Happily Dancin’ in me Bones

Happily Dancin' in me BonesBack in my early Navy days, a good friend turned me on to Supertramp. I’ve never thanked him enough for that.
Although we haven’t kept in touch, I still remember the first Supertramp album I heard, and find it appropriate nearly every day, especially these days.

Enjoy!

Yay! A new music thread. I might be back later. Meanwhile, I’ll leave this song for 17.

Only thing missing there is the skeletons dancing in the background! 😉

      • FaunaAndFlora

        I thought you’d approve.

    • Really, thanks to Doctor Demento, I love way to omuch from the 20s and 30s, for someone my age. 🙂

  • Except the Russians, and the Chinese…

    https://youtu.be/w_UnBAQknLQ

  • I posted some Ukulele Ike below, whose real name is Cliff Edwards, who you probably know from a slightly different context:

    https://youtu.be/aafpos35u-s

  • 17
  • Really, when it comes to Jazz and Swing, my love goes right through those eras…

    https://youtu.be/My0qD49tM-Q

  • If you’re not a fan of XTC, you’ve probably missed out on their 60 psychedelic-pop alter egos, The Dukes of Stratosphear. Do yourself a solid, and correct that, right now!

    https://youtu.be/X-fL68DbcQ0

  • If you’re up for something with a little more… fucking power How about the world’s second best band (according to The Meatmen), The Dwarves

    https://youtu.be/G2FIY_7WsUw

  • Not bad enough? How about a little of The Meatmen. STOMP!

    https://youtu.be/4q1F_Wh7gEc

    • FaunaAndFlora

Oh, I could tell you some stories about The Meatmen. My sweetie from back then was (and still is) Tesco’s brother-in-law. I even made all the food for Tesco’s wedding.

      • Faboo! I saw them live only once, back in the day. At Mdme Wong’s, IIRC. They were out of fucking control. I loved it.

  • 17
  • Whew. After that, I think it’s time for a little bit-core. Here’s “mmfan2315” with “Modern Control” From their CD “DOT MATRIX WITH POP MUSIC” made entirely on a Nintendo Gameboy…

    https://youtu.be/aE_tntTxUK4

  • I remembering numerous very liberal friends tut-tuting this song as extremist and “painting an unfair picture of the police.” Having lived mighty close to Compton, and visiting friends there often, in the early 80s, I had to respectfully disagree (though respect wasn’t what my disagreement got.) Now, of course, even upper-middle class liberals know the truth, even if some still want to avoid it, some of us have felt it for years, white or not!

    https://youtu.be/9jOqOlETcRU

  • Just a reminder that there was a time that Peter Gabriel burned with an intellectual and musical talent, and vision, that is barely conceivable in today’s commercial acts…

    • Marvin! The first R&B artist to give us a concept album (What’s going on?)

    • How can you not love Louis?

      • He is one of the Greats. Black and Blue is the only song (that I know of) that let you into his personal pain of being a black man.

      Wow. You’re on a roll.

      • MsPythia

Thanks! I was a college DJ once upon a time back in the 80’s. I used to mix lots of very unique popular music from different eras, with lots of 60’s garage rock, soul and R&B, some world music, and the latest in punk and new wave (at that time) — it was quirky, but I love that.

    • FaunaAndFlora

      This is fantastic!

      Nice. Love London.

      • MsPythia

The Kinks are one of my favorite bands. 😀

  • MsPythia

Remember Rose Marie from the Dick Van Dyke Show? This was her when she was a little girl — a tiny star at the end of the Vaudeville, and she was amazing!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i1weaWeOm8

    • Was always a big fan of Rose Marie’s, but never knew she had a musical career, until like 1998 or so.

      • MsPythia

Wasn’t she a little powerhouse as a kid? Makes me smile to listen to her singing songs that were so much more mature than her age actually fit. So talented. I never knew she was in vaudeville until recently.

    • I’d never seen this footage before tonight though!

  • Chunga

Ahh the hair, the clothes. Live Atlantic Rythem Section on the BBC.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNZ2el2wFXo

    • Such SoRo greatness.

      • Chunga

Was never a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but loved ARS.

        • Never a big blazing fan of Skynyrd, their radio cuts were fine by me, but never got into the deep cuts.

  • Chunga

And now for something completely different…. More live stuff on the BBC, The Edgar Winter Group playing Frankenstein.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZgHPjia4pI

    • Got to see him live in 1987. So awesome.

