The Worst Takes Of 2016 Election: An Unforgiving Retrospective.

Marijuana, Gun Control, Minimum Wage Hikes Win At The Polls. Except here in AZ. 🙁

Conservative Democratic Party Organs go batshit crazy with the projection of their candates sins, on to Trump.

That teen vaping study making the rounds? No surprise, it’s poorly executed and full of holes.

Your Weekend of Weekends.

UnkaWillbur - May 26, 2017

Here' some links to nosh on, to start of your weekend. I hope everyone's weekend is great; me, myself, I'm planning on jumping out of a perfectly…

  • No Song of the Day. It’s that kind of day.

    • Chunga
      • notisaidthepig
        • Chunga

That’s the plain truth. I hope Billary will ride off into the sunset and just stfu. Let them do all the paid speeches they want if anybody is willing to pay them. I hold them both personally responsible for their dirty tricks and egotistical bullshit. I really can’t decide who is more narcissistic, her or trump.

          • EdgarHF

But does Goldman Sachs get a refund?

        • There’s really no need to celebrate Noti, despise Clinton all you want, but we had a better shot with a progressive agenda with Clinton than we do with a Republican executive, legislative, and judicial branchs.

The Democratic party needed to learn the lesson that they can’t game their own party, but it came at a very high price indeed.

          • Dosido3

            Sadly you are right

          • kreskin

No offense , Stephanie , but given these two candidates and the fact that Stein was down at about 2% nationally… talk about a progressive agenda is almost comical at this point .

The world is safer and better off now . There’s a reason why so many PNAC neocon were endorsing and backing Clinton , birds of a feather .

      • FaunaAndFlora

        Well played.

        • Chunga

Good to see you, hope you are well.

          • FaunaAndFlora

Thank you, Chunga. I’m tired but still here. Not surprised by the outcome but still sad. Hope you’re hanging in there too.

          • Chunga

I’m not surprised either unfortunately. I have a rare day off so I’m trying to find some trouble to get into 😉 .

Good morning. I don’t know about your strange dreams last night but I dreamed I was in a war with legions of orcs. My sword was bloody when I woke up sweating trying to exit that nightmare.

Democrats, Trump and the Ongoing, Dangerous Refusal to Learn the Lesson of Brexit

    Greenwald.

    https://theintercept.com/2016/11/09/democrats-trump-and-the-ongoing-dangerous-refusal-to-learn-the-lesson-of-brexit/

    • EdgarHF

And the called progressive blogs have learned nothing and are still spewing the nonsense.

    • kreskin

” THE PARALLELS BETWEEN the U.K.’s shocking approval of the Brexit referendum in June and the U.S.’ even more shocking election of Donald Trump as president last night are overwhelming. “

      • Dosido3

“elites] are devoting their energies to demonizing the victims of their corruption, all in order to delegitimize those grievances and thus relieve themselves of responsibility to meaningfully address them. “

    • Dosido3

I read this entire piece. So true. Thanks for the link. I doubt very much any elites will learn any lessons. I listened to some radio interviews about bringing up the new guard of Dems and the names mentioned were Kaine (!), cuomo, and Kamala Harris…all conservadems!

      • kreskin

They’ll just try another angle .

        • 17

Maybe 8 years from now, when there will be no elections anymore.

          • kreskin

It’s going to be interesting .

      • 17

It is a very good piece, and thanks go to Cathyx.

      • EdgarHF

I am seeing some morons saying that Joe “Bankuptcy reform” could have won. They still don’t get it. They are stuck at “everybody hates Hillary”. They still refuse to look at issues.

        • Dosido3

I don’t quite follow…Biden? And YEAH everybody hates Hillary but they didn’t care!

          • EdgarHF

Some commenterson the “progressive” (really partisan democratic) blogs think Biden should have been the Democratic candidate. They still think this was just about Hillary. They refuse to mind the “It’s the economy stupid” advice from one of their own. They still think if it was another neo-liberal things would have gone differently.

          • Dosido3

            Jesus. That’s fucking stupid.

          • Edwin

            He’s a dick.

  • Chunga

In trying to reply to a person on Crooks blaming any and all Stein voters for Hillary’s loss I looked at each states results and can find only two states, Michigan and Wisconsin, where if all the Stein votes had gone to Hillary she would have won. That would have given her 26 more electoral votes. If you add 4 more for NH, which will go Clinton, she still only gets 258 electoral votes and STILL loses. (Please correct me if I’m wrong on this). So don’t take no crap from those people.

    • 17

They made it clear they didn’t need, and didn’t want us. We proved them wrong. That’s ALL you need to say.

      • EdgarHF

They literally said they did not need us.

        • 17

That they did. And we heard them.

          • EdgarHF

Of course you know it’s our fault.

          • Dosido3

Did you see how quickly some of the trolls signed off at crooks last night? I guess squelching free speech at “progressive” sites didn’t work out so well.

          • EdgarHF

I think a good idea would be for them to stop saying they are progressive.

