Your Weekend of Weekends.

UnkaWillbur - May 26, 2017

Here' some links to nosh on, to start of your weekend. I hope everyone's weekend is great; me, myself, I'm planning on jumping out of a perfectly…

  • Your Song of the Day:

God, I had such a crush on Kiki Dee, as a young man.

    • 17

Good tune. Ditto on the boyhood crush.

        • Damnit! She looked pretty good in slacks! 😛

          • 17

Yes. That’s what did it. And the “girl next door” look.

  • notisaidthepig

Enjoy your time off, Unka! And, of course, a merry Xmas to you and yours.

    • Happy holidays!

Not really time off, as such. I’m still working today, just remotely. And I’ll probably think about work even when I’m not: I’m on a tight schedule with my current contract, delivery on the 6th.

      • towerofbabel

We have a big interview on the 11th. We just finished one that we have a good shot at, last Tuesday. We hear next week. So, no rest for the weary. It’s good to be busy, but the deadlines take their toll.

      • notisaidthepig

I hear you as I’m never far from thinking about my classes and students. Good luck with your latest project!

  • Dosido3

Merry Christmas, Festivus or whatever you celebrate, fellow exiles! Thank you, Unka, 17 and everyone so much for helping me get through this horrible election year. Here’s to surviving the next four years together with our sanity intact. Hug the ones you care about and send positive thoughts to the clueless.

    Peace, Dosido

    • 17

      Back atcha 😉

    • We’ll all hang together, as the saying goes! Hopefully it will be metaphorically!

      😀

      • kreskin

        LOL . I hope so too .

      • 17

Do they not understand that I don’t do anything around here?

    • oodaloop

Well said, Dosido3. Thanks to Unka, 17 and all the Exiles. I hope each of you can take a break from all the stress and just enjoy life and loved ones while we can. Happy holidays to you!

      • notisaidthepig

        Right back at you. Peace.

Fresno CA Taxpayers Forced to Pay $2.2 Million Settlement to Family of Man Executed by Police

Supposedly, along with the settlement that taxpayers will be forced to finance, the Fresno Police Department will be explaining to the cops working there what the word imminent actually means and making other
“minor changes” within their use of force policies. That includes teaching cops to assess whether someone needs to be shot in the back while they are already lying on the ground unable to move.

    http://www.copblock.org/169420/fresno-ca-taxpayers-pay-settlement-family-man-executed-police/

    • towerofbabel

The taxpayers should pay for what they let the cops get away with.

      • 17

If I’m to be held responsible for what they do, then I should have the right to take WHATEVER action I deem necessary to prevent them from causing harm or punish them, up to and including “deadly force”.

As I taxpayer I have NO control over law enforcement, and should not be footing the bill.

        • towerofbabel

The taxpayers need to be held accountable for what is done in their name with their money. That’s true for the wars too.

  • towerofbabel

The Democratic Party is a bric–a–brac assemblage of identity politics disintegrating before our eyes. It is a false-façade masking the destruction of the democracy by the fascist machine behind American oligarchic power. Trump is the real face of this power—arrogant, ignorant and disconnected. Here Giroux’s incisiveness is on display:

“As the consolidation of power by the corporate and financial elite empties politics of any substance, the political realm merges elements of Monty Python, Kafka, and Aldus Huxley.”

How Compulsive Privacy Has Lead to Atrocious Oppression

As humans we’ve become indoctrinated to keep our desires private. The obsession with privacy has induced a hysteria wherein we spread war like fever and ascend authority onto a pedestal from which we worship
it. This practice has become the norm of civilized social and political structures. The following is a breakdown of the problem.

Online surveillance will give Trump a lot of information on us. Here’s what you can do to resist

Donald Trump is about to have a lot of information on us. When he assumes the US presidency in a few weeks, he will oversee two separate but deeply interconnected surveillance apparatuses—which means that even Americans who typically take a blasé attitude toward privacy may be about to take it a lot more seriously.

    http://qz.com/870681/online-surveillance-will-give-trump-a-lot-of-information-on-us-heres-what-you-can-do-to-resist/

    • notisaidthepig

Another long article! Here’s where I’m at:

“Apparently, WikiLeak’s Julian Assange was too busy tweeting conspiracy theories about Clinton’s health to responsibly remove details like phone, credit card, or social security numbers—or even details of a staffer’s suicide attempt.”

