Sat. SciFi – Inhabited Island (Open Thread)

Aug 27, 2016
1426 Views 616

If you think Russian Science Fiction is still stuck in the age or Soviet propaganda or, beyond that, only know Solaris, you’re in for a treat. Modern Russian Science Fiction is literate, beautiful and thoughtful in a way almost no American SciFi is these days (Even Star Trek has become the next “Need For Speed” sequel.) Meet 2009’s “Inhabited Island.”

It’s the year 2157. Maxim Kammerer (Stepanov), a space explorer from Earth, crash lands on an unknown planet. His ship is destroyed, and now he’s stuck there “like Robinson on an uninhabited island” (hence the title). Maxim encounters local military police, who don’t believe Maxim is alien and send him to mental hospital in the capital. Guy Gaal (Fyodorov), a corporal of the Guards, is assigned to escort Maxim.

Adapted by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko from the 1969 novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky of the same Russian name, published in English as Prisoners of Power; a part of Noon Universe series. It is a dystopian story set on post-apocalyptic planet Saraksh, ruled by totalitarian regime that brainwashes its citizens. Maxim Kammerer, a space explorer from Earth, crash lands on Saraksh and becomes involved in the planet’s ever-boiling politics.

    ..

  • cathyx

Unka, are you serious that this is good? Or is it so bad it’s good?

    • No, this is an amazing piece of Science Fiction. Not my usual “badgood” post. It’s adapted from the Strugatsky brothers’ novel, “Prisoners of Power.” It, and it’s sequel are, imnho, some of the best scifi of the last decade.

You can also read a bit more about the titular “Inhabited Island,” aka, “Saraksh

    Today’s opening “Hero” story:

Sandusky, Ohio Sheriff Kyle Overmyer Indicted on 43 Charges Including 38 Felonies

Sheriff Kyle Overmyer of Sandusky, Ohio was pretty much the shoe-in to win re-election to the post he was originally appointed to after the previous sheriff died and a nice little raise that goes along with it in November. Although, the Republican Party hasn’t decided whether they should withdraw their support just yet, the fact that he was just indicted on 43 charges, 38 of which are felonies, related to drugs and theft of cash from his and surrounding jurisdictions might put a slight dent into his campaign.

Facebook is trying to get rid of bias in Trending news by getting rid of humans

Facebook will no longer employ humans to write descriptions for items in its Trending section, which attracted controversy over allegations of political bias in May. Topics appearing in the Trending section will now appear solely as a short phrase or single word, with an indication of the number of people discussing it onthe social network.

Quartz confirmed from multiple sources that Facebook has laid off the entire editorial staff on the Trending
team—15-18 workers contracted through a third party. The Trending team will now be staffed entirely by engineers, who will work to check that topics and articles surfaced by the algorithms are newsworthy.

    • cathyx

Now they just have to put input trigger words to disallow postings.

    • Edwin

Laid off or booted (fired). I was “laid off” once. I knew they had no intention of ever seeing my face again.

Criminal Kiev Regime Gets a CNN Makeover… Cue More War

This absurd reduction of history provides a much-needed makeover for the illegal Kiev regime that seized power in February 2014. It also sanitizes the involvement of Washington and the European Union in
fomenting the coup against Ukraine’s then elected government. And, recklessly, this kind of US media distortion serves to embolden the Kiev regime to continue its criminal aggression against the people of
eastern Ukraine, and to ignore its commitments to the February 2015 Minsk peace deal, as well as reportedly conduct acts of terrorism against Crimea.

In other words, this is a case study in how ostensibly independent Western media dutifully perform a propaganda function and are in effect complicit in war crimes.

WhatsApp Isn’t Only Giving Your Information to Facebook — and No, You Can’t Opt-Out

When Facebook purchased the encrypted mobile messaging app, WhatsApp, for $19 billion in 2014, some users were concerned about the security of their information and the implications of their private correspondence being handed over to the largest data mining operation in human history. At the time, WhatsApp founder Jan Koum claimed there would be no changes in operations, claiming:

“There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product.”

Surprise! WhatsApp announced Thursday it would be sharing all user information with Facebook, compromising the core principle that defined the company — privacy.

    • RTIII

No, the only core principal is making money; I’m sure that wasn’t compromised!

California May Abolish the Death Penalty

On Election Day, California voters will make a monumental moral and financial decision. Proposition 62 — the Justice That Works Act — is on the Nov. 8 ballot, and if the initiative passes, it will replace the death penalty with life in prison without parole. It will also require convicted murderers to work and pay restitution to their victims’ families. And it will save taxpayers $150 million a year, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office.

  • RTIII

Left over from the previous thread was a meme about useless machines.

If you watched the video presented, it showed a machine whose only apparent function was to turn itself off. (That’s false, however; it’s real function was to try and get stupid humans to react.)

However, after that video, if you were too slow to turn off You-Tube, it went on to play another video purporting to show 10 useless machines. Among these, was #7, The Hammer, which appears 51 seconds in to this 2:48 short:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiG13q79iQE

However, “The Hammer” isn’t useless at all! It’s the fundamental of several real tools out there, the most obvious of which is the powered planishing hammer.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planishing

Thus ends this morning’s Public Service Announcement! 😉

  • SpiffyTheValiant

-_- MSNBC is spinning this Clinton Foundation thing amazingly. Do their lips hurt from kissing the Clinton’s asses so much?