          • Dosido3

Seriously. Who can ban people and call themselves progressive. So odious!

      • kreskin

        Who’s laughing now ?

        • EdgarHF

          Sadly no one.

          • kreskin

            You’re right .

          • Edwin

(Although I have actually been laughing quite a bit reading THEIR comments.)

          • EdgarHF

Posts by “Ice for Brains Sailor” and and “NoBuddy” are the funniest. It does look like the CTR guys have taken the first liferaft away from the p̶r̶o̶g̶r̶e̶s̶s̶i̶v̶e̶ partisan Democratic blogs.

          • kreskin

            They’ll disappear , as predicted .

          • Edwin

            Blaming everyone who isn’t themself.

          • Chunga

I laughed myself to sleep last night reading their comments. And a Karoli post for fundraising to stave off the Trump era will be posted in 3, 2, 1 …..

        • Edwin

All the people in other countries who now have hope their houses won’t be bombed next week.

          • kreskin

Edgar’s right . President Donald Trump ? This can’t be good . The Republicans have control of Congress. On the other hand , the world dodged a bullet , it’s a little safer now .

          • Edwin

America has survived a long line of Imperial dictators. Trump is an unknown.

          • kreskin

I’m glad Clinton lost , absolutely , but it’s not like we’re out of the woods . We shall see .

          • Edwin

You didn’t exactly have much to choose from.

          • kreskin

            Understatement .

    • kreskin

The problem was the candidate and her party , no one else , they need to pull their heads out of their derrières and get real for once .

It’s their fault that Bernie Sanders isn’t President .

      • Chunga

I know that and you know that. But it’s like trying to pull teeth from a rattlesnake. I’m still arguing with the person that wants to blame Stein even after I’ve given him the numbers. I’m giving him him one last reply with the links then he can go be disillusion on his own dime.

        • kreskin

I know . Like dealing with Tea Baggers , there’s no difference.

        • Dosido3

Hillary won the popular vote. There’s their consolation prize. If anyone knows the rules of the game, it’s their experienced candidate and election gamer, Hillary goddam Clinton.

          • kreskin

If that holds up we’ll never hear the end of it .

    • EdgarHF

It’s actually amazing how they can put their fingers in their ears shouting La La La La and at the same time type. You try to tell me that does not take talent?

    • MeanValueTheorem

Such is the pathology of partisanship. They will never acknowledge HRC’s failures as a candidate. They see her as the victim and not the people she screwed during the primary.

      • Edwin

She lost because she is a woman… obviously.

        • 17

She can go home and play with that “giny” for the rest of her life alone now.

        • MeanValueTheorem

53% of White Women are mansplaining pussy grabbing woman haters apparently.

  • 17

Do you suppose the Kill Team is ready to go now, or will they need more rehearsal before the inauguration? There’s no way TPTB are gonna give Donny the big chair, but Pence knows the score, and is probably MORE of an Adolf clone than Trump.

    • kreskin

Hope not , this country has been through enough .

      • Edwin

Nothing compared to what Hillary is going through today. Woo boy. (Ha ha ha ha ha ha.)

        • kreskin

          She’s devastated .

          • Edwin

            Poor dear.

          • EdgarHF

It’s so sad when a rich clueless politician cries.

          • It’s tragic to think of her huddled in her mansion’s master bedroom under regal linens wiping those tears away with hundred dollar bills from Goldman Sachs.

          • Edwin

I picture her on a rage-filled rampage destroying everything in her path and killing small animals along the way.

          • kreskin

            You’re a sick man , Edwin.

          • Edwin

            I’ll take that as a compliment. ^_^

          • She doesn’t get to kill poor brown people anymore so it makes sense she’d turn to small animals.

“I came, I saw, Fluffy died!!! Hahahahaha!!!!”

          • 17

Yup. I bet she’s having a “Ricki” cry.

          • Edwin

Lots of gin, throwing stuff, screaming, making death threats, etc.

          • EdgarHF

I’m picturing a Scarlet O’Hara type tantrum. In Hillary’s fake Southern Accent.

          • EdgarHF

            boo hoo

  • 17

And a special congrates to Bernie Sanders and Lizzy Warren. You both are completely irrelevant now. Good job.

    • kreskin

      Was it worth it ?

      • MeanValueTheorem

In their minds they aren’t gonna be blamed for this shit sandwich and that was more important than possibly winning.

    • Ironically, if Warren had joined Sanders during the primaries they’d have won this whole thing. Now, they’re both irrelevant.

  • EdgarHF

Dear Hillary supporters, here is a clue. Political parties are made up of coalitions. They have always been coalitions and always will be coalitions. If you willingly disregard a major faction of your coalition you lose. My guess is you will never figure that out.

    • Dosido3

Dear Hillary supporters, gender aside, your candidate is corrupt to the core.

      • Edwin

Dear Hillary supporters, go fuck yourselves in every hole.

  • Edwin

    WTF, America?