      • Chunga

One of the greats. I got to light his brother Johnny when his band played at my local theater back in the 00’s. Good Shit !!!

        • Johnny was definitely a hell of a musician, too. Got to see him a couple times, as he seemed to play our State Fair every year in the 80s.

      • FaunaAndFlora

Saw Edgar in 1972. Never got to see Johnny though.

    • SmotPoker

Love that song, and the whole They Only Come Out At Night album. A true masterpiece. Frankenstein was the first song I learned all the words to. Ah memories….

  • Chunga

Johnny Winter and band on the BBC’s Old Whistle Test. Full Set from 1979.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4BcI-o-R88

    • This is the last time I saw him live. The “Holy shit..” guy at the beginning is me. LOL.

      https://youtu.be/AGOar6WpOuI

      • Chunga

Haha that’s awesome. Damn, he could play right up to the end.

    • FaunaAndFlora

I’ve saved this for later. Thank you.

Have you seen this video? One of the best songs ever, and Mr. Winter put his heart and soul into it during this session.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRQzWTMtSIA#action=share

      • Chunga

I wish I could upvote you more than once for that one. Beautiful, just beautiful. Thanks.

        • FaunaAndFlora

          De nada, mi amigo.

I’m speaking Spanish because of the threat of taco trucks. 😉

          • Chunga

I love taco trucks. Every town should have at least two.

Japanese Eleki Music from the 1960’s

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKvJWRBBIOQ

    • FaunaAndFlora

Ooh… This is a real find. Never heard this band before. Japanese surf music. Too cool!

      • MsPythia

I love surf music old and new — my husband is a surf-rocker. 😀

    • Yeah! New too me too. This is boss, Betty!

      • I’m gonna have to listen to Yuzo in the front room, I definitely need to do The Swim, Funky Chicken, etc, to his stuff.

  • Chunga

Neil Young and the International Harvesters on Austin City Limits.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcHQYwJ2LY0

    • MsPythia

I adore Neil Young. He’s perennially cool.

      • Chunga

        He da Man !!

    • I love his music, but he’s a totally bamboozled idiot about digital music and his player and music for it are an over-priced nightmare only a hipster-poseur could love. LOL.

      • FaunaAndFlora

        I’m with you there.

      • Chunga

That is some weird stuff. I have a friend out in Cali that is really into it.

      • SmotPoker

Agreed, but Neil, and his compatriots will always hold a special place in my heart. I like this video simply because it has some rare photos that we aren’t used to seeing of the event. It sickens me every time I hear this song. Seeing those soldiers kneeling, and taking aim. WTF? Those were American kids you fucking assholes. You crossed the line from soldiers to murderers in the blink of an eye without a second thought in your empty fucking brainwashed heads. Good Nazi’s always follow orders no matter how evil the order.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkg-bzTHeAk

  • Speaking of “YouTube Videos I’m At/In”. Here’s Mojo doing “Tie My Pecker” in Tempe, circa 2000. No actual video of me, though you can hear me screaming and you can see my goofy buddy, Dirk, screaming his damn, fool head off, at about 02:07.

    https://youtu.be/OvsHZgLanhg

    • FaunaAndFlora

Doesn’t surprise me that you’d like ol’ Mojo. I love this one.

How about some Jello with that Mojo?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rcyAF4lz04

      • Love that whole album. When I took up Ukulele a few years ago, that was the first album’s worth of songs I worked on learning (then went to “God Bless” by Tiny Tim). 😀

So, yeah, “Love Me I’m a Liberal” sounds great on Uke. And I’ve been meaning to update the lyrics yet again, but haven’t got around to it.

        • FaunaAndFlora

          Cool!

  • And one last “I’m there, and it’s on YouTube.” Devo from one of any 6 shows they did that year, and the second smallest venue, Tucson’s Rialto Theater. Only 500 tickets sold. FUCKING AMAZING show.

    https://youtu.be/mjrxJBi46UE

    • MsPythia

      I ♥ Devo.

      • They are a core component of what passes for spirituality, in my life and were a core component of my establishment of a personal identity, unique from that of my family.

    • FaunaAndFlora

Looks like I got here just in time!

  • towerofbabel

My daughter was just playing this song on her guitar upstairs. Flashback! She sang it low too.

