It’s not like Unka to leave us here unattended. I have to work all weekend but I will drop by now and then.

        • Edwin

I’m sure we’ll be fine. 17 might be around to help smooth the way. ^_^

          • towerofbabel

You seem sure of yourself. We could skew the conversation in any direction we want, I guess.
            But, back to work.

    President Obama

Excellent, Unka. Enjoy the hike. I went stargazing last night at Red Rock Canyon. So cool.

    • Staring at the universe, unimpeded, is the closest thing I ever get to “religious.” Sycamore Canyon, where the trail I was hiking is located, is in one of those rare spots in the US that’s not polluted by man-made light. So it’s like a cathedral, for me.

      http://d3a5ak6v9sb99l.cloudfront.net/content/advances/2/6/e1600377/F3.large.jpg

      • Edwin

I’ve never been anywhere like that. Rural Ontario is not too bad, but still to close to light pollution and it is often very humid. I’d love to go to the desert at least once, somewhere far from any city, and see the night sky.

        • Well, Sycamore Canyon is more like a 5000ft elevation pine forest, but the desert at night is amazing. It’s like… Well, it’s like nothing else…

          But bring plenty of water!

San Antonio Police Officer Matthew Luckhurst Fired for Trying to Feed Shit Sandwich to Homeless Man

Officer Matthew Luckhurst of the San Antonio Police Department has been placed on indefinite suspension as the result of an incident in May. Luckhurst had bragged to another cop that he had placed feces inside
bread and put it in a styrofoam container next to a sleeping homeless man, hoping he would eat it. That unnamed officer fortunately had some decency and told Officer Luckhurst to go back and throw the shit
sandwich away. He then reported the incident to the San Antonio Police Dept.’s Internal Affairs Bureau in July.

**In a just world, this asshole, his wife, and their newborn baby would be penniless, sleeping in the gutter with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and eating nothing but shit sandwiches for the rest of their lives.**

      All Cops Are Bastards.

      • kreskin

Fuck that noise , it’s not true .

        • panem et circenses

It’s their job description. They’re the fist of state violence. Their job is to protect property above people, and extract as much money as they can from the poor. That’s why most of them have quotas and nearly every “crime” is accompanied by large fines.

          https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/32db043b87a444cf55753f9edc016254fe6fa74785812fc214e098af0cfe0def.jpg

        • panem et circenses
        • Shohanna

When that “good” cop does NOT turn in his peers, does NOT cross the blue line to stand up for right, justice and honor? That taints him, that makes him part of the problem. That makes him BAD cop.

So long as we have BAD cops those good cops are just as bad for NOT turning them in. That means they are BAD TOO.

There are no good cops until they CHANGE that status quo!! When I see cops CONVICTED of the cold, calculated murder they DID then we can discuss good cops. Until then, you won’t convince me of it.

        • Shohanna

Not only that but police were first created to chase down and murder slaves who escaped. Think about that a minute. Let it sink in. The ONLY reason we have cops? Left over from slavery!

Some Interesting radical critiques of The New Jim Crow, for anyone who’s read the book or is interested. The article was originally published in People of Color Organize!, but the link is broken now.

The New Jim Crow discredited, advocates demand revision

    https://libcom.org/news/new-jim-crow-discredited-advocates-demand-revision-03022013

    http://philpapers.org/archive/OSEBOM

    From Osel’s critique:

“According to Alexander’s history, there is no Malcolm X or George Jackson, no
Frantz Fanon, no Richard Wright, no Eldridge Cleaver, no Angela Davis, no Huey P.
Newton, no Bobby Seale, no Black Panther Party, no Black Power Movement, no
self-determination, no prison-struggles, no political prisoners. Suspiciously there is almost no 1960’s, no 1970’s, no Black History, no Black Criticism, no Black Radicalism, no radicalism, no class struggle. There is no serious or sustained critique of colonialism, imperialism or capitalism. There is no discussion of international law, implicit racism, of privileged ignorance or prosperity, no acknowledgment that the likely champions of the text are the direct and continued benefactors of the “caste system” they so deplore. There is no connection to any of this. None.”

That’s not to say that there isn’t a lot of value to be taken away from the book, but just that a book about black oppression that doesn’t even mention capitalism or the black socialist radicals behind the struggle can fairly be called “whitewashed” in order to appeal to a larger liberal middle-class audience.

ISIS Calls For β€œSlaughter Of Americans” On Election Day

One day after US intelligence sources warned that Al-Qaeda may be preparing for potential terrorist attacks in New York, Texas and Virginia, on Saturday the Islamic State called for the β€œslaughter” of U.S. voters on
Election Day and demanded that Muslims not participate in the democratic process because β€œthere is no difference between the Republican and Democratic parties in their β€œpolicies against Islam and Muslims.”

  • Blue Basilisk

This post came across my tumblr dash this morning and it really pissed me off: http://gunwildversuseverything.tumblr.com/post/152814095551/bonus-quote-one-of-the-penalties-of-refusing-to

You are not doing good by voting for the lesser evil, you fucking buffoons. You are working against any kind of common good because you are empowering this “lesser” evil by giving it power and a platform it did not previously have! If you’re so scared of Trump you want to go the lesser evil route, then fucking own up to it. Don’t try to fool yourself into thinking you’re doing something good, because you’re not.

