          • panem et circenses

I have a friend whose grandparents were imprisoned for attempting to flee to the US, though they aren’t so quick to dismiss Castro as simply an evil dictator. That type of story isn’t uncommon. Cuba under Castro was a very complex and often reactionary environment and it’s understandable that many of those directly effected hold strong emotional views one way or the other.

          • notisaidthepig

Exactly. It’s always a bit different when you are directly affected.

          • panem et circenses

Castro is far from anything approaching a great revolutionary leader, but context must be taken into account. The country was starved by US military and economic imperialist blockades after their puppet dictator was overthrown, so there was never any hope of an equitable society, but he managed to hold those imperialist forces off for 60 years while implementing some very good institutions, while also being an absolute shit ML authoritarian in other areas, but who is there to point to in the 20th Century who wasn’t mostly a complete bastard? Do you feel the same hatred for JFK or Batista as you do for Castro?

Kee-Rist! My big cat Lenny is being a huge PITA today. It started at 2:00am when much to his horror he discovered there wasn’t a morsel of food in his dish, which led him directly over to me (I was asleep, but I have no doubt he was marching at me directly without pause) to let me know of his grievance, the hour of the night be damned!

He jumped up on me, and just stood there. I can’t prove it, but I’m pretty sure he’s aware that the pressure from 4 separate paws is far more pressure, and much more annoying than simply laying on me with his great weight. I brushed him down, he jumped back on. The game, it is afoot! He has me trained well, so I stumbled off the couch, and over to his dish to fill it with food, then went back to sleep.

Since then he’s spent the day pretty much right up my ass, demanding to lounge across my lap as he see’s fit, never mind that he was making my leg numb. He’s just refusing to go elsewhere. Of course, me being the old softie that I am, I let it happen. He’s old, he’s my last cowboy standing from the original bunch of Leo, Lenny, Baby Girl, Tazzie, and Coco. He’s outlived them all, so I give him whatever he wants as I can’t bring myself to deny him anything at his age. He’s perfectly healthy today, but we all know how quick that can change in animals.

The bastard owns me, and he knows it. That’s the part that is annoying. Pwned by a cat. Oh the humiliation….

Still, I love the little monster.

I had no idea about the nostril thing until it was pointed out to me by my mother whom could tell when I was in a rage. She’d be scolding me for something, and I’d sit there simmering away, and she’d tell me not to flare my nostrils at her like a bull. I was like, I can’t help it. I ain’t doing it on purpose….

        It’s my lifelong tell I guess….

          • SmotPoker

Something’s Fishy About Jill Stein’s Recount Money Machine

Is it possible Jill Stein’s election recount scheme is secretly funded by the elite? It sure looks like somebody is pumping millions of dollars into the effort to overturn the election, and it ain’t Stein supporters.

    http://anotherdayintheempire.com/somethings-fishy-aboutjill-steins-recount-money-machine/

    • towerofbabel

The only thing fishy is not counting the vote and not recounting them as many time as necessary to know what happened. What is wrong with recounting any election?

      • kreskin

What makes you think that they are above pulling some shenanigans to get Clinton in the White House ?

        • towerofbabel

If it is not transparent this country will explode. And that might just be a good thing. Why the fuck do we have to run elections in the dark like some two bit dictatorship? Why do we have the media spinning the fucking polls and results? Why do we have black boxes? Why is it so hard to vote? Lets have the fight and maybe Americans will wake the fuck up.

If they can’t prove Trump cheated beyond a shadow of a doubt it would be incendiary to change the outcome. I also think there is an equal chance that the DNC will be exposed in some way. Let it rip. I for one, am sick of these fraudulent elections. I also doubt that Trump cheated. The pattern in rust-belt states is too consistent.

          • kreskin

I hear you Tower , but I would not put anything past them . Like I said the other day , this was not supposed to happen , the powers that be are not at all happy about it.

          • towerofbabel

I hate Trump but if they try to steal an honest Trump win I will fight them. We shouldn’t even be having this discussion. Both parties are rotten to the core. We deserve better.

          • kreskin

This election , these two candidates , it’s a sign of the times in this country . Not good .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H06_0ApzkzY

          • towerofbabel

I respect your feelings on this.
            (And, Fogerty was great.)

          • kreskin

            Ditto .

        • FaunaAndFlora

Michigan just finished a recount. Clinton gained some three thousand votes but Trump still won by ten thousand. Even if the outcomes in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are switched to Clinton, she still won’t have enough electoral votes to win the presidency without Michigan. The only thing that would change is that neither would Trump, meaning it would be left up to the Republican-controlled House to choose a president.

      • 17

I don’t have a problem with anyone wanting a recount. But WHO is it, and why do they want it? I’m not buying the line that Jill’s supporters are funding this.

        • towerofbabel

I don’t care who is supporting it. I care whether or not it is transparent.

          • Edwin

I care who is funding it. Rule #1 is always follow the money.

          • towerofbabel

If you know who is funding it then yes, scrutinize it more for that reason. But if we make the argument that someone else doesn’t have to right to recount the vote, even the rotten GOP or the corrupt DNC, where will we be? It will be used against us when we want to verify the vote that the DNC rigged, or the GOP. Again, it’s the transparency that matters. If it’s not transparent it will not verify anything–especially in this explosive situation.

          • Edwin

Clintons are in on it. They just want to make sure it is fair, that’s all.

          • Edwin

I have never said I am against it. I have said I question the motives, the funding and the players.

    • kreskin

Stinks alright . Soros ? Clinton PACS ? The amount of money she took in at the speed it came in … that ain’t public money from Joe or Josephine average . I brought this up a couple days ago .