Crash Test Dummies; Conan O’Brian 1994 Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSUUnMGoY3U

    • I was too busy in exploring experimental/avante-garde/outsider music in the early 90s to pay too much attention to the commercial pop of the time, but I’ve come to have an appreciation Crash Test Dummies, over time.

  • MsPythia
  • Chunga

Since Devo reared their wonderful heads, here’s some complimentary Pera Ubu.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hYqvtHzr48

    • MsPythia

      <3!

    • Yeah, definitely another definitive sound of the late-70s early 80s revolution in rock & pop.

    • I discovered them in January, 1980, through “The Modern Dance” which my newly-minted Girlfriend had. We walked down Wilshire Blvd, to Westwood, listening to this on my Walkman, with a “cord-splitter” and headphones (headphones not earbuds.) so you can imagine how deeply that album is ingrained into my memories. LOL.

  • MsPythia

This is my talented husband’s band (he’s the lead guitarist, and writes most of the songs):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7pUD_C-q7o

  • Chunga

How ’bout some God Damn Grateful Dead. Full show live from the Beat Club in Bremen Germany during their Europe ’72 tour.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Uu57h7H18

    • Never could stand Deadheads (even those I was friends with, when they went all Deadhead on me), but that never stopped me from loving every piece of their recorded music I’ve come across. 🙂

      • Chunga

Hahahaha… “when they went all Deadhead on me”, now that’s funny and I can understand completely. I got into the Dead in college mainly because of their jams because I was so into jazz coming out of HS. It took a while for their full flavor to grow on me though. Do love their music.

  • towerofbabel

Thanks for this thread Unka. It’s nice to get out of Clintonville every so often to maintain sanity.
    Good Night All.

    • MsPythia

      Good Night Tower! <3

    • Thank 17, he’s The MAN. But I’ll say “You’re Welcome” for him, and wish you a good night!

A local group here, one of our favorites.

    • Fun-kay! I like it.

    • MsPythia

      Nice!

      Another Michigander!

I’m about a hundred miles north and west of Detroit but I know the Howling Diablos.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfr4U90nBj4

      • Shaykayvah

Johnny, the sax player is my neighbor, nice guy.

        • FaunaAndFlora

          Good sax player too.

      • MsPythia

I’m friends with these guys: The Volcanos from Detroit — very nice guys and very talented.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYlzwr90MUE&index=8&list=PLDPvLc5HFsA2TrnfTttWLpPrXuqUM0cDN

        • FaunaAndFlora

          Detroit surf music!

          • MsPythia

Yup! And they can stay at my house whenever they come to the SF bay area! 😀

          • FaunaAndFlora

I used to have bands stay at my house back in the 80’s when I was doing punk shows. Three of the SF bands from back then that always stayed with me were MDC, The Dicks and Toxic Reasons.

          • MsPythia

That’s what you have to do if you love music! Otherwise it’s too expensive to tour for most bands.

          • Yeah, sounds like my late 90s, early 2000s: I used to live in an old church, in Tempe and run an underground club. Here’s a little bit of video from one of the shows….

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7BQL_IJNZs

          • FaunaAndFlora

And it’s at The Goat! How cool is that?

(Goats rule. I have a nice herd of Toggenburg goats.)

          • The Church of the Black Goat
The Church of the Leather Midget
            Wondermeat Preschool

These were but some of the names of “The Goat”. 😀 We had goats there too: My neighbor had two that I would let come and eat my grass.

          • FaunaAndFlora

            Pan drools!

          • LOL: You can get a little look at my back and hair, as I walk from the side of the stage back towards the entrance…

          • FaunaAndFlora

I videotaped this show. The quality sucks because I was using public access equipment, but it’s still Minor Threat. You can see me at about 2:43, trying to get an asshole to move out from in front of the camera. That was right before I gave myself a buzzcut.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_39YxsPp6s

          • Fuck yeah!

          • FaunaAndFlora

            That’s what I thought you’d say!

          • SmotPoker

Growing up it was hard to resist those 15ft curls going down the Detroit River….

        • Shaykayvah

I’ll have to keep an eye (ear) out for them,

      • Shaykayvah
        • FaunaAndFlora

Always a good time for more Diablos. 🙂

      • SmotPoker

35 miles east of Lansing/75 or so north/west of Detroit checking in….

        • Shaykayvah

4 miles north of 8 Mile.

        • FaunaAndFlora

          Dang! We’re almost neighbors.