    • RTIII

      What r they saying?!

I’m amazed they’re even talking about it at all!

      • SpiffyTheValiant

        But but Republicans did it.

How can you be shocked that politicians met with donors.

        no donor actually got anything.

        there’s no proof.

it’s a witch hunt, but they didn’t actually catch her.

The clinton foundation is amazing because it helps aids patients

    • MsPythia

      Good morning Spiffykins!

I read this article not too long ago from Matt Taibbi that really summed up how there are right and left camps in “News” now, rather than any attempt at unbiased journalism and reporting (this probably has been posted here before, but if anyone missed it…):

      The Summer of the Shill
Campaign 2016 won’t just have lasting implications for American politics. It’s obliterated what was left of our news media

      http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/matt-taibbi-on-the-summer-of-the-media-shill-w434484

      • SpiffyTheValiant

Oh I’m fine with bias. I can tell when it’s going on, but when you actually are so sickening about it that it makes me want to vomit, lol.

In honor of this being a science fiction thread I dusted off this charming bit of sci-fi from the shelves. No doubt many if not all of you have read this previously. This is the correct version posted as intended by the original author, Terry Bison.

    THEY’RE MADE OUT OF MEAT

    “They’re made out of meat.”

    “Meat?”

“Meat. They’re made out of meat.”

    “Meat?”

“There’s no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way through. They’re completely meat.”

“That’s impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars?”

“They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don’t come from them. The signals come from machines.”

“So who made the machines? That’s who we want to contact.”

“They made the machines. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. Meat made the machines.”

“That’s ridiculous. How can meat make a machine? You’re asking me to believe in sentient meat.”

“I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. These creatures are the only sentient race in that sector and they’re made out of meat.”

“Maybe they’re like the orfolei. You know, a carbon-based intelligence that goes through a meat stage.”

“Nope. They’re born meat and they die meat. We studied them for several of their life spans, which didn’t take long. Do you have any idea what’s the life span of meat?”

“Spare me. Okay, maybe they’re only part meat. You know, like the weddilei. A meat head with an electron plasma brain inside.”

“Nope. We thought of that, since they do have meat heads, like the weddilei. But I told you, we probed them. They’re meat all the way through.”

    “No brain?”

“Oh, there’s a brain all right. It’s just that the brain is made out of meat! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.”

“So … what does the thinking?”

“You’re not understanding, are you? You’re refusing to deal with what I’m telling you. The brain does the thinking. The meat.”

“Thinking meat! You’re asking me to believe in thinking meat!”

“Yes, thinking meat! Conscious meat! Loving meat. Dreaming meat. The meat is the whole deal! Are you beginning to get the picture or do I have to start all over?”

“Omigod. You’re serious then. They’re made out of meat.”

“Thank you. Finally. Yes. They are indeed made out of meat. And they’ve been trying to get in touch with us for almost a hundred of their years.”

“Omigod. So what does this meat have in mind?”

“First it wants to talk to us. Then I imagine it wants to explore the Universe, contact other sentiences, swap ideas and information. The usual.”

“We’re supposed to talk to meat.”

“That’s the idea. That’s the message they’re sending out by radio. ‘Hello. Anyone out there. Anybody home.’ That sort of thing.”

“They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts?”
“Oh, yes. Except they do it with meat.”

“I thought you just told me they used radio.”

“They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You know how when you slap or flap meat, it makes a noise? They talk by flapping their meat at each other. They can even sing by squirting air through their meat.”

“Omigod. Singing meat. This is altogether too much. So what do you advise?”

    “Officially or unofficially?”

    “Both.”

“Officially, we are required to contact, welcome and log in any and all sentient races or multibeings in this quadrant of the Universe, without prejudice, fear or favor. Unofficially, I advise that we erase the records and forget the whole thing.”

“I was hoping you would say that.”

“It seems harsh, but there is a limit. Do we really want to make contact with meat?”

“I agree one hundred percent. What’s there to say? ‘Hello, meat. How’s it going?’ But will this work? How many planets are we dealing with here?”

“Just one. They can travel to other planets in special meat containers, but they can’t live on them. And being meat, they can only travel through C space. Which limits them to the speed of light and makes the possibility of their ever making contact pretty slim. Infinitesimal, in fact.”

“So we just pretend there’s no one home in the Universe.”

    “That’s it.”

“Cruel. But you said it yourself, who wants to meet meat? And the ones who have been aboard our vessels, the ones you probed? You’re sure they won’t remember?”

“They’ll be considered crackpots if they do. We went into their heads and smoothed out their meat so that we’re just a dream to them.”

“A dream to meat! How strangely appropriate, that we should be meat’s dream.”

“And we marked the entire sector unoccupied.”

“Good. Agreed, officially and unofficially. Case closed. Any others? Anyone interesting on that side of the galaxy?”

“Yes, a rather shy but sweet hydrogen core cluster intelligence in a class nine star in G445 zone. Was in contact two galactic rotations ago, wants to be friendly again.”

    “They always come around.”

“And why not? Imagine how unbearably, how unutterably cold the Universe would be if one were all alone …”

    • Love me some Bisson. You’ve seen the (best) video, I assume?

      • SmotPoker

Put it up. I’m sure the others will enjoy it. Thanks for the correction on the spelling of the name. I realized once I seen your correct version I had used the wrong spelling.