Was it the emails or was it the misogyny?

For someone who claims to be a shaker-mover journalist, she’s a stenographer hack and most probably a very stupid (and NASTY) woman.

    • EdgarHF

Banning people who didn’t drink the cool-aid I think was a fine stance. It sealed the bubble nicely.

      • Edwin

Just watch, they will blame everyone but Clinton and their own cheesy selves.

        • Dosido3

You must read Greenwald today. Great takedown.

          • Edwin

            will check it out

        • EdgarHF

“will”? They ARE blaming everyone but her.

      • kreskin

        That helped .

    • Dosido3

      Look in a mirror KK!

    • kreskin

      Hopeless .

  • Dosido3

So Berkeley High School is trending because they staged a walk out in protest of the elections….I get that people were going to be upset today. We were screwed from the get-go. I hope people who automatically vote for D get a fucking clue and find out why most people are independents.

    • Agreed. I hope people start thinking about why we are where we are; get over their petty twitter feuds, micro aggressions and identity politics; and see there are big issues that need to be addressed in order for all the smaller personal issues.

It’s not to totally discount identity politics, but they can’t expect a wide coalition on those issues if things like income inequality, perpetual war, and environmental collapse are hanging over everyone’s heads.

They wanted Hillary because she was seen as a champion of those identity issues even though she was the enemy of the big issues. Now, they will lose ground on those identity issues and who knows what will happen on the big ones.

  • After eight years of “working with the other side” Obama will have the horrific task of handing the keys to the White House to a racist birther. I actually feel a little bad for him but his catering to the 1% and idiotic quest to appease the rightwing led to this. If he had followed through on his campaign promises and built a strong left wing this would not have happened. Instead, they came out of the gates hippie-punching and alienated the base on most every issue from the economy to war to justice to the environment.

    • Edwin

Fuck him. Losing the presidency and both houses reflects a lot on his presidency. He served the 0.1%.

      • He padded his resume well and will probably end up as rich – if not more – as Bill Clinton. That’s why my pity for him only lasts a few moments. It’s more a sorrow I feel for my many black and brown friends who felt – dispite his faults – that Obama was a symbol of possibility for people of color. To see him hand over power to an outspoken bigot is an ugly symbol.

Hopefully they will see Obama’s symbolism as what it was: lipstick on the ugly pig that is American society.

        • Dosido3

That’s all it ever was…symbolism. Obama didn’t win just because he was black. Being black was the unique selling proposition between two equal candidates with similar policies and he sold it way better than Clinton sold her gender in 2008. She relied on it way way way too much this time. People don’t vote for history. It’s an extra. Obama didn’t run as a black man. He ran as a presidential candidate and said some things people wanted to hear.

          • Exactly. Well said.

          • FaunaAndFlora

I think Obama won in 2008 because he ran as a change candidate. This time it was Trump who ran as a change candidate, as did Sanders in the primaries. I know Republicans who voted for Sanders in the primaries because they wanted a change candidate and thought Trump was too crazy. Most of the people around here who had Trump signs in their yards had Obama signs in 2008 and even in 2012. These people used to be rank-and-file, blue collar, union Democrats. They didn’t leave the party. The party left them.

            We are so screwed.

    • Dosido3

I don’t feel sorry for any of them. They keep shitting on voters. That’s the only bipartisan agreement to be had.

  • Edwin

The s-called left can’t see itself. Nothing sexist or racist in this headline, is there?

White America Proves How Much It Hates Women (and Latinos, Muslims, Blacks and Jews)

Women are in for it under President Donald Trump.
    http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/white-america-proves-how-much-it-hates-women-and-latinos-muslims-blacks-and-jews

    • panem et circenses

The declining white middle class, coveted by both parties. The working class remains unmobilized.

      • Dosido3

I think the working class was really mobilized to fuck over the establishment. It’s the only power play they have.

        • kreskin

This was a rejection of the establishment and the status quo , our BREXIT moment.

        • Edwin

A giant Molotov cocktail with FUCK YOU written on the side.

        • panem et circenses

50% of voting age Americans didn’t vote. Nearly 100% of them were poor and working class people. Trump may have moblized a tiny percentage of what could fairly be called the “working class”, but the vast majority of his votes came from comfortable middle to upper-middle class white voters, who see themselves as slipping in authority and privilege. The vast majority of the working class, as always, remains unmobilized.

          • Dosido3

Yikes. Ok. Where did you find those stats?

          • panem et circenses

Various sources. Approximately 125 million votes were counted according to the live election tracking sites, and there are about 240 million voting age Americans (google says ~235 mil). The fact that voting participation goes up in proportion to income is pretty widely acknowledged, though I don’t have a source for that at the moment.

Voting on presidential election years is usually between 45-60% of the voting age population in the US. It was down a bit this year.

