.The 5 Biggest Lies in Trump’s Speech to Congress

While some suggested that Trump’s speech was more “optimistic” than usual, the U.S. president stayed true to his fear mongering “alternative facts.”

While many pundits suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday was an attempt to change the “tone” of the opening months of his presidency, he clearly was unable to veer from delivering a near-constant barrage of lies and half-truths.

Many news organizations offered live fact-checking of Trump’s first major address to Congress and the Center for American Progress — a pro-Clinton Democratic think-tank — claimed that Trump “told a whopping 51 lies in his 61-minute address.”

We sifted through the pile to pick out some of Trump’s biggest whoppers.

    .Same Trump, New Shine

Donald Trump’s — or perhaps more accurately, Steve Bannon’s — first address to Congress was a master class in doing what Trump does best: combining right-wing populist rhetoric with a mishmash of falsehoods, scapegoating, and brazen corporatism.

Ugh. I sat for listened to DT for a few minutes with my face in my hands. It was dreadful. But I disagree with this conclusion:
“If Trump’s address to Congress is any indication, he’s going to continue attempting to present himself as a genuine populist while pursuing his other, more awful goals — which has always been his most successful strategy. It’s up to the Left to show how hollow this image really is.”

How can the Left do this if they are just as corrupt, just as fascist, just as hideous as the Right? It is up to the press do this…oh, but how can they if they have shown themselves to be utterly devoid of credibility?

We’re screwed. The only ones who can show how hollow this image is, is ourselves. We must educate each other – kindly and gently – with facts and evidence.

      • EdgarHF

“How can the Left do this if they are just as corrupt, just as fascist, just as hideous as the Right? ”

Because they are not really the left?

        • 17

Exactly. In fact, I don’t think there really IS a left or right anymore. It’s us on the bottom versus them on the top. Eat the fucking rich, or starve.

          • FaunaAndFlora

That’s why those on the top use “wedge issues” to keep the rest of us divided and conquered.

          • thud

“Eggs” Ackely! I’ve chatted with some at BB.com and found that we actually share some values. But it’s vereboten for us to agree on goals. Our methods to get there still need a bit of work. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4f60f4a9d9c5b2de9c0d02711437ae486587f36f224d2f33ebb724f681cb0087.png

            Hey Thud. How’s it going?

            Five hammer day. You?

Hanging in there. Lost power tonight. Love my generator! Now it’s snowing. About time we had some normal weather for this time of year. 😉

          • thud

We had romperstomper storms blast thru here last night. First tornado here since 1950. No shit baseball size hail! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/69ace05f530f469008af122ec4e97b19f3667ccb20d7c83dfe1cd424d3408e34.jpg

          • FaunaAndFlora

Wow! That’s one hell of a piece of hail.

          • thud

First tornado in Feb. that is. back to early spring in a couple of days.

          • FaunaAndFlora

            You’re in Illinois?

          • thud

            Yup.

          • FaunaAndFlora

Yeah, you got hit today. Storm seems to have blown out by the time it got to Michigan. We had a little thunder and lightning last night, and some wind here today, but nothing like what you got. Still lost power though. Not sure why.

        • Dosido3

Oh. I almost had hope there. I meant the Professional “Left”…

        • thud

Politics is not bipolar. Convene parliament and form coalitions. It ain’t perfect but it beats hell outa the shit the US gots now.

    • thud

Well,it’s really HARD to make a good speech when you represent libertarians, authoritarians, religious fundamentalists and the Klan. But maybe it’s easier when nobody rational expects anything but shit out of you anyway.

South China Sea: We Want the Problem, Now You Sort It Out

First the Golan Heights, now the South China Sea – The United States used to patrol this regularly to ensure “freedom of navigation” for all the nations who claim part (or all) of the sea and the islands within it. Now it is being reported that it has called its aircraft carriers home and left the competing states to sort it out for themselves: hoping, of course, that they won’t.

    • Dosido3

well, damned if you do, damned if you don’t…

      • thud

I’m down the damned if you don’t if that means not extending US power up to ANY other countries mutually confirmed limits. Crank the shit back down.

    .Israel’s Anti-Semitism Smears Backfire

Israel has often succeeded in silencing criticism of its treatment of Palestinians by calling critics anti-Semites and scaring politicians into canceling public events, but the tactic is now starting to backfire, writes retired U.S. diplomat Ann Wright.