Here’s a link to another favorite of mine by Terry Bisson. It’s called RSVP To The FBI. Short, and to the point.

        http://www.terrybisson.com/page14/files/terry-bisson-poem.pdf

    • MsPythia

He wrote that story with his meat brain. I loved it! 🙂

      • SmotPoker

Turns out we both have the same favorite. Those others I posted are worthy in their own right, but this one was so well done.

      • towerofbabel

        This is awesome.

  • SmotPoker

UnkaWilbur mention the video for They’re Made Out Of Meat by Terry Bisson. There are a few versions of it on the interwebz. I have my favorite, but I’ll post some, and you can decide for yourselves.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tScAyNaRdQ
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-9t9BIBLKw
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0yRsQK9vG0
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JdAVBFUDTE

    • The first one is, really, the best one. Captures the humor and pointed commentary of the Bisson text, perfectly. IMHO.

      • SmotPoker

        Agreed.

    ROFL….

Ran across this, and laughed. Wishful thinking on the part of the artist.

If only. The ego monster loves himself far too much to pull such a stunt.

    • SpiffyTheValiant

      o.o Whoa Smotty…

Besides, as much as I hate the man, unless Jill pulls a miracle, he’s the only one who can deny hillary a victory.

      • SmotPoker

Sad as it sounds, I’ll take Hillary over Trump all day, every day. We can push her ass out in 4 years with the country still relatively intact. I’m not sure we can say the same about Herr Trumplethinskin.

        • SpiffyTheValiant

I’d take Trump over Hillary. He’ll have handlers. Congress will block most of his crazy. Hillary will actually get shit done, none of it good.

          • SmotPoker

I’m not willing to bet on that. I can’t give my vote to a madman such a Trump. The crazies in Congress want a lot of the shit he wants so I won’t depend on them to stop him. We got SCOTUS judges coming up, just too much at stake to risk it with such a monster. Trust me, Hillary isn’t my first choice or even my 10th choice for POTUS, but as you said, outside of Jill Stein pulling off a miracle, these are the horses we have in the race.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            Agree to disagree.

It’s like choosing between the Joker and Two Faced from Batman.

          • SmotPoker

Not much else we can do. It’s great to at least have the option to disagree without fear of being banned for you view.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0BuPgrBwHU

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            lol so true.

          • You want me to listen to Southpark? There’s a reason that the phrase “South Park Republican” exists, you know.

More like Turd Sandwich and Crap Flakes. Either way you’re choosing to shove shit in your mouth. I’ll take the healthier alternative because crap or turd, I’d be voting for a shit-fest either way and covering myself in any amount of shit is still covering myself in shit.

          • SmotPoker

It’s funny, judging by all the replies here, and considering I hate Clinton with the fire of a thousand suns that it still appears that I’m underachieving in my distaste for her.

          • I think it’s more like you’re over-reaching in your fear of Trump. And that’s a reaction that is exactly what The Powers That Be want. And, me personally, if TPTB want me to think something, I’m very suspicious.

          • Edwin

If the left they refer to is Joan Walsh, Karoli and Amanda Marcotte types then I agree with them.

          • Trump is not the madman DNC/Media propaganda makes him out to be, and he’s got no political power, nothing he might want will get enacted, unless it’s already the desire of those controlling congress, that is, the exact same policies that will be the core of those Clinton gets enacted.

The difference is, that Clinton has a much wider, more destructive agenda than Trump’s simple ego-driven desire to win, if that’s even what he wants.

          • towerofbabel

“Clinton has a much wider, more destructive agenda than Trump’s simple ego-driven desire to win” Precisely.

          • kreskin

With Clinton we know what will happen , knowing that I’ll take my chances with the loose cannon . By the way , I don’t think he’s the nut he pretends to be , he’s purposely sabotaging his own campaign .

          • kreskin

Exactly . She’ll get things done alright , it will be at our expense.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            yup

          • towerofbabel

Trump doesn’t want to govern. The GOP will run the show from behind the curtains. He is a goof and will not be allowed to make decisions or set policy. The corporate minders will make sure of that. But I will not vote for either of the GOPDNC candidates. It just seems like giving in to tyranny. And I mean that literally.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            indeed

        • 17

How can you say we’ll push her out? We can’t even keep her out now, BEFORE she gets in!

          • SmotPoker

            I didn’t say it would be easy….

Remember, I can’t stand the woman either.

Smoty, you voting for Stein in the General?

    We knew it was coming!

“Harvard Professor Creates Blueprint for Ending Cash in US; Calls for Immediate Phasing Out of $20 Bills”

There is little debate among law-enforcement agencies that paper currency, especially large notes such as the U.S. $100 bill, facilitates crime: racketeering, extortion, money laundering, drug and human trafficking, the corruption of public officials, not to mention terrorism….

Cash is also deeply implicated in tax evasion, which costs the federal government some $500 billion a year in revenue…

Cash also lies at the core of the illegal immigration problem in the U.S. If American employers couldn’t so easily pay illegal workers off the books in cash, the lure of jobs would abate, and the flow of illegal immigrants would shrink drastically.

    • Governments would just have the banks make them some “clean” credit chips.

So since we have a SciFi thread going… has anyone ever seen Fantastic Planet? Was sitting around one nite years ago eating mushrooms with friends and we found this on a PBS channel. I was mesmerized by it’s weirdness and have thought about it from time to time, but have never revisited it for a serious watch.