I’m a little surprised and disappointed at this jab at Wikileaks. Doesn’t this person know that Wikileaks maintains the integrity of what they publish. They don’t alter the information in any way. To use Assange’s word, it’s “pristine.” They do this so there is no accusation of tampering or altering the data in order to undermine its content.

I know this. Seems like someone writing about online surveillance should know it as well instead of taking jabs or casting aspersions.

“A panopticon for the 21st century

The panopticon is an instructive though imperfect metaphor for our present condition. Jeremy Bentham, the 18th- and 19th-century British utilitarian philosopher, first imagined the panopticon as a watchtower in the middle of a circular courtyard, surrounded by prison cells. The prisoners cannot see the guards in the central watchtower, but the guards can peer into the cells. Since the prisoners would never know when or if they were being watched, Bentham theorized, they would act as if they are being watched all the time.”

The US is now asking foreign visitors to provide their social media accounts for inspection

The US government this week started asking some foreign visitors to provide their social media account information before entering the country. The addition, which the Department of Homeland Security proposed in June and had open for comment until Aug. 22, went live Dec. 20, according to a Politico report. Rights groups and technology companies had complained that the plan could constitute a violation of privacy.

This is good but two things: Why is Bernays always treated deferentially? We don’t treat Goebbels that way.
Second, in my opinion it is the overarching–unquestioned–ideology that most dominates human behavior and creates the norms of society. The people behind the curtain also hold these same ideas to some extent, often vehemently because it serves their interests. Only when the ideological image ceases to correspond with reality are the more overt forms of propaganda necessary to keep a social structure propped up. That’s where we are today, but the propaganda is failing to a large extent.

Good morning. It’s Christmas Eve Day!

    • Edwin

      Morning.

It’s Christmas Eve eve here. Nothing will happen tonight or tomorrow, so big whoop. (Fine with me.)

Hope you have a pleasant time with your family.

      • notisaidthepig

Thank you. I’m afraid my mom seems to be taking a turn for the worse. Her schizophrenia is….acting up….as it does. Last night after dinner, I noticed it. These things have a kind of cycle and the next few days promise to be difficult ones. Oh, well. I’ll hope for the best.

        • Edwin

I’m sorry to hear that. It will make things difficult and rather trying for you. Not much fun, I’m afraid. I hope you at least have some pleasant times visiting your family.

I’m off to bed now. See you later.

          • notisaidthepig

Thanks again. Have a good rest.

        • Shaykayvah

My mother had schizophrenia, it can be very scary. Just love her.

          • notisaidthepig

            That’s what I try to do! 😉

        • I can sympathize. My 90 year-old Great Aunt has full-blown dementia. Hallucinations, violent acting out, the whole thing.

  • Shaykayvah

I’m not religious whatsoever, but this time of the year brings up a lot of my past. I so miss the members of my family I have lost and my sisters who live in Colorado. My sister sent me some pictures in a birthday card (analog Pictures, no less), of the four of us kids. There was an absolutely beautiful picture of my late brother, and I just lost it. we were very close in age and were best friends growing up, we lost him ten years ago. We were both oddballs, and understood each other. I lost my mother when I was thirteen, she was a very troubled woman and it didn’t end pretty. My memories of her have faded in the last 46 years, but I still find myself wondering what my life would have been like had she survived. My father passed away 20 years to the day of my mother, he taught me so much, it took me a long time to realize that. My two sisters and I do not see each other near enough, and this time of the reminds me that we all won’t be around forever, and that I have to find a way to get out and see them. Hold on to your people, they are the real gift.
I would also like to thank all of you on this site for helping me feel a little less of an outcast, it is good to know there are others that feel as I do. Thank you for letting me spout.
    Happy Holidays all.
    Peace.
    Tim

    • notisaidthepig

      (((hugs Tim)))

Yeah, the holidays do have that effect regardless of whether you are a religious person or not. I agree wholeheartedly with you: it’s about people. And by “it” I mean Life. Nothing else really matters except the connections we make. There don’t even need to be a lot of connections, just some strong ones. Sorry to hear about all your losses. I hope you get the chance to see your sisters soon. I have one (and three brothers) and she’s awesome!

