but Youtube scrubbed it. Great movie, btw.

        Christina Ricci saying Grace.

The Ice Storm (1997) Directed by Ang Lee

Christina Ricci as Wendy Hood, Joan Allen as Elena Hood, Tobey Maguire as Paul Hood and Kevin Kline as Ben Hood

Ben: Well, it’s great that we can all be
together. And this Thanksgiving, no, uh, yelling, no hysteria…
especially with your grandpa not here… although we miss him. So, let’s
do it right and Wendy, uh, why don’t you say grace? You used to love to
        say grace, remember?

Wendy: Dear Lord, thank You for this Thanksgiving
holiday, and for all the material possessions that we have and enjoy,
and for letting us white people kill all the lndians and steal their…

        Elena: Wendy…

Wendy: …tribal lands and stuff ourselves like pigs…

        Ben: Okay. Okay…

Wendy: …even though children in Asia are being napalmed…

Ben: Jesus! Enough! All right!… Paul? roll?

        Paul: Thank you…

        • notisaidthepig

          That was a great movie.

This is what I’m doing with my down time. Blathering about Marx.

If you go to the end of this video of David Harvey (1:39:20) you will hear the most succinct recapitulation of Marx’s internal critic of classical-liberal economic theory—the utopian theory at the root of neoliberal ideology. If you are interested, the series on Volume One critiques capitalism from within its own logic–the idealization of atomized transactional social/economic behavior. Volume Two looks at real world problems that arise—like monopoly.

In my opinion, you can find some genuine brilliance in the classical-liberal model of self-regulating economic systems like that of the mythical “invisible hand”. These ideas were definitely revolutionary in the 18th Century. And, they are even more important today as we confront global warming and try to address a problem that is collective and cumulative in nature and needs immediate response.

However, neoliberalism’s blind and self-serving faith in the “invisible hand” is a joke to anyone with open eyes. But this idea seduces the libertarians who swallow the theory whole and are unable to objectively critique it. It is a religion to them. Neoliberals like to talk about “creative destruction” which means letting a process run out of control and then taking advantage of the social and economic collapse that results. Creative destruction is the wicked reality that the neoliberal belief system enables. That is the current economic plan for the world. Only this time, with massive climate change, the destruction will certainly take them down too. So you could say, neoliberalism is a Jonestown kind of religion.

Evolution has an answer to organisms that cannot regulate their response to the larger ecological context–extinction–this we can also learn from theories of self organization. Bottom line: You are fighting a religious belief that most people have bought into, to one degree or another, especially the neoliberal elite. Marx’s theories, without all of the baggage of false critiques, really help to make things clear—especially through David Harvey’s reading.

Class 02 Reading Marx’s Capital Vol I with David Harvey

      • towerofbabel

I also think Adam Smith was right–part right. And the problem is that his ideas are taken as literal truth and radicalized. Which quacks like a religion. But, it is only in the last couple of years that I have tried to understand Marx’s critique. What I like about Harvey is that he is not dogmatic in any way.

      • EdgarHF

I have read both Wealth Of Nations and Capital. Like many canonical works both have amazing insight and utter nonsense. It does seem that the mainstream likes to point out the flaws in Capital ignoring the insightful parts, but at the same time they act like Wealth Of Nations is a holy book. You can learn something from both. To tell the truth most people have not a clue as to what is in either book and base their opinions on that people write in secondary sources about those theories.

HP Enterprise Services Admits To Navy That 134,386 Sailors’ Private Data Was Hacked

On Oct. 27, 2016, the Navy was notified by Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services (HPES) that one of the company’s laptops operated by their employee supporting a Navy contract was reported as compromised.

After analysis by HPES and a continuing Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) investigation, it was determined Nov. 22, 2016, that sensitive information, including the names and Social Security Numbers (SSNs) of 134,386 current and former Sailors were accessed by unknown individuals.

Seems to me it’s also been driving a fair amount of hysteria since the primaries. Perhaps that’s part of maintaining “the apparatus of addiction”.

      • towerofbabel

Precisely. But it’s hard not to notice–they still aren’t talking about reality on the ground for millions of Americans. No, we can’t have that.

        • kreskin

They avoid that topic like the plague .

Facebook’s openness to censorship in China proves it puts profits before democracy

In the wake of the US election, Facebook has been getting a lot of flack for serving up misinformation and bogus news stories. This problem should not surprise us: Facebook is a social media outlet designed to make money on user traffic and attention. Stimulating democracy has never been part of the business model. But given new reports of Facebook’s moves in China to censor freedom of speech, undermining democracy may very well be acceptable under Mark Zuckerberg’s vision.