    • towerofbabel

Every time I see anti-Trump propaganda it makes me livid because it is masking an equally odious non-choice.
I’m going to have to use this. Thanks.

      • Blue Basilisk

What raises my ire is the self-righteous tone of this stuff. Some people are really, really scared of Trump. I can certainly understand those feelings and I don’t fault them for feeling that way, especially if his policies will have a direct impact on their life. But if you accept that Clinton is the “lesser evil,” then don’t torture logic like this and try to make it seem like the righteous choice so you don’t have to feel bad about it. You made the decision, so own up to it and stop brow-beating others.

One of the comments mentioned LGBT support for Hillary. I also understand that and I know it’s presented a real quandry for some of the members here too. It’s not a choice I envy having to make and I’m sure some people are really scared. I’m not sure what I’d do in that situation. But tell me: if you support Hillary based on one issue knowing she’s a pro-fracking, pro-TPP warhawk, then what of the people killed or left destitute by those policies? If the people who don’t vote for her are responsible for what others would do to you, then aren’t her supporters equally responsible for those peoples’ woes? That’s a question more people need to ask themselves, I think.

Edit: And that’s why I absolutely will not vote for Trump and why I don’t think I can bring myself to vote for Hillary, even as a “hold your nose lesser evil” vote. The polls don’t give us the option to qualify our vote with “I’m only supporting you because you’re not the other guy and I don’t back your policies” and I don’t want to support or endorse a lot of the shit she stands for.

        • towerofbabel

I have already committed to Stein. I think we will only be in a worse situation if we support Clinton as if she is different. I would rather confront this crisis with my eyes wide open then perpetuate the illusion that Clinton, et al, are anything but a mask for the very same oligarchs that would also control Trump. It’s like choosing which violent gang we want controlling our neighborhood. It makes no sense.

          • I already voted for her! I felt damn good doing so. Seriously: I felt the burden of evil lift from my shoulders.

          • Shohanna

That’s what voting should feel like. πŸ˜€

    • kreskin

Best to vote against the establishment candidate and the status quo , HRC and the people backing her are NOT less evil .

      • Blue Basilisk

That’s what I’m planning to do. Missouri usually goes red in presidential elections anyway.

    • Edwin

I don’t have to decide because I am not American. I would not vote for Trump or Clinton. I think Americans should have been protest voting 30 years ago. Now is a good time to get started. 20 years ago would have been better.

Machines may never master the distinctly human elements of language

In September, Google announced that its Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system can now β€œin some cases” produce translations that are β€œnearly indistinguishable” from those of humans. Still, it noted:

β€œMachine translation is by no means solved. GNMT can still make significant errors that a human translator would never make, like dropping words and mistranslating proper names or rare terms, and translating sentences in isolation rather than considering the context of the paragraph or page.”

In other words, the machine doesn’t entirely get how words work yet.

    http://qz.com/826989/ai-may-never-master-the-distinctly-human-elements-of-language/

    • panem et circenses

So machines are like the majority of humans.

      • 17

Depends on what your definition of the word “is” is, I guess.

        Thanks, Bill.

    • towerofbabel

Machines do not have the same level of agency as humans–yet. But they do have agency. Louis Kahn said “Every car wants to be a cheetah.” And we all know that every gun wants to kill someone or something. As instruments they are just waiting for someone to make it happen.

The FBI Can’t Actually Investigate a Candidate Such as Hillary Clinton

The power above the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the US Attorney General, and, above that person, the US President.

That’s whom the FBI actually serves β€” not the US public.

Democracy Is War by Other Means

Superficially, it is waged with ballots instead of bullets. At the end of the day, those ballots become bullets. Elections load real guns and aim them at real people. If you disobey the commandments handed down by
elected officials, beefy men with shaved heads and Ray-Ban sunglasses will come to take you away. If you resist them, hot lead will fly. Elections are scrambles for control over the service weapons that propel those rounds. In such contests, every faction is trying to point the gun barrels at someone else.

In this war, all sides are net losers, save one: the government.

  • Back from my trip. Links in a bit.

Some notes on my over-night backpacking trip:

    1. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to using hiking poles and how “weird” it seems to walk without them, after only a few hours.

    • Well, it is a phrase only used, in a non-ironic sense, mostly by Conservatives! πŸ˜‰

Your beef is with Amato and the rest of the schmucks over there. πŸ˜€

[pun not really intended, but… hey] (snicker)

        • Oh, no, it was a Reagan appointee who first used the word. Amato and those schmucks are just following the lead of those they look up to! πŸ˜€

          • Edwin

I think they do it because they know it annoys you. Those nasty so and sos.

          • it only annoys me when progressives use it, as using the framing of one’s mortal enemies
is self-defeating in the extreme, if one is not using it “ironically.” As to Amato and his one-ring circus, their use of it just confirmed to me their real leanings. Just like their emphasis on conservatives, conservative policy and conservative personalities did.