    • Knew about it long before I got to see it, in the local art-house theater, in the 80s. Great flick.

Hmmm… Slow day! I’m working for 4 hours and there was only 41 posts in the mean time!

    You guys are slacking! 🙂

Well, let me share with you what I’ve been working on. …It’s a 1958 Karmann Ghia Cabriolet. When it’s done, it’ll be done to the same quality standard as I applied to this Karmann Ghia when I restored it:

    http://ghiacoachworks.com/share/cars/58_KG_coupe/58_completed_2.jpg

    More on that car here:

    http://ghiacoachworks.com/share/cars/58_KG_coupe/58_KG_coupe.html

But THIS one is a Cabriolet – Cabriolets are European tops similar to an American “convertible” but with a better top than any American counterpart – for one thing, the top has full insulation and padding and an interior headliner. They typically do not leak or whistle…

Anyway, I’m building a web page for this Cabriolet too, but I’m only just getting started on the web page. I’ve got it divided out by category. Recently I’ve been working on the brakes, so I did a page just for that. It’s still under construction but you can see it so far…

      Good now. Tks.

    • I’ve got a swollen eye-lid, for some reason. And nothing I can possibly do about it, without incurring bills I don’t need. So, I’m taking it very easy today.

      • RTIII

Awe! Sorry to hear that – any particular reason for it – Bee-sting?! Infection?

Some Napthcon-A might help it feel better if you have any on hand.

        • No reason that I know of. Maybe conjuctiva related (I have cats that do not respect my personal space), but it only seems to be affecting the lid. Painful to the touch, but doesn’t seem to be getting significantly worse.

Mostly uncomfortable and annoying. Not effecting the eye itself, I’m not ready to go to an emergency room.

No, I have not. I’ll have to look into it. The one I linked is supposed to take place during the Captain Archer era of Star Trek. The soft focus they are using is kind of distracting, but other than that it’s pretty well done.

        • Yep, seen it. It’ pretty well done. I wasn’t too impressed with the actors and “enterprise” is definitely my least favorite of the TV series (and eras), but it I enjoyed it, nonetheless.

Now, “Continues…” Well, I’m as crazy for that as I was for the original series.

          • SmotPoker

OK, I watched the first episode of “Continues”, and you are correct in your assessment that it certainly had the look, and feel of the original. Hell, give me a minute, and I may like this Kirk better than the original. He out Shatner’s Shatner if you know what I mean. It’s almost like he went to the William Shatner School of Acting Like Captain Kirk.

Got just a little bit into the 2nd episode when glitches with my box started up, and I set the viewing aside for another time. Pretty well done for a “tribute”. If you are a fan of the original series, this is right up your alley. Good call.

          • Yeah, when watching, I just tend to forget I’m not watching the original cast and crew, despite the obvious differences. Which is impressive, as TOS is important to me.

It’s not a perfect show, nor a perfect re-creation, but it’s close enough to be eerie.

          • And, it’s a joy to watch Chris Doohan revel in his father’s role.

“Israeli Arms Dealer Selling Advanced Spying Tech To World’s Repressive Regimes”

An Israeli company that is a world leader in cyber warfare was found to help governments hack the iPhones of activists and journalists, including the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and likely Turkey, Israel, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Hungary and others.

Citizen Lab and Lookout found that the company, NSO Group, has exploited Apple vulnerabilities to disguise itself as Gmail, Facebook, WhatsApp, Skype, the Red Cross, CNN, Al Jazeera and the Pokemon Company to create malicious links.

Once a target clicks on the link, the company can read messages, record sounds, track locations and collect passwords.

There’s an update just put out to patch this.

    • Wait! I thought Apple was immune to all that virus and bug stuff? At least, that’s what Apple and all their fans have been saying for decades now!

I guess, for government-based hacks and exploits, Apple “Just Works.”

      /Snark Off

      • cathyx

I can honestly tell you, as a mac user, i have never had a virus problem. And i don’t have any outside virus protection.

        • You likely just didn’t know it. I know at least two people who make their living off using Apple devices as DDOS zombies, because they’ve always got dozens of open exploits and Apple owners never realize they’ve been compromised. Apple machines are full of holes, it’s just that Apple owners have been “Complianced” into thinking otherwise.

I’m an IT professional with 30+ years experience including admining multiple site with 100+ Apple machines. I know of what I speak: Yes, they get viruses all the time. Yes, they break as often as PCs. It’s just Apple owners willingly stay in the dark about it. It’s part of Apple’s very psychology-driven marketing to encourage Apple owners to think otherwise.

          • cathyx

Then all i can say is, ignorance is bliss. I know most here are anti-apple, but i”m a very satisfied owner.
I spilled wine on my laptop about a year into owning this laptop, (I know, hard to believe I could do such a thing) and it kept working, much to my computer guy’s surprise. Now it’s 6 years old, still going.

          • cathyx

Oh, and if i have gotten viruses, they never appeared in any way that hindered my use of the computer. But when I had a pc, it was constant, even with virus protection.

          • Again, as an IT professional for 30 years, I can confirm, with data, not anecdotes, that that’s not a factually correct statement: Windows PCs do not get infected by viruses at a higher rate than Apple PCs: There’s just vastly more Windows PCs.

It’s been well documented that the perception of current Apple owners, who previously owned Windows boxes, that their PCs got vastly more viruses is just the Observer-Expectancy Effect.