Google Is Funding a “Ministry of Truth” With Corporate Media Outlets Known for Deadly Deception

No one denies that publishing articles about made-up events, and presenting that as real news, is a terrible thing, which unfortunately gets “shared” without people taking the responsibility of verifying information.

But the censorship crusade being carried out by MSM is about more than actual fake news.

Watch What Happens When Clinton, Trump, and Stein Voters Smoke Weed Together

Cut, the creator of “Grandmas Smoking Weed for the First Time,” recently attempted to show America that political differences are only skin-deep. The YouTube producers made their new video in the hopes of inspiring voters from different political backgrounds to discuss their disagreements in a civilized, unifying manner.

    http://theantimedia.org/trump-clinton-stein-voters-smoke-weed/

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_xoJ0z0L5k

    • SmotPoker

Doesn’t always work. I smoke all the time with a conservative Trump supporter that is also a grower. Our discussions get rather animated as he wants to shout over me, and I won’t let him. I’ll talk all day, but I can shout just as loud as anyone else.

  • SmotPoker

After watching Aretha Franklin slowly strangle the national anthem, I got to see the Lions do the same to the Vikings. Another hell of a game from this version of the Cardiac Cats. Another game they trailed in the 4th quarter, another game Matt Stafford brings them back for the win. 11 tries, 7 wins on the year. Every damn game they have trailed entering the 4th quarter, barring a couple of bullshit calls this team could easily be 9-2 or so.

I’ve seen more talented rosters with the Lions, but these fellas seemed to have two things those teams didn’t, they know how to win, and they have the heart of true lions. Of course these are the Lions we’re talking about, so I’m not rushing out to get in line for Super Bowl tickets just yet….

I’ll settle for having my dinner taste just that much better, and my digestion that much smoother.

    • FaunaAndFlora

Hello my fellow Michigander. I might have to stop calling them the Detroit Lie-Downs. I keep expecting them to lie down. So far, they’re doing pretty good.

      • SmotPoker

Greetings! Well we’ve come to expect them to do so, it’s been their M.O. for all the years I’ve been watching them. Of course, I feel that each game they are walking the razors edge while wearing buttered up ice skates, but damned if they haven’t been finding a way to get it done.

As you know Lions teams of decades past would collapse when it came crunch time, and all the marbles were on the table. This team seems to have discovered HOW TO WIN. Sure the lackluster offense is hell to watch for 56 minutes each game, but I’ll take winning in the last quarter over racing out to 18 point first half leads only to watch it evaporate in another loss.

Are they lucky or are they good? A bit of both I think, and I also believe that you make your own luck through hard work. They need to keep their eyes on the prize, and not get distracted. They still have some difficult games ahead, and cannot take anything for granted, as they could easily finish 7-9. I don’t think they will, but it’s possible. Hell, they are only a couple of breaks either way from being 9-2 or 2-9….

      • SmotPoker

You should join us on the Freep.com game day live blog of the games. I am there each week, and have a bit of a following, it’s a good time. Tell em Uncle Snarky sent ya….

Thanks for the link and the invite. Might just do that sometime.

  • kreskin

I see that Stein is raising A LOT of money and fast … for that recount . Soros ? Clinton PACs ? Not likely that it’s coming from the public .

    • towerofbabel

I don’t really care. Any challenge that involves closer scrutiny is good–coming form any direction.
We need to revamp the electoral process top to bottom, make it transparent, and make recounts easy. We need to get average Americans to demand election reform.

      • kreskin

It’s not necessarily a good thing , I wouldn’t put anything past the powers that be . As you know , they are not at all happy about a Trump presidency , this was not supposed to happen .

Hey, Noti. Hope you are relaxing this weekend. I’m cleaning. That’s how I relax.

          • notisaidthepig

Yeah, I’m not doing much of anything and that’s exactly how I like it. I did some house cleaning yesterday myself. Maybe some more later. Maybe.

          • towerofbabel

I like to clean like a maniac and kick back at the end of the day knowing it will be out of control in a matter of hours, when the dog gets home from camp.

          • notisaidthepig

            Uh….okay. 🙂

          • Edwin

I like to clean when it’s 100% voluntary and I do not feel I’m under the gun.

I used to be a real clean freak, but now I am much more relaxed. Now I just do enough cleaning to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. If you don’t look at the dust it won’t bother you.

          • notisaidthepig

OMG. I’m exactly the same way. Used to be a bit OCD about it even but those days are long gone. I saw a bit of dust the other day and looked away.