This article has some of the numbers (and a whole lot of speculation).

            http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/11/7/13536198/election-day-americans-vote

          • Dosido3

            Thanks so much Panem

        • panem et circenses

This is an old article from the primaries, but it backs up what I’m trying to say:

The Mythology Of Trump’s ‘Working Class’ Support
His voters are better off economically compared with most Americans.

          http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-mythology-of-trumps-working-class-support/

Also, the fact that the higher your income, the more likely you are to vote. The 50% of the country that didn’t vote at all are the majority of working class people.

    • kreskin

Even now , they refuse take any responsibility , refuse to acknowledge any of Hillary’s faults and negatives , refuse to acknowledge any of the party’s faults and negatives . Reading their comments you would think that we just crucified the Christ .

      • Edwin

She is? Do I need to go over there again? ^_^

        • kreskin

Your friend is hysterical , she’s lost it . To read the comments is to visit another planet …. far from the one we’re living in . .

          • Edwin

The poor dear. She was certainly smug when she was up there on her high horse banning people for having opinions.

And I guess that job she was promised by Kamp Klinotn fell through so now she has to remain a D-grade, sour grapes, pseudo-journalist-stenographer for what’s left of the Dems at Amato’s shithole.

          • kreskin

Something to laugh about , for sure .

  • panem et circenses

The least funny Onion articles I’ve ever seen are being churned out today. I hope the writers shake off their hangovers and post-election blues soon.

    • Edwin

A Clinton supporter bought The Onion. Prolly all in the depths of despair today.

      • panem et circenses

I know, but they were still pretty funny, if partisan. It’s not like they weren’t just as centrist liberal under the old ownership.

        • Edwin

          Yeah, true.

(I am an Edwin scorned. Grrr.)

  • panem et circenses

In answer to all those throwing the blame around at non-voters, 3rd party voters, and even hilariously at the media who adored her for her loss, Hillary Clinton blew a slam dunk victory to a clown after outspending him 2-1. Only she could’ve lost that election. If not for her hubris Trump would’ve never had a shot to be elected. She needs to get out of politics and go fuck off somewhere.

    • kreskin

A two time loser , no less , snapped defeat out of the jaws of victory .

      • Edwin

She’ll be fundraising for 2020 by this afternoon. She wants it that bad, needs it, must have it. Her prec-c-c-ciousssss.

        • Dosido3

Fuck. Another Trump/Hillary throw down? No! She barely made it through this year standing up!

    • Dosido3

She has a terminal case of hubris. Wow. I couldn’t understand why being one of e most connected and most powerful people with a huge foundation wasn’t enough for her.

And Dems didn’t care about winning. They cared about shoving a deeply unpopular candidate down our throats.

    • MeanValueTheorem

The long fucking road to this historic failure is punctuated every 3 steps with opportunities to beat the most undetectable Republican in history. They refused to humble themselves and reach out to those they defeated on dubious grounds. They opted instead to kick people in the teeth and demand they fall in line, even going so far as to insist they could win this alone…to their amazement today they are grappling with the fact that they lost harder than anyone has lost in a long ass time.

Clinton didn’t have to fight Sanders on a symbolic toothless platform.
Clinton didn’t have to take his supporters for granted.
Clinton didn’t have to praise Nancy Reagan for imaginary actions taken during the darkest days of the AIDS epidemic.
Clinton didn’t have to hire her corrupt stooge DWS when she was exposed as rigging the primary in her favor.
Clinton didn’t have to brand Sanders supporters as Naderite misogynists.
Clinton didn’t have to pick Tim fucking anti-abortion Kaine instead of Warren or Sanders, or anyone else for that matter.
Clinton’s husband didn’t have to commit poll rigging in broad daylight with impunity during the MA primary.
Clinton didn’t have to refuse to share her Godlman Sachs speeches.
Clinton didn’t have to brag about being Kissinger’s protege.
Clinton didn’t have to promote fracking globally only to peddle mealy mouthed vague nonsense about Climate change.
Clinton didn’t have to make equivocating statements about a woman’s right to chose.
Clinton didn’t have to hire Podesta.
Clinton didn’t have to say she’d put Bill in charge of the Economy after his decision to deregulate the banks led to the Great Recession.
Clinton didn’t have to say Student debt relief was a pipe dream.
Clinton didn’t have to oppose the 15/hr min wage.
Clinton didn’t have to call the TPP the gold standard.
      …………………………and on it goes.

    • Blue Basilisk

In one of his posts this morning, Nate Silver said this is the end of the Clinton Dynasty. I pray he’s right.

      • kreskin

Those $225,000 speeches are going to be hard to come by now . .

      • kreskin

No more Bushes , no more Clintons .

  • MeanValueTheorem

Well Obamacare is gone. Maybe taking the Public Option off the table was a mistake. A mistake Democrats will never acknowledge.

    Build the Green Party NOW.

    • Yudhishthira

They can’t dismantle it that quickly without an 80% margin, which they don’t have unless the chickenshits in the part waver yet once again.

      • Blue Basilisk

I think Big Pharma and the Insurance companies will speak up if there’s a chance they can actually dismantle it. It’s a guaranteed hand-out for them and I doubt they’ll be willing to let it go quietly.