          • cathyx

Well, MY observations hold that i have never had my computer operations shut down with my mac, but my PC had them often, 2-3 times a year on average. No, i am not a computer savvy person, just someone who wants to be able to log on and surf the internet. But I know there is no convincing a pc fan of anything good about an apple product.

          • “PC Fan” Name-calling now? OK, we’re done.

            Two notes:
YOU own a PC. Your PC running Apple’s Operating System uses the same commodity hardware as any PC running Microsoft’s OS, or, the Linux OS, which is the main Operating System I run (along with installs of Windows and the Apple OS, on virtual machine instances). It’s the same system, made by the same hardware manufacturers, as those evil, mean computers running windows, that you call “PCs”

I am an IT pro, with 30 years experience, my preferences, or lack thereof are made based on vast experience with all kinds of hardware from embedded systems, to mainframes, not on the personal, anecdotal evidence of owning a few home computers.

          • cathyx

I didn’t mean to hit a sore spot with you, I was just kidding calling you that. I’m not questioning your credentials, just giving you my observations. Sheesh.

          • You didn’t “hit a sore spot,” I am long past such silly partisan games, to justify some bias I hold. You were being deliberately rude, calling names, trying to hurt, and you know it, and I’m just calling you out for it. Now I am truly done with this conversation.

          • smkngman3

“You were being deliberately rude, calling names, trying to hurt, and you know it, and I’ll have none of that.”

I hope you’r not serious with this comment.

          • “But I know there is no convincing a pc fan of anything good about an apple product.”

How do you assess that statement? It seems to me that if Cathy is using terms that, if I had used them on her, would be deemed derogatory, it’s time to end the conversation. And I’ve certainly been seen enough Apple owners say :”Apple Fan” is being derogatory, when used in such a conversation.

Look, I’m not angry, nor am I holding a grudge, or any nonsense like that, it’s simply clear the conversation is over.

          • cathyx

I am 100% an apple fan, why would anyone consider that derogatory? I was in no way intending to insult you, lesson learned.

          • Your fellow Apple owners, over decades have made it clear that’s not an acceptable term.

          • Nancy

you used that term in your comment and then changed it to “owners”
I think she was just going off that.
Edit:not “owner” was changed to “and all their customers”

          • I changed it several times, I edit my comments all the time, when I realize I’ve used improper or inaccurate language.

          • Nancy

of course! I guess she should have used one as well, and seeing your use of it, maybe thought it was ok to say “PC fan” as well.

          • Note the lack of a /snark tag, in her reply, and she used it after repeatedly trying to convince me something was true that I know, empirically, isn’t. Big Diff.

          • Nancy

well as I was reading it I had no idea where the snark was supposed to be-that we are fans? we don’t believe that they get viruses? that we remain willfully ignorant and loyal to Apple?
there is a lot of jabs at people that like their Apple products there. the snark tag is supposed to cover all that? I have never had a problem with being called a fan of something and sure didn’t take offence when I saw you post that. apparently you know differently when you say that Apple owners are offended.
anyway…I saw that and thought that might be why she thought it was ok to post what she did and just wanted to add my thoughts.

          • cathyx

            Thank you Nancy.

          • Nancy

            no problem.

          • “We.” Not going to rehash the pointless.

          • Nancy

            lol, of course.

          • 17

            ..

          • Shohanna

I use BOTH, and I like that viruses aren’t as “popular” for Apple then they are for PC. The only reason that apple doesn’t get as many is because there isn’t a high pay off as there is for PC.

More people have PC’s = More viruses. Means more Money!

Apple has and always WILL get viruses just as much as PC’s. The thing is not many people FALL for it b/c most people who USE apple aren’t dumb. It’s divided by the “stupidity” factor.

          • It’s not hard to believe.

Modern laptops, and by modern, I mean in the last decade or more, are made to be quite resistant to such things. And Apple’s laptops are made by the same company as Dell, Sony and several other brands.

I’ve had several laptops, with better specs and lower prices than Apple’s outdated hardware, that have been spilled on or, in one case, fully immersed, in liquid and worked fine. This is what I mean by “psychology-driven” Apple has convinced you a common feature of modern computers is a special feature; It’s a running theme with them.

But, I won’t try to convince you, people will never be convinced, see this comment (and your replies), from yesterday’s thread.

He’s not that hot. He does have stuff going on though. (I like hairy chests.)

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            lol

          • Edwin

I hate this Hollywood waxed body hair BS. Another reason to love the 70s was hairy chests were the hot thing. I miss the 70s. 🙁

          • cathyx

Hairless chests definitely are all the rage now. I prefer a bit of hair on a man’s chest myself, they don’t look like a teenager then, and a teenager is definitely not sexy to me.

          • Edwin

I’ve noticed a trend that hair seems to be slowly creeping back into vogue, but not fast enough for me. I’ll be dead before it’s hot again.

Not a fan of the hairless trend. If it is too much you can always trim. Put the wax down!!!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            *pat pat*

Spiffy has no real strong preference either way.

            Hahah Great dream sounds like!

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            yay 🙂

      • Wait, who, what? You’re not talking about those JJ Trek/Fast & Furious movies, are you?

        • Shohanna

No, Chekoff died. remember? Just this passed summer, his car rolled into him at the end of the drive way. Can’t remember is real name though.