          • Edwin

your beard is less grey for it too… mark my words

          • notisaidthepig

Now that I’ve colored it, it’s not grey at all!

          • Edwin

Years ago when I had my own pad it was so spotless people always commented. It was like I sat around watching for a speck of dust to land on something and then I would clean it off right away. I never “cleaned” because I kept a 24/7 vigil against dirt. It would have destroyed me had I continued.

Now I know there is dust behind the cabinet, but I can’t see it so who cares?

          • notisaidthepig

            It’s called wisdom, methinks.

          • Edwin

            yup

          • Edwin

The richest think they’ll be immune.

    • Edwin

Yup. Well, we told everyone Hillary was a bad choice. They told us to shut up and go away. They banished us.

Trump didn’t win. Hillary and the neo-lib Dems lost big.

        • Edwin

Flying dreams? I love them. I have 3 kinds: soaring high, floating along like a dirigible, and simple levitation and movement.

          • towerofbabel

Yes. I usually have them in my happy-power periods. Haven’t had one since last fall. I wonder why?

          • Edwin

Hey. I haven’t had one for a while either. Maybe some nefarious force is blocking the good energy from penetrating our worlds.

OMG. Have you seen the lates from Noam Chomsky via AlJezeera?

    https://twitter.com/mehdirhasan/status/801850604352106497

    • Edwin

I would like to see the interview. 🙁

      • notisaidthepig

The minute that is on that tweet was enough for me.

        • Edwin

For some reason tweet videos never play for me. I have to try in Opera and/or Chrome and it’s too damned much malarkey. :~>

I’ll take your word for it. A lot of lefties are pro-Clinton because bad bad Trump. And I can kind of see where they’re coming from, but the Dems need this thrashing and Clinton would be a gawd awful mistake, one America might not recover from (which is as they say about Trump too.) Nice choices oligarchs. Thanks.

          • In politics, your values are reflected by who you support. No one who supports Clinton can call themselves “left” in any (political) sense of the word, IMO. Chomsky gave up being “left” the minute he advocated supporting a far-right authoritarian for president. It doesn’t matter one whit that he felt he had to, because he falsely perceived the other far-right/authoritarian candidate to be ever so marginally worse.

          • Edwin

            I agree 100%.

          • towerofbabel

Sleep walking into oblivion with Clinton is worse that confronting the Trump nightmare with open eyes.

          • Edwin

Because the American people would have sleep walked through Hillary Clinton like they did 8 years of Bill Clinton and 8 years of Obama. And look where that got us …(the edge of the abyss.)

    • EdgarHF

Chomsky is dead wrong in this case.

    • towerofbabel

Sorry Noam. It’s time to say no to evil and try to restore democracy and the rule of law.

      • kreskin

Hillary Clinton is no less evil .

        • Edwin

I’m tired of the lesser evil crap. How about NO evil?

          • kreskin

Baaaaaaaaaaaaad idea. Don’t ask me why .

            Why?

          • Edwin

          • Edwin

            ?? you changed your comment

            why?

          • panem et circenses

Yeah, that one was more concise. Sorry, lol. I changed it immediately after posting.

          • towerofbabel

I’m seeing continuous rancor being a good thing. Seriously. We don’t need to go back into complacency. That’s why I also support the Greens cracking open the election fraud issue. We need to bring this to a head. It’s time for hardball politics.

          • Edwin

I have no problem with cracking open the election fraud issue. It should have been looked into many years ago. Congress should have started the ball rolling between elections. I worry about who is doing it, who is financing it, why, why now, and what do they hope to gain.

          • towerofbabel

It seems to me that if everyone is cheating, it will be easier to get reform. The god-damned democrats have stood by and let the GOP cheat for years. Now they are cheating too–again. Let’s have it out on this issue. I’ll bet this would transcend the left and right divide, for real Americans that is.

          • Edwin

I bet they’ve both been cheating for years and it has been a matter of who out-cheats who.

        • Edwin

I don’t even accept their proposal.

    • notisaidthepig

Hi, Dosido! Yesterday was nice. Today is a totally chill day. Loving it so far.

      • Dosido3

Hi Pig! Hubs is a little OCD so we have major clean up after hosting. But I’m chilling right now…phew! Oh. I dont do Black Friday. That is very not chill.

        • notisaidthepig

Same here. I don’t go shopping at stores much anyway but NEVER on this weekend. Of course, it was easy because I was never here in the U.S. However, now that I’m here, I feel no desire to go. So same same.