      • towerofbabel

If they were raising money to burn the ballots, I would have a problem with it. If it’s just to recount them, and every interested party can participate, then there is zero harm in doing it. It’s healthy.

There are a lot of strong feelings being stirred up by Castro’s death, especially NotI’s which are understandable. But, because the US played such a despicable role in the creating and sustaining the conflict, I don’t know how to view Castro. I would like to see our country live up to its much vaunted “democratic values” and look critically at what happened.

    • notisaidthepig

      Hi, Tower.

I wanted to respond to your comment down below about my parents and their history in Cuba. But, honestly, it’s all so exhausting.

It feels like I’ve spent my entire life explaining to “liberals” who love Castro for sticking it to the U.S. that, actually, Castro was a repressive son of a bitch that killed thousands of his own people without due process. I am able to take a step back and see the other side of Castro but it’s always on me to make others aware of the negative side. Everyone’s always going on about how wonderful Cuba is with universal health care blah, blah, blah. But what about quality of life? Anyways, I’m tired of talking about Castro (it’s all I’ve done today with family and friends).

And, as always, I hope he’s roasting eternally.

    • notisaidthepig

Here are a few bits that I noticed about this article:

“US-generated ruckus about Cuban political prisoners and
the dearth of freedom of the press and of expression necessarily
becomes less convincing in light of the US’ own history of assassinating
anti-establishment characters and its efforts to institutionalise
censorship, as in the cases of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden.”

“To be sure, Castro’s Cuba was never a paragon of freedom of speech or
related rights. When I visited for a month in 2006, some of the
government detractors with whom I spoke would only pronounce Castro’s
      name in a whisper.”

“Although Cuba does not qualify as an objectively free society, it’s
important to recall that curtailments to Cuban freedom do not occur in a
vacuum. Instead, they occur on an exposed island that has, for the
duration of its contemporary history, resided in imperial crosshairs.”

The article seems to acknowledge “problems” with Castro but then glosses over them. Again, it’s easy to do when you’re not the one at the receiving end.

      • towerofbabel

Fair enough. I will need to know a lot more to really understand this. I don’t want to diminish what you parents went through.

        • notisaidthepig

With Castro you were either for him or against him and being against him meant you could be killed. There was no middle ground. When you see the world in black and white, then you have a problem.

          • towerofbabel

Sounds familiar. My perspective comes from wanting to believe that THIS country lives up to it’s potential and doesn’t indulge in self deception. I am not denying Castro’s despotism. I’m questioning ours.

          • notisaidthepig

Oh, the sad truth I have to live with is that America created Castro. No one is innocent here.

German Economist & Politician: ‘Stop Copying America’s Decline! Leave NATO!’

Sahra Wagenknecht, Vice President of the German parliament’s Leftist Party, said in Parliament on Wednesday November 23rd, that Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel, could very possibly become
replaced by a politician similar to U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump or even farther to the right (something dreaded by many in Germany and especially abroad), unless Germany quickly stops copying America and
ultimately leaves NATO, which she says is far more of a danger to Germans than it’s any real protection of the German people.

    http://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2016/11/26/german-economist-politician-stop-copying-america-decline-leave-nato.html

    • towerofbabel

She’s a leftist too. Interesting. This relates to Sanjay Reddy’s piece and the need for national economic theories to offset the effects of globalization. In my opinion we have to avoid ideologies that over simplify the economy, i.e.: global versus the nation state, etc. The problematic issues related to social and political governance and the economy are three dimensional and multi-scaled in democracies–or should be.

US Tries to Assassinate Iraqi Prime Minister in Missile Attack

In a statement released on Friday, the PMU said that the attack took place on Thursday and left several people injured.

An investigative committee has been set up to probe the incident, with its examination of the missile wreckage showing that the laser-guided rocket had not been fired by the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group, the statement read.

It also added that the missile landed one meter and a half from the PMU commanders’ tent while a drone belonging to the US-led coalition was up in the sky.

Is this for real? I can’t find it anywhere else.

      • 17

I don’t know. I’ll try to keep an eye on it. If we hear that there’s an investigation into “an accidental strike”, we’ll know. We’ll also know that it wasn’t “an accident”.

  • towerofbabel

The piece by economist Sanja Reddy is important. We need new economic ideas and we have to break through the religious orthodoxy that has paralyzed economic and social thinking. Will Trump’s win trigger that? Let’s hope so.

On Tulsi Gabbard. What exactly did she do wrong? Oh, she called out the NeoCons, NeoLibs, and MSM for building a wall of propaganda to ensure WWIII. Unless I missed something, in her meeting with Trump she attempted to dissuade him from escalating in Syria. She was right on this. Good for her.

    • notisaidthepig

Let The Madness Begin has a video exposing some of her weaknesses. Let me see if I can get it for you (see below). She may have done stuff to be “politically expedient” instead of actually standing up for what is right. Prime example might be the way she finally supported marriage equality in 2012 when she was running for Congress.

Officials in the Obama administration threw cold water on the effort to recount votes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania on Friday.

The effort was spearheaded by Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who echoed arguments that Russia may have hacked US voting machines to interfere with the outcome of the November 8 election.

A statement from the Obama administration cited by The New York Times acknowledged that the Kremlin likely expected the hacking of some Democratic Party entities in the run-up to Election Day to raise questions about the voting process and the legitimacy of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory.

“Nevertheless, we stand behind our election results, which accurately reflect the will of the American people,” the statement read.

The Russians ? You too ? C’mon Stein.

    • panem et circenses

Voting machines are mostly offline. Is the theory that Russia activated thousands of sleeper agents around the country that somehow went undetected by those administrating and watching the polls?