    • Shohanna

That reminds me. I ordered a box set of the Original movie series. I waited and waited to get it. And eventually they canceled it. So, I still have all of them on VHS, but I can’t watch them. I need to find another way to get the movies on DVD or Blue Ray. **sigh** I am so mad! I waited, thinking I would get them for 5 MONTHS. 🙁

  • How you can tell I’ve played too much of the Fallout series of games, in my life: I just saw a bobby pin on the sidewalk outside, and was immediately siezed by the urge to pick it up. LOL

    • Shohanna

Is that like “loot” in the game? My ex-husband played Fallout. I would watch now and then over his shoulder. I wasn’t really interested in the dystopian game. I sometimes come across certain things and want to pick it up too. **blush**

      • Bobby pins are used when trying to pick locks, to get into buildings, open boxes, etc.

        • Shohanna

Ah, oki so it’s a tool. haha

  • Shohanna

Evening bunnies! So, I had a conversation with my daughter yesterday. She had to go to the hospital the day before because of colitis and was all hyped up on her pain meds and antibiotics. She doesn’t remember the conversation we had at all. LOL I am all but forgotten in the current affairs. She is alright. But I have to get a new urologist. He isn’t listening to me at all. As if peeing 7 times or more a day is “normal”. He prescribed me another heart pill that is a diuretic. My GP says oh hell no, You need to call him on Monday and tell them that’s not appropriate and to find something else. LOL

It’s like she was very upset and was like is he listening at all?! **I love my GP** Then I find out that the GP is leaving the practice and I am like..WHAAA NO!!!! **sigh** So I have to get 2 new doctors now. 🙁 WTF people.

    • Edwin

I’m sure I pee at least 7 times and day and probably more. I feel normal.

      • Shohanna

But are you dehydrated while you are doing that peeing?

        • Edwin

I’m not dehydrated. Are you dehydrated?

          • Shohanna

Severely. I have symptoms of dehydration. That is not slacked by the 120oz of water I drink a day.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

120 oz @.@ yeah that would explain the 7 times a day. surprised it’s not more.

          • Shohanna

Sometimes it is, and he thinks it’s “oki”. My GP agreed with me, it’s time for a new urologist who isn’t stuck in a fucking book.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            oh

          • Shohanna

I could tell him my bladder blew and he wouldn’t hear. It’s down right annoying. He spends more time on his phone then he does talking to me when we are in an appt.

          • SpiffyTheValiant

            eep

          • Well, he’s got investments to manage, ya know!! 🙁

  • “We would have to abolish the insurance companies, there is no way around that” BOOM! Right On!

‘We need fundamental changes’: US doctors call for universal healthcare

A group of more than 2,000 physicians is calling for the establishment of a universal government-run health system in the US, in a paper in the American Journal of Public Health.

According to the proposal released Thursday, the Affordable Care Act did not go far enough in removing barriers to healthcare access. The physicians’ bold plan calls for implementing a single-payer system similar to Canada’s, called the National Health Program, that would guarantee all residents healthcare.

    • Shohanna

Aww **BEGS** Please we need something! Some of us don’t even get the courtesy of being a human in this healthcare system!

    • I had it happen earlier, but only once. More Disqus server issues, no doubt. But, being a developer myself, and having some idea of how many concurrent discussion threads Disqus operates, I tend to give them a break. I’m not sure my code, at its best could perform so well.

(My Ego says, “Fuck yes it would!” but I try to to let my ego control my brain. 😉 )

    • SpiffyTheValiant

seems okay to me so far. I think the awesome hairflip kinda overloaded disquis. Tone down the sexy by at least 69% 😉

        • SpiffyTheValiant

‘Good News,’ Says Sanders, as McConnell Signals No Lame-Duck Vote on TPP
    http://www.commondreams.org/news/2016/08/26/good-news-says-sanders-mcconnell-signals-no-lame-duck-vote-tpp

Is this true or some kind of GOPDNC Party hoofwankery? I suggest we proceed with the hoofwankery theory.

    • Well, McConnell used Clinton’s “serious flaws” excuse, so we can, in all likelyhood, expect to see it whizzed through congress after the election season is over.

Julian Assange gets a kitten for company in Ecuador’s London embassy

    • cathyx

Am i alone in thinking that this man is sexy because of everything he’s done and the kitten thing makes it more so?

      • Nancy

nope-I have had a massive crush on him from when I first heard of him…it’s only gotten bigger as the time has gone on and the kitten is the finishing touch.

        • Edwin

I won’t make any crude jokes about him with his new pussy cat.

          • Nancy

I’d be really happy to meow for him.

          • Edwin

Oh, my! Guess I’ve been chucked overboard for a newer sexier model. 🙁

            Have you told tracey marie?

          • Nancy

hey, I am finally shopping at the right counter for a change…
back in the day I was known as a “f*g hag” because I kept falling for gay men.
(no disrespect intended-that was the term of the day. not sure what they call women like that now?)

          • Edwin

I know exactly the plight of which you speak (with all the proper terminology)

          • Nancy

I bet you had lots of women hitting on you too.

          • Edwin

I can’t really answer that without bragging. 😀

            I knew it!

            would this apply?

          • Edwin

No. No. No. That I’m not. Looking back, now, I certainly wish I had been. 🙁

          • Nancy

ahhh…gives new meaning to “misspent youth”

          • Edwin

Yup. Now racing headlong toward my second childhood I see very clearly all the wasted opportunities of my of my younger days. Tragic!