        • Yudhishthira

The perks for them will remain, no doubt.

      • MeanValueTheorem

My money is on Democrats never showing the kind of recalcitrance Republicans are known for. It will take that much and more to mitigate some of the damage coming our way. Democrats aren’t fighters.

        • Yudhishthira

Judo is an acceptable way of fighting. Let them hurt themselves. I’m surprised 2008 didn’t cure the masses of voting for the GOP.

          • MeanValueTheorem

Yeah. 8 years of Obama’s Judo and look where we are.

You cannot shame the shameless. You cannot save this nation and the world from destruction while allowing Republicans and Corporate Democrats to destroy it.

That judo shit sounds an awful lot like Christians telling you to turn the other cheek and die because paradise is in the after life and vengeance is the lord’s.

I live on earth. When fracking destroys the water table that’s it, game over. When racists round hispanics up and put them in concentration camps…err…private immigrant detention centers, game over. You can’t stand over those graves in Iraq and wag bring the 100K dead innocents back by wagging your finger at Bush regime war criminals. In the real world you need to fight.

  • MeanValueTheorem

I can’t recall how many times I told some CTR fuckstick troll online that their kick-bernie-supporters in the teeth behavior will cost them this election.

Ugh. I just went over to crooks to taste their tears. They continue to be stupid fucks defending Hillary and continuing to insult the voters who are hurting so bad they want to burn everything down. They are drowning in denial.

PS they are still kicking Berners over there. Stephen Byrne is fighting the good fight.

          • Yudhishthira

While it was forecast that this election might spell the death of the GOP, it’s actually the DNC that might not make it. Leadership won’t take responsibility for being dumbasses. DWS lost the 2008 campaign and she had a big part in losing this one. And yet they still tote her around like an adopted puppy.

          • MeanValueTheorem

The democratic establishment as it exists today is the picture of self delusion. While they’ve spent the last 8 years padding themselves on the back for electing Obama, maps of state governments and the national legislature have gone deep red at a frightening pace. Today the Republican Party is more powerful than it’s ever been. And in that time Democrats have refuse to reassess their strategy, no failure was great enough to make them question their ideological aversion to all things leftist.

If they completely collapse as a party the nation will be better for it.

          • Yudhishthira

I just saw a comment (here?) about the ‘slow coup’ that caught Dems by surprise. That’s how clueless the DNC leadership keeps their followers. They don’t seem to recognize exponential growth when they see it. And then they act8vey alienate vast swathes of their own base (wtf?).

        • Chunga

I’m now a ‘Stein retard’ and an apologist for who sabotaged the country for a protest vote according to one disgruntled Hillary supporter over there.

Holy shit. I listened to all the people interviewed who were asked why Hillary lost, and every single one of them is so out of touch as to why she lost. It’s quite eye opening. Even after Jordan says he’s been around the entire country talking to people and he tells them what he found, they completely dismissed it.

      • Dosido3

I want to watch the Circus documentary now. The producers were on Colbert and they said what we know: people around the country are PISSED OFF! At government, at Wall Street, at the media, etc. voters have had it.

I submitted my comment before i heard the last bit. Jordan says exactly what my comment said right at the end of the clip.

Glenn: “Trump vowed to destroy the system that elites love (for good reason) and the masses hate (for equally good reason), while Clinton vowed to manage it more efficiently. That, as Matt Stoller’s indispensable article in The Atlantic three weeks ago documented, is the conniving choice the Democratic Party made decades ago: to abandon populism and become the party of technocratically proficient, mildly benevolent managers of elite power. Those are the cynical, self-interested seeds they planted, and now the crop has sprouted.”

    • kreskin

It’s funny . The pundits are flabbergasted , spitting and sputtering , trying to explain it .

    • MeanValueTheorem

Democrats are incapable of judging their own actions as mistakes.
5 – 1 = 5 + (-1) because the result is the same even though the operation on the left presupposes the existence on the set of integers, whereas the operation on the right only assumes the existence the set of whole numbers. Both results, though equivalent hinge on two separate universes.

They cannot understand these election results as a failure of the centrist Clintonian Third-Way DLC paradigm they’ve placed their faith in it entirely. They’ve drowned their capacity for critical thought in an ideology that increasingly distances itself from reality. This failure will be explained away in the usual manner that doubles down on the fundamental Clintonian Axioms: “We should have tacked further to the right!” “We lost because of liberal purity!” “We lost because of Third Party Spoilers!” “We lost because this is a center right nation!” “We lost because of the appeal of racism/misogyny/islamophobia/homophobia…” We lost because Millennials didn’t fall in line!”

      • Dosido3

Yep. As bad as teabaggers. “But we have good intentions!” “We’re the lesser evil!” Really. I hope some bright person with some stones can hold up a mirror to the campaign team/DNC and show them in a very clinical manner how their “outreach” of insults, condescension and unmitigated arrogance failed.