      • Shaykayvah

Thanks Noti, I’m just feeling a little verklempt this morning, now off to work.

        • It’s the time of year: Less sunlight, even when it’s not “wintry” weather.

    • You are, indeed, “One of Us” and I’m certainly happy to have you here! 😀

      • Shaykayvah

Thanks Unk, it’s great to be here. Peace, my friend.

    • Chunga

I am indeed in Charlotte and trying to stay under the radar of government officials. I don’t know how my brother does it. I wish my mom was in a nursing home in NV but that’s impossible (and a very long story). Charlotte is one of the big cities though and somewhat civilized. I know people all over the state and it’s a different world out there. Let’s not talk about the folks up in Bryson City or Sylva!

      • towerofbabel

North Carolina really confuses me. I have been there a number of times, met very nice people, but there is a dark side to everything, given the bigotry and class system.

        • notisaidthepig

Very well put. Mom is…okay. Thanks for asking! All the best to you and your loved ones…always!

Unka, can you tell me how you got rid of our “Mod” tags? I can change it (at another site) but the grey box stays no matter what character I insert (even a blank space). It’s not a big deal, but I like the absence of a tag like we have here.

    • Just entered a space. They’re still there, just not as visible! 😀

      • 17

When I enter just a space, I still end up with a grey box though.

        • Hmm. I dunno. That’s all I did!

Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act.

Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act is a bipartisan bill, introduced to the 114th United States Congress to curb first amendment rights under the guise of stopping propaganda and disinformation. The bill was initially titled as the Countering Information Warfare Act.

The bipartisan legislation was written in March 2016 by U.S. Senators Republican Rob Portman and Democrat Chris Murphy. It was additionally introduced in the United States House of Representatives in a bipartisan fashion; co-sponsors included Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger and Democrat Ted Lieu.

My kid brothers find it to be an endless source of amusement that I’m in my 50’s. I used to be a pretty happening cat. One is in a wheelchair, and one has a house full of fucking kids. I’m thinking I’m still better off than either of them.

RIP George Michael. I wasn’t a huge fan, but I can recognize talent when I could hear it back in the day. To hell with those that were icked out because of his sexuality. Deal with it you mooks, I bet every single one of you has a kink/fetish/preference that would embarrass you to no end if it were to be revealed to the world.

Life shouldn’t have to be so hard. All the advances we’ve made, and yet we’re barely above the poop flinging apes we keep in cages at zoos.

          • Yeah, same here: Not a fan, but talent is talent.

In Historic Decision, Canada Declares Internet Access a Fundamental Right for All
National telecom agency promises to connect all Canadians, from Quebec to Yukon, to high-speed broadband

In what is being described as a “historic” decision that will have a
significant impact, particularly on the lives of those living in rural
and First Nations communities, Canada’s telecom agency on Wednesday
issued a new rule declaring high-speed internet a basic service “necessary to the quality of life” of all Canadians..

Those Ambassadors should have told him to fuck off, they’ll see him after the holidays. Once he started with the bitch session they should have turned around, and walked out on his fucking ass. Fuck Bibi, indeed.

Nice little Apartheid state you got there, be a shame if something were to happen to it….

    • towerofbabel

      Bibi is arrogant.

    • kreskin

Yahoooo has got some nerve , on the other hand our congressmen and women are more than happy to bow down to him and kiss his ass. How dare the UN tell him to stop stealing land ? It’s outrageous ! This is Obama’s doing !

Sounds like that asshole has got a friend in Trump .

      • Chunga

Yea I was thinking Trump, Bibi and Putin could get together for an international circle jerk, a new kind of detente.

    • kreskin

Endearing himself to the world , as usual.

India, a nation of starving citizens, shitty infrastructure, and very few toilets has decided to blow $530 million on a stupid statue. Priorities man, priorities. No wonder things are so fucked up over there, their leaders are fucking them as hard as ours are here in the Western world. $530 million….man, that’s a lot of toilets.