I don’t think the Kooks and Losers even remember I exist.

She has some major cognitive dissonance. I read those emails too, and what I found was a goddamned motherfucking LIAR and someone who sold our country down the goddamned river. She is a horrible person.

          • panem et circenses

She does a total hit job, a total smear, and ropes in the Russian hackers, all in one minute and then says, “I don’t want to go there. I don’t want to say anything.” What a piece of work.

Another phony , completely fake .

          • kreskin

Am going to Russia 1st of Feb . Wife came home for two months had to leave again , has been a month already . She’s been gone 6 months out of the last eight . You know the story with her mother. If you been wondering why I’ve been crankier than usual lately … now you know . I plan on staying six months or so , we’ll see how it goes . Am going to put everything in storage . Hopefully we can find someone to take care of our African Gray for us , don’t want to have to give her up , but we may have to . If I had a normal functional family it wouldn’t be a problem , but …

          • Edwin

Thanks for letting me know. It’s hard if your wife has to be there and you’re back home in the States. It might be nice for you to spend the time in Russia. A change can be a good thing.

          • kreskin

I really miss her .. A change will be nice , for sure . I can help out and support them , won’t be paying this outrageous rent

            Americans probably aren’t a big hit there these days , that’s a bit of a concern .

Anyway , Edwin , that’s the plan , assuming that nothing changes.

          • Edwin

Today I removed my Alternet bookmark from my browser’s toolbar. Are there any true progressive sites left that are not in the tank?

    • cathyx

I have many that need to be deleted too. It’s been so disappointing this election cycle.

    • Edwin

I still check it out a few times a week. It’s mostly very disappointing.

      • towerofbabel

The DNC realized that it wasn’t that hard to buy-out or bully-out the opposition. Actually it’s amazing what they did to the progressive internet community.

        • Edwin

Their mistake is they think they’ve silenced us, swayed us, or gotten rid of us. They haven’t. We’ve just gone elsewhere, like here, at Unka’s. And now angry like a disturbed hornet’s nest.

          • kreskin

Face it , Edwin , a relative few of us can be accounted for now . Sanders and Warren really did a number on the progressive movement . Looks as if it was by design … a set up , meant to destroy the ( organized ) progressive movement . It’s amazing how all the supposed progressive / liberal sites have joined the dark side . $ over values and principles , how else can you explain it ?

Regardless , we are worse off now than before this Presidential campaign began . We’re pretty much fucked , S.O.L. .

          • Edwin

A lot of the sites were started during the bushCo junta so it was easy to be (to appear) progressive (and that’s when we started going there.) Once Obama got elected they never held his feet to the fire, but they were still covering leftie stuff and the (R)s are consistently bad so they just had to focus on them and cover some social issues, like rotten cops and abortion. Once the election got going we saw them for what they’ve really been all along.

    • towerofbabel

      I did the same.

    • Good for you! You’ll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy! πŸ˜‰

    • kreskin

It appears that Hillary’s feminazi have taken over that site . They cannot make a rational argument in favor of Clinton , according to them this election is all about their daughters and women in general , the stupid fucks don’t get it , HRC doesn’t give a rats ass about therm or their daughters. Oh , and then there’s the she has experience line , Hillary Clinton has thirty years experience ! Yeah ? Dick Cheney , Donald Rumsfeld and MItch McConnell have years of experience too , you friggin idiots ! And note her long list of accomplishments in those thirty years . Oh , wait . on second thought … scratch that . They are every bit as stupid and simpleminded as the tea baggers , just as obnoxious , there is no difference . Stupid fucks , this is why I believe it’s a hopeless situation , there are far too many senseless people in this country , brains the size of green peas . Seriously .

For you night owls (and everyone), part 1, 2 and 3 are on Vimeo. **Recommended**

    Part
1 is “Empire” and starts with Bill Clinton reneging on “the peace
dividend” (after the Iron Curtain came down) and bumping military and
    secret police budgets. .

The U.S. and it’s NATO lap dogs have not kept their end of the bargain , Russia is NOT the agressor .

      • Edwin

Russia is merely the scapegoat they use to sell their hegemonic aspirations to the American (and global) public. “We have to fight… cuz… Russia!! And the idiots at C&L lap that shit up and dutifully pump it out on their pages. Beloved Obama (Dems/Clinton) says so.

[aside: C&L is the enemy of thinking people. It’s a dangerous propaganda outlet.]

Too many careers and too much money at stake , they’re not about to let the cold war die.

Eisenhower warned us about the MIC , in fact he nailed it . You’ve heard the speech , I’m sure.

I’ve no interest in the assholes at C & L , the people at Breitbart have as much integrity.

          Bed time .

The Russians are occupying our complete hegemony.

Podesta emails- After CNN poll in July 2015 showing Clinton’s unpopularity, Neera Tanden wonders why the person who told Hillary Clinton it was ok to have a private server hasn’t been “drawn and quartered”.

    https://wikileaks.org/podesta-emails/emailid/51094#efmAAGAA9

We all know who wanted the private server, and why, but these elite assholes can’t even conceive of blaming their queen for her own recklessness in trying to cover her own ass.