      • EdgarHF

They’re still trying to prove: “This sentence is false.” 🙂 I think you hit the nail on the head.

“Voters Repudiate Clinton.” Thank you for posting this article, Unka. The analysis here and in the comments there helped me shake off my funk and get through the day today. A lot of my friends are extremely gloom and doom about Trump, but it’s possible that the strife between him and the old guard neocons will stymie the both of them until the next mid-term.

    • Dosido3

Yeah, guess what? We “got through” 8 years of Bush and many of his great ideas were continued by Obama. I just lurked at Crooks and boy, I thought I was supposed to be the one who believed in rainbow farting unicorns. The sun will rise again.

      • Dosido3

Seriously! This is the weirdest time ever. Choose your poison. People were going to be pissed off and scared no matter what. There are a lot of people who are OUT OF WORK and the status quo ISNT working. It really is 1930s Germany.

        • kreskin

Who could have imagined this ? End times ? Maybe the Christians are on to something .

        • Blue Basilisk

The DNC has shown again and again that they’re incapable of learning the lessons of history. Sadly, I don’t think this is going to teach them either. :/ The party’s machinery is still strong and it seems more and more likely that any third party will have to fight their way through the wreckage of the DNC before they can approach the national stage.

      • Blue Basilisk

That’s just it. He isn’t gunning for war with Russia, China or Syria (that I know of) and the TPP may well be dead in the water. If both of those hold true, it’ll be better for us in the long run. I have no doubt we’ll have to fight him tooth and nail at home on social issues but I was expecting to do the same with Hillary.

It’s still some time before he’s sworn in, so I’m trying to hold off and worry about what he’s going to do when it actually happens. It’s Congress I’m more worried about. Those self-serving swine can always be counted on to do the wrong thing regardless of which party has the majorities. Maybe they’ll waste another year or two on Clinton investigations.

Edit: We’re stuck with the guy one way or the other. It might be possible to wring some small benefit out of that stone while we’re burdened with it.

        • Dosido3

I understand why POC would be frightened. But no one on the Dem side was doing anything to help and I cannot see how it can get worse. Well it can get worse, but Dems are complicit by not doing anything.

Several LGBT people I know were near tears today out of terror. I did my best to comfort them, but I wasn’t sure what to say. President or no, he’s not free to do as he pleases. There are laws and checks in place if he wants to act on any of his hateful rhetoric…assuming anyone can be assed to enforce them, that is.

          • Edwin

What do they think Trump is going to do?

          • Blue Basilisk

I think they believe he’s immediately going to attack LGBT rights, roll back any gains that have been made and effectively kill any hope of equality for the next 40 years or so.

          • Edwin

Similar to most of my lifetime. We’ve gone beyond that. The genie is out of the bottle. He might be able to put a damper on things, but he can’t reverse them. The public is largely fine with gays now.

We’re no longer the sick, twisted, deviant monsters they painted us to be when I was young.

          • Blue Basilisk

That’s what I’m sincerely hoping. Gay marriage was legalized in spite of a conservative court and a hideous bigot like Scalia.

          • Edwin

And gays are on every TV show and movie as stars now.

          • Annaleigh

It’s still really frightening, because we don’t know yet what will happen next…I’m glad That Woman and the establishment got their shellacking and hopefully the Clintons will go away now like they ought to, but most of the people actually retweeting the suicide hotline last night were POC, LGBT, Muslims, the disabled, etc. because we’re scared shitless.

          • panem et circenses

The Democrats have never been the “good guys”. My suggestion for anyone who has problems is to seek out your local Food Not Bombs, Antifa and most importantly organize support in your communities. The government isn’t there to protect us, it’s there to make sure the rich have their stolen property and ability to exploit poor and working class folks protected. Of course, there’s so much we can’t do that we still have to rely on state institutions for, and people might still end up suffering in a few more ways than we already have been, but there are a few around the country working on changing that, while liberals only give us platitudes and a facade of solidarity in order to get what they want from us.

          • Annaleigh

It hurts to say, but you’re right. A lot of people who will be hurting now will have to do as you say and also build new organizations as well.

        • kreskin

          A good assessment , comrade . I agree.

The media produces mostly a haze of neoliberal delusions–when it’s not toxic reactionary stuff. The Trump/Clinton followers are a product of the media. Most of the folks who comment here are obsessed with news and alternate media sources and very resourceful in our own ways. So we saw through the DNC’s corruption and saw this coming. Personally, I feel like I already went through mourning for this country. Now I’m mad-but calm.

Ilhan Omar, meanwhile, became the nation’s first Somali-American state legislator, winning a seat representing Minneapolis in the Minnesota House. Minnesota Public Radio reported:

While her election wasn’t a surprise in a reliably Democratic district—she was elected by almost 80 percent of the vote there—it carried huge symbolic importance in Minnesota, home to the nation’s largest Somali immigrant population. It came just days after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump ripped Somali immigration as a threat to Minnesota.