          • Nancy

          • Edwin

Not sure what’s up with OV and the loyalty. The other two are either plotting a big revenge or they are drowning in booze, or something. That was quite a public meltdown.

Hipster punk wannabes. There isn’t a lot of information about this group because “conservative punk” is lame as shit, like Christian rap. They’d have more followers had they just went ahead and gone full white nationalist like all the other “conservative punks”, who at least have an outside-the-mainstream ideology, however shitty it is. These idiots are “PC” establishment punks, which is an oxymoron. It doesn’t get any less rebellious than going to the voting booth to support Bush like your boss and grandpa and every cop you know.

“El Salvador Frees 3 Ex-Military Linked to Dictatorship Crimes”

The crime was comitted during the country’s civil war between 1979-1992 and was documented in the novel “November” by writer Jorge Galan, who last year denounced threats against him over the publication of his book.

At least 70,000 Salvadorans were killed during the war, according to a post-conflict Trith Commission, with a majority of treh deaths attributed to the U.S.-Backed, right-wing security forces and death squads.

          • RTIII

            Three: OK, NV, and SD.

          • notisaidthepig

I’m hopeful she will get on the ballot here in NV. Am I being naive?

          • RTIII

It’s in litigation; doubtful, BUT possible.

Looks like SD is the only one that’s not possible… That would make 49, and given their electoral votes, not really an issue.

          • cathyx

I thought OK was impossible too, but according to that link it’s under litigation.

          • notisaidthepig

Shocking Video Shows Cops Kick In Door, Assault, & Pepper Spray Innocent 84yo Grandma

Last week, an innocent 84-year-old grandma was attacked by police, pepper sprayed, arrested, and hospitalized after officers chased her son during a traffic stop. On Friday, the graphic body camera video of that attack was released showing the horrid and outright insane response to her son rolling a stop sign.
Police were after the victim’s son, who they say refused to stop and ran into her home instead. When officers showed up, according to Smith and the body camera video, they kicked in her door and as she got up to see who was there — she was met with a face full of chemical agent.
“Turn around or I’ll spray you!” screams the cop just before dousing this innocent elderly woman in the face with the painful spray. Smith then falls to the ground in agony.

“Jill Stein fires back at Liz Warren”

“Politicians are not ‘entitled’ to our votes simply because they represent the establishment political parties,” she said in an email to the Herald.

“With a majority of Americans rejecting (Hillary) Clinton and Trump with record high levels of dislike and distrust, neither of them has earned our votes. I say: Don’t waste your vote on politics as usual that’s throwing us under the bus. Invest your vote in a movement for real change,” Stein said in a statement.

After a speech Thursday at Roxbury Community College, Warren said a vote for Stein — instead of Democratic presidential nominee Clinton — effectively would be one for Trump, whom she called a “racist bully.”

‘Why Couldn’t Wildin Graduate?’: The Legacy of a U.S. Immigration Program Targeting Teens”

On January 28, when Wildin David Guillen Acosta left his car to run into his home and grab his backpack before heading to school, he had no way of knowing he was a moment away from being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

He would spend the next six months in detention constantly at risk of being deported to his native Honduras, where he feared being murdered by local gangs. His detainment also robbed him of his graduation: At the time ICE took Acosta into custody, the 19-year-old was months away from completing high school.

Acosta, along with five other North Carolina youth—Josue Alexander Soriano Cortez, Yefri Sorto-Hernandez, Santos Geovany Padilla-Guzman, Bilmer Araeli Pujoy-Juarez, and Pedro Arturo Salmeron—have become known as the NC6. ICE took the teens on their way to school as part of Operation Border Guardian, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS)-led immigration enforcement policy targeting Central American migrants over the age of 18 who came to the United States as unaccompanied children after January 2014.

“Brooklyn Supreme Court judge suing borough’s Democratic Party for dashing her re-election hopes”

The suit claims Jacobson, who has 25 years of experience on the bench and is seeking re-election for a 14-year term, is being punished for rulings against lawyers affiliated with the Brooklyn Dems.

It also alleges that the screening board has been stacked by Frank Seddio, the chairman of the Kings County Democratic County Committee, even though it is meant to be independent.

“EXCLUSIVE: Collecting from corrupt city pols who avoid repaying money stolen from taxpayers not so simple”

Often they do this while collecting hefty city and state pensions.

Take ex-Assemblyman Brian McLaughlin, D-Queens, who’s been collecting $1,211 monthly pension checks since he pleaded guilty in 2008 to stealing everything in sight.

The courts approved a money judgment of $3 million against him but as of today, a huge chunk of the payments didn’t come out of his pocket.

Instead, in 2011 — three years after he pleaded guilty to stealing from unions, electric companies and even a Queens Little League team — he used leftover campaign contributions to pay off $845,000 in restitution.

An Iranian refugee held at an Australian-funded detention center in Papua New Guinea has won a political cartooning award for his work depicting life inside the camp.

NASA’s daring Juno spacecraft must fly into the heart of Jupiter’s deadly radiation belts to complete its mission. So far, so good. On Saturday morning, the spacecraft made its first close approach to Jupiter, flying to within 4,200km of the giant of the Solar System. That is less than the distance from New York to Los Angeles.