          • Edwin

Korea is wall-to-wall retail. They excel at it. Knock your eye out good.

Anyone who likes shopping will find Seoul a paradise!!!

          • Edwin

I haven’t bought anything for about 3 years. Nothing beyond food and a very few basics I needed. Not kidding.

          • notisaidthepig

I’m practically there myself. I’m often called a “minimalist” by my family. They don’t understand how I could, for example, live without a television for the last 25 years.

          • Edwin

When I went to Prague hoping to live and work, I had 20 Kgs of luggage and discovered that was enough to live; clothes and a few other bits and bobs. I rented a place with pots, dishes, a table and a bed. It was all I needed. (I bought some small towels.)

          • kreskin

Don’t think I’ll last long at my mother in law’s , she’s what you call a strong woman … the domineering type . I’ll probably rent a small furnished apartment .

          • Edwin

Mothers-in-law. Yup. Find yourself a small garret.

          • SmotPoker

I ran away at 6 years old armed with only a stick to which I tied my most prized collection of toys, and a change of clothes. It can be done….

          • kreskin

            Quit cable ? I tried and failed , didn’t last 24 hours . Would help if I had a life .

I won’t have time to get bored and go stir crazy in Russia . Internet access is all I’ll need .

          • towerofbabel

I’m jealous. My two ladies have a tendency to hang on to a lot of stuff for sentimental reasons. I like minimal possessions. When they pile up they become cloying.

          • Edwin

There’s a song about that, but I always forget who did it. Was it Cake?

I’m good at ditching unneeded things. Hate having stuff/clutter around.

          • kreskin

No pesos = no shopping , no problem here.

          • Dosido3

Yep. I had to buy a present for someone recently. Went to the mall and it was just depressing to me. Just more crap to keep. Anted the gift to be thoughtful, not just some damn thing.

          • I find it bothersome/disturbing/upsetting to go into even a single store, like Target or such, now that I’ve stopped being a blind consumer. But it’s always a constant temptation, especially currently, when my income is more than i require for just bills.

          • Edwin

That’s why giving nice food baskets and stuff like that is good.

In Korea, when I had a house warming party, guests came with cleaning products, sponges, bar soap, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry soap, fabric softener and all that kitchen-y/cleaning stuff. I thought it was kind of weird, but I used all of it and didn’t need to buy any of that stuff for ages. Turns out they were great gifts.

It’s one of my stories about the down-to-earthiness of Asia (which I love.)

Words are one thing , implementing them is another.

Lobbyist ? Why no , I’m not a lobbyist , I’m an adviser ! They’ve done it before , to avoid having to register as lobbyists they just change their title . Fucking lawyers , they’ll always find a way .

BREAKING: Army Corps of Engineers shutting down DAPL protest camp due to concerns for public safety

    http://www.kfyrtv.com/content/news/BREAKING-Army-Corps-of-Engineers-shutting-down-DAPL-protest-camp-due-to-concerns-for-public-safety-403060946.html

    • Edwin

If they were concerned for public safety they’d send the pigs home.

    • Edwin
      • panem et circenses

The problem is that they’re trying to stop a very specific section of pipeline from being built under the Missouri River, so it doesn’t do much good if they’re forced to protest miles away from construction. I think this is a response to the veterans’ group coming to the protest on Dec. 4th. They don’t want pictures of in uniform veterans being gassed and beaten by cops all over the national news.

        • Edwin

How would it look it the Army Corps of Engineers were beating up the regular army guys/gals and the tax-payers funded the brawl between the two for the benefit of an oil company. Not very good optics.

    • cathyx

How big is the ‘army’ of the Army corps of Engineers?

      • Edwin

And aren’t they paid for by you? Why are they working for an oil company?

  • SmotPoker

Congress is ever so eager to send our young to war in far off lands. I say we institute a new rule called the Edward Dickinson Baker Act in honor of the only sitting US Senator to have ever died in a military engagement. His famous call to arms on August 1, 1861. “We will rally the people, the loyal people, of the whole country,” he exclaimed, “they will pour forth their treasure, their money, their men, without stint, without measure.”

His died in 1861 in the Battle of Ball’s Bluff.

*Historical note – The war started in 1861. It didn’t end until 1865. This man died early in the process without ever knowing the final outcome, and the tragedies that would occur before it was settled.

You want to declare war? Fine, as long as your asses are on the first plane to the war. You call yourselves leaders? Lead. We’ll see how many wars we get ourselves into then….

Look up Edward Dickinson Baker. He was a remarkable man.