“Minneapolis said no tonight, said no to hatred, said no to the narrative of making America hate again,” said Habon Abdulle, executive director of the nonprofit Women Organizing Woman, where Omar is director of policy. “Minneapolis, and [the] 60B district particularly, you said Muslim women have space in the governing body of our state. Thank you.”

He makes a legitimate case for Trump–possibly–being the lesser evil. I know what GoldClinton would do. “A vindictive dictator” of Wall Street. I don’t know for sure what Trump will do. I’m not hopeful.

^ I was being extremely sarcastic. She’s pushing pussyfooting, liberal feel-good non-violent protest. She wouldn’t advocate lifting a finger to harm a fascist even if there were literally one standing on your face.

The majority of liberals can’t even conceive of having any power outside the suggestion box they slip their ballots into every couple years. They’ll rend their garments and pull out their hair, but ultimately the vast majority of liberal voters will sit back and sip their tea even if they actually believe literal fascism is coming to the country. Maybe they’ll pick up a cardboard sign one weekend or write a strongly worded editorial, but mostly they’ll mill around like cattle and continue being useless.

While I’m certainly not happy that a Fascist won the WH, let this be the final nail in the coffin of neo-liberalism.

When the Dems went into bed with Wall St, and corporations 30 years ago, this was the inevitable result. The Dems gave the people a big fuck you, and the people finally gave it right back.

Hillary was a historically poor candidate. She wasn’t well liked, with a savage likability rating, she wasn’t particularly exciting, she was offering more of the same neo-liberal horse shit that we’ve had stuffed down our throats for decades, and the folks declined, finally.

America has the POTUS they deserve. A racist, bigoted, misogynistic, greed obsessed, ignorant, sexual predator.

      Don’t Mourn Hillary’s Loss:

      http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/11/09/dont-mourn-hillarys-loss/

“Hillary Clinton and whatever she actually stood for, lost, and lost bad. Far worse than any polls suggested, even the few that had Trump squeaking out a victory.

There will be plenty of blame flying around in the weeks and months ahead. Yet, no matter what bullshit excuse Democrats come up with for Hillary’s historic embarrassment, they have only themselves to blame. She lost because she deserved to lose. She ran an awful campaign, mired in controversy, and was unable to excite voters to the polls. She believed neoliberalism could carry the day, but she was wrong. The DNC was wrong. The establishment lost because the establishment deserved its fate.”

Wow…So much feckless delusion on that discussion board. It didn’t help them that Hillary just abandoned all of her supporters on election night, sending John Podesta to close the victory celebration with a terse statement, telling them “she has always been with you.” Except for right then, when her stunned, shell-shocked followers were most in need of some leadership reassurance and a calming influence to assuage their panic and prepare them for the inevitable conclusion. Instead, they were simply cast adrift by a campaign bureaucrat while in a state of cold shock, discarded like squandered party favors into the disquieted streets during the middle of a forsaken night.

      • It was the cowardly move, of a politician whose braggadocio is hailed as real, but was revealed as bullshit as she “phoned it in” to her most enthusiastic supporters. It’s clear she either doesn’t intend to run for any office, ever again, or just assumes she can treat her followers any way she likes and they will still supporter her, for which there is plenty of precedent.

Just a general response to some of the comments about identity politics: I believe identity politics has its place (partly because I believe you *must* include economic class in your understanding of intersectionality, which was the massive failure of this election, imo), but a lot of people need to rethink their relationship to it, especially the weaponization of identity politics needs to end. People like Joy Reid (the worst offender in this whole election, imo, with Amanda Marcotte as second runner up) used identity politics as club to beat Bernie supporters and Trump supporters over the head while completely blinded to their own class privilege. Intersectionality means that someone like Joy Reid’s experience is informed both by her being a WOC but also as someone who has had the benefit of higher education, and the economic privilege that comes with being a correspondent on MSNBC for crying out loud. Similarly, white Trump voters experience is informed by their white privilege but also their very real marginalizations as part of the working or poorer classes.

In this election a lot of liberals told Bernie supporters and later Trump supporters that just by virtue of not supporting the same candidate that a lot (but not all!) of POC, LGBT, etc. supported, they were racist, sexist, etc. Were some people motivated by racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. etc.? Hell yeah! But you can only cry wolf so many times before people stop listening to you. I pride myself on my intersectional feminism and I belong to almost all the groups Trump insulted, but by the end of this even I was completely exasperated by Hillary supporters who would make these accusations if they so much as stubbed their toes. They did everyone a disservice with that, a huge disservice.

Not only did they weaponize identity politics against people who have white privilege but lack class privilege, they outright erased POC, LGBT people, the disabled, etc. who are either poor or leftists or both in order to attack white people.

I hope those who did that will learn they can’t do that anymore, they behaved the way they accused relatively privileged people of behaving. And people like Amanda Marcotte are very, very privileged and yet still howl about people who didn’t want HRC are privileged, even as she had POC/LGBT leftists telling her how clueless she was. I don’t have much faith they will learn though. This campaign was like a white feminist blog acted out in real life, and as usual marginalized people were the ones who got hurt.