The spacecraft shot past Jupiter at the speed of 208,000km/hr relative to the planet, and mission managers pronounced that Juno was in good health. “Early post-flyby telemetry indicates that everything worked as planned and Juno is firing on all cylinders,” said Rick Nybakken, Juno project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Saturday’s flyby, at 9:44am ET, marked the first time Juno had activated its entire complement of nine scientific instruments and turned them toward Jupiter.

    Almost Mikey, almost….

    VIRGINIA (The Borowitz Report)—Calling
it a “scary moment” and a “close call,” Donald Trump’s campaign
officials confirmed that they had recaptured Mike Pence after the
Indiana governor attempted to flee the campaign bus in the early hours
    of Friday morning.

According to the campaign, Pence had asked to stop at a McDonald’s in rural
Virginia so that he could use the bathroom, but aides grew concerned
when the governor failed to reappear after twenty minutes.

After determining that Pence had given them the slip, Trump staffers fanned
out across the Virginia backcountry, where the governor was believed to
    have fled.

News that Pence had vanished touched off a panic in Indiana, where residents
feared that he might return to resume his political career.

After forty-five minutes of searching, however, campaign officials located a
bedraggled and dazed Pence walking along Virginia State Route 287, where
the Republican Vice-Presidential nominee was attempting unsuccessfully
    to hitch a ride.

A confrontation that Trump aides characterized as “tense” ensued, after which a sobbing Pence returned to the bus.

In the aftermath of Pence’s disappearance, Hope Hicks, Trump’s press
secretary, attempted to downplay the severity of the incident. “This is
the kind of thing that happens in the course of a long and demanding
campaign,” she said. “Having said that, we’re grateful to have Mike
Pence back with us, and we won’t let him get away again.”

Reportedly, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie offered to fill in for Pence in the
event that he became unable to fulfill his duties. That offer was
    declined.

Politics, and the MSM become such a farce. The RWNJ’s have spent decades being RWNJ’s, and the result is they no longer have any credibility with the general thinking public. It’s The Boy That Cried Wolf all over again. They can scream, jump, and shout about Hillary all day long to no avail, the public for the most part has learned to tune the fascist, authoritarians out.

We’ve heard these songs for decades, and they’ve achieved Stairway To Heaven status, we’re tired of it. It’s the song we change the station on when we hear it. They’ve cried wolf for so long that nobody is buying that there is indeed a wolf at the door.

    Priceless. Simply priceless.

    • notisaidthepig

      Yep.

    • MsPythia

The sad thing is that the Democrats don’t have any credibility either now after this rigged primary and Hillary demanding that everyone endorse her sorry ass and the so-called “progressives” going along with that and smearing Bernie the progressive candidate.

      • notisaidthepig

I honestly think this may be the best thing that’s ever happened. The curtain was pulled back and the Dems were revealed to be as mendacious as the Repubs. More mendacious perhaps because they were pretending otherwise.

And here’s the thing. In their zeal to smear Bernie and his supporters, they overreached. Their corruption was revealed, not just to those of us who follow politics, but to everyone. Everyone.

And the hits just keep on coming. This isn’t something the American public will soon forget. The erosion of the Democratic Party has begun and the corruption at the core of its foundation is crumbling. It’s only a matter of time before it falls.

        • MsPythia

      Nails what?

        refresh

        • MsPythia

Yup. I’m sorry we have to refresh so much. It didn’t used to be that way — I think Disqus must have changed something…?

          • notisaidthepig

It is what it is. There are more important things to complain about, methinks. I can live with refreshing.

Now the democrats hate Wikileaks and the truth-unreal

      • cathyx

Stolen from a comment at Truthdig:

this is like viewing life in a mirror where every image is the opposite of what it should be. even more disorienting our mirror seems located in some grotesque carnival fun house that exaggerates and distorts everything out of proportion. pacifists are seen as a threat while drone operators are called upon to keep peace on earth. first of all i have trouble even comprehending why the sheriff’s department was called onto an air force base in the first place. after all, isn’t the base funded by tax payer dollars? under what contorted logic, then, can citizens be accused of trespassing on our own property?

          Welcome to 1984

          • cathyx

The worst part for me is all the so called democratic voters who are completely turning a blind eye to everything the party is doing. That’s the most surprising and depressing thing.

          • The_Fixer

Not really surprising. “It’s OK when we do it, because we’re doing it for the right reasons.”

Which is exactly what their opponents are saying when they do it.

          • s k

Yup, the Democratic corruption is good corruption.

          • cathyx

But it IS surprising. Democrats used to be against corporate take over, against money in politics, against pro-1% values. And the supporters are blue collar and minorities.

          • towerofbabel

They are but only rhetorically. With Citizens United all of those principles fell away as the Dems looked for the easiest ways sell a service and raise money.

          • towerofbabel

It really is. I keep thinking, who are these people? But then I realize that most of them haven’t woken up. Or, if they did, they try to go back to sleep as quickly as possible to avoid the truth. I see this all around me and it shows how different the waking reality is from the sleep walking. Being awake requires action–now.

Obama and Hillary have hated whistleblowers of all kinds.

      Amen to that Jimmy.

      • notisaidthepig

I just love the final seconds of this clip. I love when Jimmy raises his voice in disgust and calls it like it is. Bravo!

    • Edwin

I’m betting youtube/google rolls back the view count on Jimmy. He’s so popular and you can tell by the comments people love him, but that # is always so low!