          • SmotPoker

I believe somewhere around $5 of gas would cover it round trip….

  • Well, while we’re on “Bands We Know” Here’s my good buddy Brendan’s latest band, thought I’ve known him through 3-4 other bands. I may put up some of his older stuff. Since I ran an early digital label and a strictly-unlicensed club, I’ve known a dozen or more bands. Maybe I’ll try to feature one each Friday. Anyway, “Enjoy!”

    https://youtu.be/4IGvHQNHYbU

    • FaunaAndFlora

      This is kind of fun.

  • MsPythia

One more crazy surf tune from the 1960’s and I’m out of here. This is Sandy Nelson (amazing drummer!), and the name of the song is Casbah.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiSs4hO43AU

  • FaunaAndFlora
    • Another band I saw too often not often enough, when I was fake-ID hopping in LA.

  • Chunga

I’m a big fan of Indian and Tibetan music and loved Shakti. The guys are so young looking damn. I saw Zakir years later touring with his family at the Mann Music Center in Philly. I have never been so high in my life and there were no drugs involved, just pure joy from the ecstasy of the music.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGW4nrsZJ3o

    • FaunaAndFlora

      This is beautiful. Thank you.

Here’s one that you might enjoy.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLjnHTHQBzk

      • Chunga

That is awesome!! It’s amazing the variety of stringed instruments played with a bow around the world. All the different sounds and intonations they produce and how they all seem to fit in with each other. I feel I should be watching a Sergio Leone movie lol.

        • FaunaAndFlora

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly is my third favorite movie, number one and number two being A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove.

          • Chunga

            Excellent choices !!!

          • FaunaAndFlora

Number four is The Blue Angel with Marlene Dietrich, both the English and the German version, with The Wizard Of Oz coming in at number five.

          • Chunga

I would have to do some serious thinking on my favorite movies. I would certainly echo your three choices. Blade Runner would have to be in there (and I cringe at the thought of the sequel coming out next year), All That Jazz, To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men …….

          • FaunaAndFlora

Blade Runner, To Kill A Mockingbird and Twelve Angry Men are certainly in my Top Forty. If I were to round out a Top Ten though, I’d probably have to add “Some Like It Hot”, “O Brother Where Art Thou”, “The Birds”, “A Perfect World” and “Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert”.

          • Chunga

Damn, forgot about Priscilla, what a great movie !!!

          • FaunaAndFlora

            🙂

          • One of my favorites Dr. Strangelove.

          • FaunaAndFlora

            It’s such a powerful film.

    • Excellent, thank you. Reminds me of Silk Road.
      http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jAic5B57J9Y

      • FaunaAndFlora

Reminded me of Silk Road too. There is so much beautiful music in this world right out there for anyone who would like to find it.

        • Chunga

Music is a wonderful thing. Imagine if we spoke no words but only communicated with music.

          • FaunaAndFlora

One reason why I hang out on music threads is so I can find a basis for friendship just in case we might find ourselves disagreeing on a political thread. Things seem to get nasty in a hurry when we don’t take the time to find common ground. And music is just about the best place to find that common ground too. Sports as well. Go Green!

        • Some poeple alway amazes me, when they get stuck in the familiar, to the exclusion of all else.

The look on their faces when listening to music that isn’t to their style, is akin to someone taking their first born :^) Poor dears.

  • Chunga

Ravi Shankar’s daughter Anoushka is every bit the musician as her father. I only have two of her albums but I love to put my earbuds in and lose myself in her music.

Since we’re veering off into more exotic music influences, thought I’d post this one by Ofra Haza.

Good evening, 17. I was just about ready to sign off, but I’ll stay a little while longer if you want to hang out.

Okay. i’ll hang for a while.

    • FaunaAndFlora

I knew Dan Fogelburg back when I was living in Nashville. He tried to court me for awhile. Struck me as a bit too needy, so I turned him down. He still did some good music.

    • Shaykayvah

Dan Fogelberg is one of my guilty pleasures, beautiful voice and an underrated guitarist/pianist.

  • Chunga

Ok, one more ‘exotic’ (😉 at FaunaAndFlora) artist that I have a bunch of on my iPod. Anouar Brahem playing the oud. Night all, thanks for all the great music !!!!!!!!!

      • I second that! After along hard week, it was relaxing and enjoyable :^)

Sweet dreams. It’s been a pleasure to share music with you.