    • panem et circenses

Well said. Class reductionists are just as bad as those liberals who hijack “identity politics” for their own political and economic motives. Anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia are all class struggles. If we don’t engage in them there’s no reason for our more oppressed comrades to engage with us.

    • panem et circenses

Also, you should write a lot more often!

    • Very well put. I may use this – with citation of course since your perspective would be absurd from my hetero white male mouth 🙂

Sadly, their hubris set all identity politics back on so many levels.

The thing so many seem to miss is identity politics are only foremost to those who share that identity. Example: I care about BLM, but I also care about LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, etc. At the end of the day I support all but in a limited sense. I don’t really live any of them. As James Baldwin said: “When the heat gets to hot, whites can go home. We live in this fight”. People outside an identity can be an ally but they still have their own concerns as well.

That’s where your intersectionality comes into play. Inclusive movements that take into account the different needs and values of individuals and find ways to benefit each other are essential.

    • notisaidthepig

Thanks for that, Annaleigh. It’s perfect.

    • EdgarHF

I disagree that Bernie wouldn’t have beat Trump, but this is an excellent video otherwise! Plenty of people IN the US knew Hillary was a warmongering neo-con but the media narrative tried to make that a conspiracy theory. Her getting the support of Bush the Elder should have sent up so many red flags. It’s nice to see that people outside the US weren’t buying her snake oil.

      • Edwin

That stood out for me too, but he’s so right on about so very much (and not just in this video) I can live with that.

  • Is Alternet waking up from its Hillary-induced stupidity? I mean, they still have drivel from Amanda Marcotte blaming all men for Hillary’s loss, but they also have this thorough and strong denunciation of the lies, arrogance, and idiocy of the mainstream Democrats.

    http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/death-democratic-party-death-liberal-media-and-way-bernie-would-have-won

Of course, they don’t call themselves out for their own editorial cheerleading for failure, but is a start to regaining a semblance of sanity.

    • SmotPoker

A particularly truthful paragraph in the article that really should hit home with so many of us here….

“The liberal elite, all during this campaign, showed its intolerant colors, mocking anyone who raised questions about Hillary’s background and competence as inherently misogynist, sidelining questions of political economy in favor of preferred identity politics tropes, banning dissenters and skeptics of Narrative 1 from their websites and forums, questioning their very humanity.”

The so called “liberal elite” were so entrenched in their own fucking bubble, telling us all that Hillary’s farts were the sweetest ever smelled, they failed to see the reality unfolding outside their bubble.

      • So true. I was surprised to see that on Alternet since they weren’t shy with the ban hammer if I remember correctly. I know I got banned back in ’08 for talking about voting third party.

        • SmotPoker

Hell, I got banned there for a comment made on TPV! One comment, three bans: Raw Story, TPV, and AN.

          My comment you ask?

“How come it’s OK for Hillary supporters to call Bernie supporters “Bernie Bro’s” with the inherent douchebaggery that it implies, but it’s not cool to call the Democrat corporate whores, corporate whores?”

Bang, bang, Maxwell’s silver hammer came down upon my head….

I left a note for Amanda.

Oh, here’s a keeper from that article:

“Essentially, those who chose Hillary over Bernie during the primaries,
when we had a clear choice, voted for Trump, since Bernie was always the
stronger candidate against Trump or any Republican general election
candidate. The polls consistently proved it.”

So a vote for $hillary was really a vote for Trump. Ha!

      • Edwin

that was before…………… (wait) ………….. Russia!

    • notisaidthepig

Pardon me, the ending is even better:

“To all those who made the cynical choice of supporting Hillary Clinton,
when the evidence was clear that she would perform much worse than
Bernie Sanders against Trump or any other Republican, thank you for
causing this catastrophe. You are directly responsible for the desperate
fate of millions of people about to undergo unimaginable hardship,
while you talk cavalierly of moving to Canada or Europe. Keep talking,
      in your bubble.”

They fail to take into account that the reason she GOT more votes is because they had their thumb on the scale, and the media was complicit in the sense of a virtual media blackout on Bernie until it was too late, much like their awakening over Trump.

Whoa, that was a wild 2 weeks. I am so tired. Had to go to the hospital yesterday, found out I have to have a stint in my artery to my kidney! O.o **sigh** Might be the reason for my hypertension! Wonderful. No idea when or how, still contacting the person or persons who need to assess my situation. My kidney fucking hurts now. 🙁

The kid had a root canal and is doing fine. except for snagging a winter cold. /sigh LOL 2 weeks of HEAVY DUTY cindimycin and she has a cold now?! **smdh** Anyway, they just left to go back to VA. Me? I am exhausted and headed to take a nap. Then I have to clean the house, it looks like a tornado hit it. What is it about guests that tear a house to pieces? GAH!
